Wow what a touching little narrative. I'm sure a lot of people can relate to this. And to build it into a game that plays so well and has a nice progression that goes along side your story. I also think the visuals were great at matching the mood and the little details like the change in facial expressions during animations were a nice touch.

Man, I'm bad at platformers. And you're not making it particularly easy either, heh. Sorry I couldn't experience the whole game, but I can appreciate the art style and story (or what I got of it anyway). It's super impressive that you drew all the assets yourself, big cheers to that!

best games i tried so far, the art style looks amazing

Unfortunately there is only a Windows build. Given the it's actually made in Unreal (even if it doesn't look like it in the screenshots) I can understand there not being a Web version of it. But this also means I can't just fire up Unity and build my own... (I had to throw off Unreal from my machine and it only was on it to try out getting it to run at all in the first place)

So no ratings from me...

The art looks amazing! The double jump and wall jumping all feel great to use. I hope to see more games from you!

Developer

Ty so much Gasterbuzzer. Thats really kind of you. I will definitelty be doing more from now on!!! :-D

Great game!馃ぉ

I really like the puzzles! I'm pretty bad at those though :D

It's really cool how all the assets are hand-drawn, Good job!!

Developer

Thanks for playing Matan! I will be sure to make more brain teasers for you next time as well. :-)

So here's another one that made a platformer focused on story about the journey to recover after a heavy loss.

I liked the game, the visuals were nice and the controls were good.

I felt like the level design was a bit to focused on the wall jump and kinda unforgiving with tiny platforms and precise inputs to pass some parts. Also it felt like the game could explore a bit more on the puzzles.

I noticed that in some parts there were some tiles that didn't properly connect the walls and I think those spots messed up a few wall jumps. It could be just coincidence.

Developer

Ty Barbetta,

The visuals were a first-time effort so was super happy with how they turned out. I was definitely pla- testing predominantly on gamepad and now feel bad about not getting the wallslide feeling better on keyboard. Definiely will improve that for next time. I was learning a lot this Jam so did'nt have much time left for combat, etc, so decided to base everyting around the wall-jumping. Thank you so much for the feed-back, really appreciate it, :-D

I made it to the end! (glad I didn't give up on the wall jumps)

I think making the game personal is really great, it really created a meaningful experience for me. It was tough to be sure! Man I was so happy when I got that double jump!

As soon as I saw the theme, I knew the message that I wanted to tell. Im really aprpeciative that you took something from it. Thank you for playing. :-)

Nice small experience with good aesthetics. Well done working with 2D in Unreal Engine, as it isn't always straightforward.

Developer

Yeah, I definitely got stuck using C++ with Unreal Engine's Paper 2D system several times. But have learned a lot about howq to use it now thankfully! Thank you for the complement about the aesthetics. :-D

The game is very fun, I love just hoping around and specially with that sweet jump sound!

Developer

I'm so glad that you could enjoy the jumping! Will definitely include it in my next game as well. :-D

  • There was one super difficult part of the game where I was stuck so long that I almost gave up. See the image below. Getting back to the right is impossible and climbing upwards is really, really difficult. I got up to the next screen one time but then I fall from there right back to the bottom if the difficult area. You might want to consider making this area either bit more easy
  • Also I relating to that are too but also elsewhere: I would suggest that you would design the levels so that if the player falls from one platforming section, they land somewhere safe in the screen below. It easily feels unfair if the player falls multiple floors from one mistake without even knowing that it is possible.
  • Otherwise  the level structure and progression was really good. It felt like a small Metroidvania because of the double jump ability had to be found. There was also some branching paths and the player needed to come back after getting the ability.
  • I tried playing with the controller. It was cool that had managed to get that working. Not many other games in the jam have controller support! And while on the subject, if you have controller support on the game itself it would be nice that also the menu would respond to game controller. It feels weird if I have to use mouse to interact with menu but then otherwise I play with a controller.
  • The controls felt bit delayed. It was like everything was happening only right after than when  I really pressed the buttons. It might have been my computer too though... And to be noted, I also tested with keyboard so it was not any controller latency.
  • The wall jump was nice to have. You managed to get it to work pretty well!
  • Some things that I would have hoped the game to have was background music, background image (maybe some simple repeating pattern instead of just one color) and more character animations. Those would have brought the game world fully alive
  • Bugs I found:
    • Jumping toward the corner of a platform bounces the character off. This is very dangeroud and might lead to falling after climbing a high distance
    • Jumping from a platform moving up leads to super jump!
Developer

Appreciate all the detailed feed-back! One cheat for some of those tricky parkour jumps is the just drop off a platform before doing the basic jump. I really like games where you can figure out ways to capitilize on the mechanics. I like having platforms with greater risk, because they yield greater rewards. I definitely need to continue developing the wall-jump system so that there is no feeling of delay and it feels more forgiving. Youre also right about the background music too. I should have included a free piece of music, but I really wanted everything included in the game to be made my myself.

Thank you again for the feedback and I will keep it in mind for the next Jam! :-D

Great effort! Especially if this was your first game, really impressive! The handling and controls felt really good, and that's something hard to nail no matter how much experience.

It's funny that my VR headset wakes up when I start your game. I'm assuming it's not meant to be a VR experience? :D Well done and congrats on completing a game!

Thank you so much for playing! It certainly was my first solo Game Jam, but have made a card game in Unity previously. It was an intense 10 days learning about Pixel Art, animation, wall-jumping, interactive scene elements, level design, etc. It was also my first Unreal Game so I think it must have VR settings in there someone I needed to disable. Will be on the look out for that next Jam. Ty so much for letting me know!!! :-)

You need to remove the SteamVR plugin. It is enabled by default.

Liked the art this game! This game has great potential as a metroidvania if combat mechanics are added. Good jumping parkour but beginners in the platforming genre might be overwhelmed by this.

Developer (1 edit)

Ty so much Ric! I would have loved to include combat, but knew it would be out of scope with everything else I had to learn first. Will definitely include combat in my next metroidvania!! Ty!!!  :-D
