Truly a masterpiece. The rhythm driven gameplay, the awesome and satisfying sound effects, the retro inspired graphics and, the star of the show, the maginificent tune that fills the game, everything in Slave to the Rhythm makes me smile with satisfaction and makes me want to spend day and night playing it. This exquisite game brings a new take on the rhtyhm and “asteroids-like” games by combining both in a terrific experience. The simple mechanic is completely explored and ties it perfectly to the out of control genre, whilst working quasi perfectly.

The only negative elements I found in this game is that there is a almost imperceptible dyssynchrony between the ships actions and the music. Even though it barely made itself noticeable I found it a little hard to sync myself to the actions, making the game a just little harder to play (which is considerable in an already pretty challenging game). The other critique is that everything on display was too similar, making it somewhat confusing and hindering some of its light. Lastly, even though I enjoyed the flashing menus, it may present itself as a hindrance to some people.

Despite this small problems, this is deffinetely a 5/5 game. It is insanely fun to play and the challenge it presents is worth your time. And only to make me even more mesmerized, Mr. Beekeper achieved this level of quality in only 48 hours. Thank you for making this game and good job.

Wow, thanks for playing and rating it! I appreciate the feedback!

The presentation is really good, but it's hard to control and it's also a little confusing (the enemies have the same color of the player and of the bullet).

Overall It's a cool game, well done !

This game is really good. The gameplay, the music, the graphics (other than the unfortunate flashing text), out of all the games I've played from this jam, this is definitely my favorite! Only thing I feel is missing is for it to save high scores, that would have been nice.

Trippy game look! Unfortunately I don't think the control scheme was something I could ever get used to even after several tries. Kept dashing into the enemies haha

Submitted

Thanks for bringing it to the stream...twice lol

Developer

Haha... sorry bout that. I got confused. Thanks for playing!

so simple yet so effective. The gameplay is insanely addictive and brutal, and after a few minutes i started to bang my head to the rhythm without realizing it. Is also the little touches that make this game a serious contender for the first place: the hypnotic menus, the combo system and the particles. 5/5

This game makes me go YES!

Hot dang, that's really fun. I'm not too good at rhythm  games, but this one delivered in a way that made rhythm games more accessible. Though it's also difficult and I'm not very good at it. XP

As an advocate for accessible games, I think I might recommend a toggle for games with lots of strobe. Just to change the UI elements to be a little more stable as the very first screen a player sees.
On a gameplay side, dunno how difficult it would be to implement, but because of the crosshair being tied to the mouse, I think it would be a smoother experience with a continuous camera because the edges are hard to navigate.

Otherwise really fun and well executed.

Toaster recommended I check this game out, heck that's pretty good. Really dig this. If I were to trot out my niggles though, they would be that sometimes an enemy can get spawned in my path such that it really feels there wasn't much i could do. Also, as I kept the cursor very close to the ship so i could spin it around in the period between the move and the shoot the fact that sometimes shots go in weird directions when your cursor is close became very noticeable. But that aside, an awesome game.

Thanks for the feedback! I'll definitely keep accessibility in mind for next time.

excellent and original concept , the music fits the game well , Great job!

Thank you! I appreciate it!

Yea, you should look into epilepsy and designing your games in such a way that you don't give unsuspecting epileptics a seizure.

That said, I'm not epileptic so I enjoyed the game :P. Perfect little slice of an arcade game. You immediately understand how to move. Just next time consider your players' eyesight. <3

Developer

Thanks, I did put a warning on the game page, but maybe that's not enough.

Eyes hurt after playing too long but perfect execution as a GMTK submission: Simple, yet elegant, one mechanic serving multiple different roles, difficult but not impossible, AND integration of music and rhythm into a tried and true genre. Mark Brown will love this, ticks all the boxes. I'd be surprised if it's not in his follow-up video on the Jam.

Flashing lights are a bit much but that is the only negative I have. Very well done

Developer

Thanks so much! And yeah, I probably overdid it with the strobe lights.

Lol it happens. Don't worry; Gameplay always triumphs over art style

great twist for a shoot em up, big fan of the combo systems. the red-white-black aesthetic is striking but i wish it was easier to make out the player amidst the horde of enemies. overall a very enjoyable lil game :)

Developer

Thanks a lot!

I'm too old I manage to do almost NOTHING! XP

But very cool concept, love the colour palette you took from that falling game (probably), great sound effect and feedback!

I liked the idea of the game i always love these rhythm controlled games when it’s well done like this. I think as a game jam submission it would be nice to have an easy mode so people could play to the end if they wish. I tried to finish the game but i wasn’t progressing a lot and the game over screen was too bright for my eyes after dying a few times.

Developer

Thanks!

I loved the style and rhythm, but unfortunately was too bad at this. Still enjoyed my 10x10 second runs. :)

Is there a chance to listen the soundtrack separately from the game on some platform?

Developer(+1)

Yes! I have a bandcamp: https://misterbeekeeper.bandcamp.com/track/slave-to-the-rhythm

Awesome twist of the idea, warning for the style should be more obvious. I like the concept so much. I think the problem is the difficulty increases way too fast. Perhaps you could have smaller player and enemies. Also first couple of minutes would be nice to have just one enemy spawn to adapt to gameplay.

Other than difficulty, and reeeally volatile art style of the menu, you're game is lit. Has a lot of potential.

Thanks for the feedback!

I really dig the idea and it is a very interesting idea to control a character!

However, at first I was extremely confused, why I am moving forwards at some points and at certain points backwards.

Also, you should add a warning for the flickering effects at the very beginning (or for your text in general). It is very hard to read and might cause some problems for some people

Developer

Thank you! I did add a warning on the description page, but I probably should have made it more obvious.

Submitted

Ohhh, yeah, I see! The problem is that if you access a game via the submission page, you do not see the game's description, just the tagline and what you answered to the questions :)

Developer(+1)

Yeah, too bad. I'm going to see if I can do something about that.
