I liked it but I couldn't play it. :(

Developer

oh. what was the problem? too difficult?

Submitted

It is super easy to become stuck without noticing and to have to restart the level, happened to me twice in the first minute of gameplay. I liked the idea though, and loved how the character looks the camera when idle for a while :)

Developer (1 edit)

thanks for playing arielsan. yes, this is really a problem. I thought of adding some kind of detection and then displaying a hint: “oh no - it looks like you are stuck - restart level?”

Nice game man. I was a little bit confused at first, but than I really enjoyed. Really!

Developer(+1)

Thank you. I realized that it is a bit too complicated at the start and not well explained. I plan to continue working on it and improving it.

Really nice mechanic watering the plants to move up platforms! I got a little confused at first (it would be nice if they despawn / shrink so you can have another go).

Music was so calming! Really well done on that, didn't scream game boy but went with the theme very well!

Really enjoyed playing this.

Developer

thank you for playing. I agree with all your points! It’s my first game and my first Jam - so next year I will take more attention to those details.

Great music and great art! I love the watering and animations too!

Keep it up!

Overall I thought this was cute and it was nice to see some puzzles! I got a little frustrated a few times trying to figure things out, but once I got it, things went more smoothly. If you expand this, I hope you add some more "tutorial" elements to it. Good work regardless!

Developer

thank you for playing my game. yes, you’re absolutely right. I plan to keep working on it. I have tons of ideas, like new plant types, new watering mechanisms, seeds, etc. I intentionally wanted it more like a puzzle game than a platformer. but I agree that it’s a bit too difficult to grasp the game mechanism without explanation.

very tricky, but very cute

May I ask you a question? After watering the plants What buttons to climb trees?

Developer

Hi Browny, thanks for playing. there are 2 types of grow-type plants. the first you encounter acts more like a lift. the tricky bit is, that you need to be quick, to jump on the top before it grows too high. I played the game so much during dev, that I only realized late that this is really tricky - but I didn’t have time to make it simpler.

in level 2, the first flower will grow into a ladder. so you should be able to just use Up/Down (W / S) to climb up and down.

Am I dumb for being stuck on level 2? After the ladder plant bit, there's a rock and a drop (where can I go with the rock?), then a plant I can push off but then there's the fast shooting guy... I feel like I'm missing something! I don't wanna rate if I missed something obvious, haha.

Developer

Hi Jack, thanks for playing. you can push the plant back to the left and place it underneath the platform and the rock above it. when you water it, it pushes the rock and then you can push the rock to the right - and use it as shield against the shooter.

Ah OK. That's quite a few mechanics introduced at once. It feels less like level 1 and 2, and more like level 1 and 5, ya know? I think those mechanics could have been introduced by themselves on smaller levels, before being used in concert. But otherwise it's a solid game, nice work!

Developer (1 edit)

thank you for the input. I can see that, too …. but life came in the way of adding more levels….

Nice contrast of chill vibes, nice and relaxed theme, and really punishing puzzles. If there was a restart key (it would count as Select on the Gameboy), then getting stuck wouldn't be that big of a deal. Even better if there are checkpoints.

Cool puzzles, nice aesthetics. Congrats!

Developer

there is a restart - hit <esc> and then select: restart level

Cool game. It can get a bit frustrating restarting whenever you do something wrong, it might be worth while designing levels to prevent players from hard-blocking themselves.

Developer

thank you. yes, that is a good input. I thought of adding checkpoints or more hints. maybe have the game detect a fatal mistake: “Oh oh, you dropped that rock…. restart?” :-)

Nice little game. Loved the small dude and the chill music. There are some control issues (for instance the menus only answer to arrow keys while you can move around with WASD). But overall I had a nice time playing :)

Developer

thanks for the feedback… I played the game so many times, that I might have forgotten about the keymappings. Only now, when I look at the other games, I realize how different I got used to navigate with arrows + space + enter…..
