Nice little game. I felt like I never quite got the timing of the scroll wheel and moving down right. I wonder if it's in part due to the mouse I have. Also, instead of uploading the exe and pak files as separate downloads, you should really make a ZIP file with both and mark it as a Windows download so that it works with the Itch launcher.
Lesson Learned. Will do that next time
Interesting mechanic that I haven't seen before. Great job getting it to work!
Thanks!
I think with a bit more work on the sfx, and generel sound, it could be even better xD
Thank you!
I really like the idea behind this (The jumping noise gets a little annoying tho)
I completely agree with you, I should have toned it down but by the time i realized the problem it was 5am and I didnt want to deal with recompiling lol
Really fun game and creative idea, I haven't seen anything else like this before! I think the mechanic definitely needs more explaining about why the character jumps higher when you scroll the screen down since it was very confusing at first. The mechanic can also be quite frustrating with timing in moments so I do agree with other people that it would probably be more suited to a puzzle game. However, eventually I got the hang of it and as soon as that happen I really started to enjoy the game, it also felt very polished and I didn't find any bugs or glitches, great job!
Yeah, I don't think most people understood what was actually happening, a few early levels with safety nets would have gone a long way. The tilemap I built the level on is what moves, everything else is static
Charming little game, really enjoyed the art and audio (despite it being premade assets).
I love the idea of scrolling as a game mechanic! I personally think it has more potential as a puzzle mechanic than a skill-based platforming mechanic, but that's my personal bias against platformers speaking.
Really well executed, well done!
I agree with you, this game was way harder than intended (weirdly, despite playtesting the difficulty curve) but it defintely has more potential as a puzzle mechanic
The pixel style made everything clean and snappy. It's really inventive to tie camera motion to character physics, I'd love to see more twists on this base mechanic. Great work!
Thank you! I don't think most people understood what was happening lmao, the tilemap that the level is built on is moving, camera is completely static
Great job! This one is a lot of fun. I really like the choice of music and how it combines with the bounce sound. I enjoyed when I could start to get the feel for the level and zip though to the challenging part like I'm a speed runner.
Usually pixel art is distracting for me, but I liked yours. The monochrome made it pleasing without being too stimulating
One idea for improvement. If the first level was simpler, it might easier for the player to grasp the mechanics. Maybe I'm a slow learner but I picked it up eventually haha
I should have made the first level with a saftey net, then I could have allowed people more experimentational freedom and more space to practice scrolling. Will fix if I decide to continue
Pretty much anytime you make me learn an entirely new movement mechanic you are getting full marks for originality. It's actually smooth and well thought out but challenging. movement was consistent and well controlled, though the hitbox is a bit big on the character (I was bouncing a good distance off the edge multiple times.) . One thing to consider is a slider for scroll sensitivity, not generally a worry in platformers but could be critical to allow different mice to perform similarly.
Thank you! The issue with scroll sensitivity that I saw was that someone with a lower/higher scroll sensitvity would possibly be able to make some jumps that weren't supposed to be possible, or vice versa. I'm sure that this could be mitigated with enough testing though, and I will def add that if I decide to expand it
Ohhh, that's a really valid point. It's such a cool mechanic though and it works so well. I am really excited to play more.
Very very happy to hear it!
This put me in mind of the golden age of Newgrounds -- you've done quite well by this idea! I agree with the other commenters saying that you might include a couple "safer" tutorial stages, but I was hooked enough to want to see it all the way to the end (even though I died a bunch).
My only gripe is that I couldn't get the exit key to work (if there was one). I had to quit through the Task Manager. But that's just a QA thing, not game-breaking.
Great job overall!
Thank you! There was supposed to be an exit key, but I forgot. You can Alt-tab out and press the X to close the game
Not bad. A very interesting idea.. Could have used a few easier introduction stages to get used to the scrolling mechanic.
Good point
Really enjoyed the mechanic, the scrolling is quite neat. I did find it really hard to time the jumps sometimes. Maybe a slower jump? Otherwise, really well done
I unfortunately didn't end up with too much time for polishing movement and such things, but I do agree that the jump itself could have been MUCH better. If I expand this game, polishing the jump + adding a trail of some sort to give you a better indicator of where you went would be on the top of my list
I really liked the scroll mechanic for platforming and the game felt great with good pixel art and vibing music some of the levels were incredibly hard though so I think maybe slowing down the jumping speed would be good. Overall good submission!
Thank you! I will consider that if I decide to expand this
Thank you!
really liked the music and art.
Thank you! How was the gameplay!
The scrolling effect is really cool and the art and music are really pleasant, which is great since it relaxes you while getting through the levels, which can be a tricky! My brain seemed to have a hard time seeing the character jump higher, so I would have appreciated something like a trail effect on the character to make the trajectory of their jump clearer! That would have helped me when retrying difficult sections in particular
Thank you for the feedback! Do you think the trail should continue existing after the player dies? I feel like that might get a bit confusing, but I do agree having a trail until you die would be a good improvement, it didnt occur to me lol.
I don't think it's super helpful if it exists after you die, but having one while you're alive would help! It's the same reason a lot of platformer/action characters have scarves or capes, because your eye processes where you are vs. where you were and it becomes more intuitive to predict your own movement
Never actually thought about that, that is a really good and subtle idea
Ridiculous controls scheme that makes it a very fun and challenging game, love it
Thank you!
Fun and frustating
Excellent!
pretty frustratingly good!
Glad to hear it!
