This is a keeper, I'm motivated to keep trying to win by testing the permutations.
There are no obvious faults, looks good, sounds good, is challenging.

Developer

Glad you had fun! I am looking forward to building on this project a bit post-jam

Wow this was fun! I love strategy games and I can't believe you pulled this together in such a short amount of time. You nailed the pace of the game and it looks really cohesive with all of the sound effects and the UI styling. Nice work. :)

Developer

Thanks for playing! Glad you enjoyed it!

Well i made it to 50 days :D. Started taking chances and getting a crew half way through, but found them more hassle by the end :P. Think more "reward" needed for their darn food consumption :).
Have you ever played a game called Pardus? It's a web browser space game. If you're after some inspiration for furthering this game, i can highly recommend it.
Great work on bringing this together, well done!.

Developer

Thanks for playing and congrats for beating it! I will have to check out Pardus, ive already started the post-jam expansion and more ideas are always good (as well as playing awesome games)

Wow, very deep game for a game jam! Took me a few days to figure out what to do, but once I did, it was a very fun experience. Got a new favorite so far!

Really awesome what you have done. It feels like a complete game. The UI design is amazing, the gameplay plays well. The game is challenging enough to have replayability. Dude. You don't do things halfway done. For that, two thumbs up:   (imagine they are emojis)

Thanks for playing. Glad you liked it!

Wow, there's a ton going on here. I get big economic board game vibes from the conceit here, so that's going to make me love (and be very critical of) this game. I got to about day 18 before dying because I kept accidentally ending day without moving when I thought I would have enough to make it to the next checkpoint. You'd think that shouldn't happen because there's an "are you sure" popup, but i got into the habit of clicking it every time because it just became rote. I would suggest only doing the "are you sure" popup if there's movement remaining maybe? The events felt like a little too much randomness in that the early game is largely influenced by whether or not you find free food and fuel. If you don't get a lot of that, you have to turn in quests for it (which feels less efficient).

I did have a hilarious moment where I kicked Sally from my ship because I was low on food, but the end of day event gave me 10 food, so I chuckled at that. I then rehired her a few days later as she turned back up at the starport. That sort of emergent story telling would be a really cool thing to flesh out in a bigger version of this game.

Well done on this overall!

Developer(+2)

Thank you for the detailed feedback! Your comment about the event randomness was a good lightbulb moment on how I can help balance the game, change the percentage of the event card types based on number of days. It can start easy and gets a bit harder the closer to day 50. I think the idea of the Are You Sure message is a good route as well. I may put this together since it should be fairly easy to do for a next patch.

Thanks again for trying it out and leaving the comment!

This is absolutely awesome. Beautifully laid out and perfectly implemented. Amazing job.

Developer

Thank you!

I like your game it was fun, though I would've liked it if the ship turned based on the direction it was moving. though that is small.

Developer(+1)

Thanks! I definitely agree on the ship movement. Its one of the first things I plan to do when I expand this project.

I don't usually play strategy games, but somehow I can't stop playing this. Love the art style and the sound effect. I can see the potential of this making into a full game.

Good job.

This is absolutely crazy to be made in 2 weeks for one person. With some more time I can see this being something as fun and complex as FTL and other games like that. This was very enjoyable to play and the game was explained to the user so that even though its a complex game to jump right in to you felt comfortable and not confused. Very impressed by this and had fun playing it. Congrats

Thank you so much for the comments and for streaming it today! Glad you enjoyed it and definitely inspired me to continue going with this project after the jam.

This was amazing, especially considering the 2-week time limit. I found it a bit hard, but tbh I only played a bit. You can definitely develop this further.

Submitted

Really nice game, on theme and so slick.

Great job, really enjoyed it.

Awesome game! A lot of stuff and you still finished it 3 days before the deadine!

Looks like I rather gold over food, my crew abandonned me and I starve alone in the universe. lol

Good job mate!

Submitted

Loved the game!  I have starved twice, but I will play again!  Fantastic visuals!!  Congratulations!

Submitted

For the fact that it is a small (2 week game) it feels quite big.

I may have starved to death out in space, but i had a really good time doing it. I absolutely WILL play this game again!

I really liked the music, the concept, the execution and I will follow this developer to hopefully see what happens with this game.

Great Work!

(Paul E. Messier here) I really enjoyed the tone of the game and appreciated you telling me how to play the game in the game itself, not a lot of these games did that so it's a little step that makes up for a lot. I wanted to see this expanded with more features, it was giving me good vibes overall. Can't wait for your next project!

Resource management is tight in this game. I wasn't able to get to 50 days, but I love the concept.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! Been having a bit of difficulty finding a good balance between too easy and too hard. If you have any suggestions feel free to share.

One of the things I tried to do differently this time around was make the very beginning unreasonably easy to make the player feel like they have got the hang of it. Maybe some smaller, cheaper upgrades available toward the beginning would be easier to plan for. Maybe giving the captain one extra skill point in something would make planning for crew upgrades easier.

Submitted

Bug: In the mission board the ship's side had no scroll bar when I bought the first upgrade and accepted 4 missions.

Bug or missing feature: The "Eject Crew" in the Crew Roster does nothing, so effectively one can't dismiss a crew member...

Visuals: The event popup between the turns should be adjusted against the optical illusion that it looks like the top edge is larger than the bottom edge...

Since one can't set course on top of a tile occupied by a planet (or other object like the star), it might be a nice if clicking the object opened a description with some details about it.

Also, what is that thing you start the game at?

Developer(+1)

Awesome, thanks for letting me know about those bugs! I will get to squashing those out. And good idea on the planet popup info.

Where you start is a warp gate, my original intention was to have multiple systems to fly between but due to timing I had to kill that feature for now.

Submitted

I suspected it being something like that. And giving the system's name along the planet for the missions also kind of hinted at there possibly being more than one.

I can fully understand that flying between systems is something that had to be postponed for a later release. If that's too much work, how about adding some missions to deliver parts with a backstory of it being broken and you need to help the repair crew?

Developer(+2)

I just uploaded a new file with these bugs fixed, appreciate it again for letting me know! I couldn't do a popup msg for the planets and such because I think that would be considered a new feature instead of a bug fix, but I did get rid of the ability to click on those tiles all together.

Now that the Game Jam is over I am looking to continue this project a bit. Id like to do a complete overhaul of the quest system all together, right now it is a pain in the butt to manage and sloppily written. But given more time, id like to add in the other systems and build a more procedural type questing system along with an actual story to the universe.
