I hade a lot of fun with this! the only thing that comes to mind is the platforming is rough, which wouldn't be an issue but resetting due to the jumping or block physics being off feels bad, other than that I had a good time!

Submitted(+1)

How was I supposed to get to the block on the spikes under the platform we start on?  Hint pls!
Saved in my fave game jam games on my profile! this was so much fun, i loved all of the assets put together and I think it was super cute. i hope you add more on to it. Will be back to play again!

Developer

as you fall you need to turn the light switch on :) That's if I'm thinking about the correct level. Let me know!

Submitted(+1)

oh!!! I'll try it today and respond back lol πŸ˜† I saw the spikes and was like ... Oh death is upon me. LoL

Submitted(+1)

Very nice mechanics! Really a good basis for a full game.

I would have loved to get to retry the last level and not have to do the whole game again!

Anyway, congrats for creating your own assets! Amazing!

Submitted

Really cleverly done, and it looks great as well!

I'm not generally a fan of games where the player only has one life and dies on contact with any enemy or hazard, but I suppose this one is short enough to make it work. :)

I especially like how the letter blocks interact with the environment both in the dark and when the light changes the environment. The spooky enemies are very nicely designed.

Very FUN and UNIQUE idea on this game! AWESOME WORK!!! GREAT ART!!! NICE MECHANICS!!! This was a fun challenging game. Loved it.

Submitted

Nice pixel art. The levels are really well designed. Outstanding job! (How regrettable, I only have 1 life too, my last life.)

Submitted(+1)

Very good work! and congrats on making all the art assets. I did that for my game and I know how much work goes into it. I'm still learning pixel art as well. I might be selecting a pixel art course as my choice  for the game jam

Developer(+1)

Yes I'm also learning pixel art and I'm an incredible novice at it so I might also select a pixelart course. I think gamedev.tv use Asperite for their courses if I'm not mistaken and I've actually been using Photoshop to create mine. I'm ready to use whatever is easier as especially creating animations can be a lot of work, which is why I appreciated the 'death' animation on your game! I also dont think that Photoshop is an ideal tool for this kind of work anyway, and its costly. So indeed, lets learn pixelart! lol. Thank you for playing and rating my game :)

Submitted(+1)

I picked up asperite and it is amazing for pixel art! Lots of fun to use too. I'd recommend it

Submitted

Well don't really cool puzzle game, the monsters looked super creepy, well done :)

Submitted(+1)

That death scream will haunt my nightmares! But I love the simplicity and increasingly complex level design that builds upon the core mechanics at just the right level. Would definitely love to see more exploration with the theme. Well done! :)

Developer

:D thank you for playing. I want everyone to experience that death scream at least once but at the same time I didnt want to make the game too hard! Sounds like I might have got the balance more or less right. I have a lot of scope left on my Trello board for this game so will definitely be continuing with it :) Thanks again for playing - I will check your game out too.

I love this game! I love puzzle games with simple controls and quick levels that you can breeze through. I could definitely see myself playing dozens of levels like these back-to-back in one sitting. I do wish it was longer. Also, great job on the pixel art!

Developer

thanks for playing Ryan! I would love to (and will) add more levels to the game but I felt that each one should be somewhat unique and have a decent amount of art to make it feel sufficiently different to the previous level. And for me, the art took the longest part of this jam by a big margin! This is my side project through so I will keep it going and keep building on this base :)

Liked this one! However even if it may have been done this way on purpose for the theme and idea the way you did it to say it's repeating the same dream again, I wonder if starting from the very beginning each time rather than just the room you were last in, could end up feeling more repetitive in a bad way rather than replayable in a fun o challenging way. Other than that I really liked it I think you did a nice job with unique mechanics, nice look and feel, and an overall enjoyable experience.

Developer

thanks for playing. This is a common piece of feedback I've given to other jam games as well where the game is essentially over if you die. I've tried to balance that by making the levels not too hard to do, and also not having too many of them to get through, so hopefully it doesn't feel like a slog. I was thinking about putting a 'speed run' time counter in there but I literally had that thought 10 minutes before the submission deadline so maybe next time :) For a bigger game I think at the moment my preference will be to have some kind of room/level selector where you can go to the last room you were on. Once again, thanks for playing and for the valuable feedback.

Fun game and cool that you created the artwork as it all tied together well. The music and added narrative made it feel surprisingly sinister!

Submitted(+1)

This is so cool and impressive, I loved the fact that when you jump and press space bar button, the lamp switch was so responsive because sometimes you need to precisely hit the spot to trigger something .  I end up beating all the level  ;)

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for playing! Getting the lightswitches to work properly and reliably was the most challenging part of putting this game together. That and optimising the door opening and closing based on the switches being on or off. I really appreciate your appreciation for this :D

Submitted(+1)

Loved the idea of the enemies and spikes dissapearing after turning on the light, was a bit hard sometimes but fair enough that i wanted to try until i completed each level. good job!

Developer

thanks so much. Did you manage to complete it? There are 5 levels or so and I tried hard to make the difficulty balanced/not too hard. Will give your game a look as well :)

Submitted

Wow, this is impressive! The spooky music and pixel art are great, especially the BTAS poster.

Developer

thank you. It took me AGES to do those posters lol. That one in particular took probably the longest.

Submitted

Beat it! Was a wonderful game. The atmosphere was perfect. The strong imagination of a child! loved it.

Developer

thank you for the feedback and for playing :) Really glad you enjoyed it.

Nice little puzzle-platformer! I like the premise and the art is good. Using light switches to make monsters and hazards disappear is a cool idea. The eerie music choice is great.

I wish the game was longer! I definitely think this idea could be expanded on with more mechanics and puzzles. Nice job!

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much. I have a lot of ideas for this one but I kind of got to a point where I needed to decide if I was going to do more art, more mechanics, more levels, or more polish and I chose that last option. Definitely going to be carrying on with this though. Thanks for playing and I will likewise check out your creation.

Submitted(+1)

This is cool - love the atmosphere and overall experience. That could be the next kind of game I should work on :)

Submitted(+1)

The Background art was beautiful. Good work! I will suggest putting some visual effects for the gameplay.

Developer

Thanks for that suggestion. What kind of visual effects are you thinking of? I think it's a great idea - maybe some kind of post processing to make us feel dream-like?

Submitted(+1)

Post-processing is stunning. I never use it, so I can't say much. But yes, a dreamlike scene will be great. I think lighting, color, and particles are necessary. It may need some trial and error, so good luck.

Submitted

Good story. Liked how you set it up. Its spooky xD
