I liked the combat system and the dialog content

The issue I had was the music playing with the combat music several times, and the font which was strange, extremely stretched making it hard to read

I also managed to find an "out of bound" ie I escaped the map by spamming the strafe button while looking for secrets. Per chance I've managed to return in-game by doing the same. (see screenshot )

But it was fun exploring your game!

Developer(+1)

AH DAMMIT i thought i pactedh that, i forgot to add the outerbound return box.... but yea the music is more a recent discovery, i didnt set the randomiser high enough and it doesnt work...

Interesting combat system, though difficulty ramp up pretty quickly and you have way less time to react. Maybe adding two timers will improve diffuculty ramp up. If you pressed correct button during first timer you'll parry like it's done right now, and during second timer you'll only block incomming attack without parying. Will make surviving easier and will punish less for mistakes closer to the end of the game.

Developer

hmm, i i could fix the timer of the difficulty, it seems i got used to the combat while forgetting about others...

Input is extremely sensitive and combined with instant movement, I don't even know if I'm just turning left/right or completely did a 270 degrees turn. As others have mentioned, the text is really hard to read.

The combat is really enjoyable although there is quite a long wait before a prompt shows up.

Great job on your first jam.

Developer

yea text size is small, and turning is stupidly fast, pretty fixable

I managed to kill the boss, when you die to him he disappears and you have to restart, not a big deal if you're not as bad as I am at playing the game. I really like the sandbox approach, just get enough gold however you want in a quite open place then you can deal with the boss, that's super cool.

I'm very happy that you simply switched to instant movement, the game was much more fun to me that way. The combat system is fun and I thought the difficulty was pretty on point, I appreciate that.

I think the theme integration is weak but there are quite some story bits and texts here and I appreciate you're doing everything all by yourself up to the music.

Good job.

Developer

yea the theme integration was note about the lore on the notes and the flipside world.

And of course that's a bug right there, he is meant to respawn when you die... I shoulda just set every Kelli to respawn but you keep your stats that woulda been a much better idea.

Edit:

The itch.io app doesn’t install the latest version

For whatever reason, I cannot get this game to start. I press E and nothing happens. I’m on Windows 10. Any ideas why it might not be working?

  • The text is really blurry. If you’re not already using it, you should consider using Text Mesh Pro.
  • Input is a little too sensitive and I have to be really careful to tap the keys to make sure it is only pressed once.
  • A really interesting combat system! I really enjoyed it. I’d love to see it developed further.
  • Music loop was a bit off.
  • I adored the MS-Paint style art for the torches and skeletons. They unfortunately clashed with the wall / floor textures.
  • Sound effects were very satisfying. I thought they fit well and were timed properly.

I think there is some potential here. Do you plan to develop it further? I’d love to see the combat system expanded in a more feature rich game.

Nice job!

Developer

I do not know why it is no longer working, mayb you tried openingn it from the app? It should work still

Also thank you, this is really constructive criticism.

Developer

oh wait did u download the latest version? Not the dev builds as there older?

Developer

oh also, the gameplay mechanic I will keep...but WILL be remade in a new game, I coded it stupidly messy and it made me having to fight unity to work on input commands.

Nice combat system, graphics also look good. UI and controls could be better. Solid entry!

Pretty good experience all around, nice combat system, clear exploration, smooth movement in every direction, this is pretty good. I'd much rather see one cohesive artstyle with a varied tileset than some more HD Unity assets store, even if it's a bit crude.

I had some problem with combats however, sometimes skeletons would attack instantly without leaving me time to dodge, it didn't happened a lot but it was noteworthy enough to kill me once or twice.

Solid entry as far as I'm concerned. It doesn't looks or sounds excellent but your movements and explorations are one point.

Developer

Honestly the insta attack is prob cause they attack quicker then the character is allowed to attack, best theory i got

but ya glad you enjoyed it, I try to be as independent with art, models, music as possible, unless I "have" use third party sources, like sounds more UI or more complex models...

Liked the combat, that was the best part, congrats that you got your first game jam done! :)

One, don't apologize when you don't think yer game is up to par.

The only way of getting good at making games is by being bad at making games.

That said, this was not a bad game.

I liked the dance-dance-revolution combat thingie.

I killed 5 skellies.

A solid entry, especially for a first jam.

Fight was fun, game was overall okay. What's dragging it back is the UI and the controls. But with a bit of work there (I know everyone already said that but hey), it could really turn into something super.

Developer

THANKS, honestly for my first full game and hamejam, this coulda gone alot worst XD

I liked the reflex based combat, as I also did in my game. Movement is too fast at the latest version, especially turning is very hard, I think 0.3 second between moves would work better (I use 0.35 second in my game). Visuals needs some work, UI seems scretched. For UI I would suggest you to develop your game on 1920 x 1080 resolution on editor's game window as its most common screen size and had 16:9 ratio.

Developer

funnily enough, I was told it was too slow at 0.30 and halved it XD guess I shoulda lsisten to my gut and sticked it to the normal speed

And yea it should be 1920 by 1080, I just stretched the ui and it looks horrible in general, I just need to get my bearings on ui ALOT better

I personally really enjoyed the fighting. It was a fun mix of quick time events and dungeon crawler. I do think fights could be bit faster and have more variety. Perhaps you can do different attacks and that may give you advantage or disadvantages.

Art and Audio needs a lot of work. I can tell that a lot of care and love is given just needs more work. For UI, I suggest using Unity's UI toolkit and for graphics I suggest using aseprite.

In the end I would love to see this game idea expanded and worked on further. It is very fun to fight, just needs more work in general!

Developer(+1)

Honestly my biggest gripe was the combat, i coded it in a way that made my life harder making me having to fight unity over an input XD

and yea i use gimp for pixel art, i enjoy using that one...

and yea, I do need to improve my UI work, i do stgruggle at stuff like UI alot

all in all thanks fdor the review, I am new to music and sprites and only really done those in just a week or two, so im learning :)

Developer(+1)

On separate note, if I was ever to make another dungeon crawlier I'm certainly gonna make the combat mechanic again but with much needed improvements and refinements.
