I really like your game! Also that was a new experience with that game engine!

simple yet effective, i really enjoyed playing this. i also really enjoyed the take on the theme and the atari-esc visuals!

I got to 3200 score before I stopped playing because there didn't seem to be anything else to do. I think it would benefit from a time limit, or maybe the player should get a game over if they touch the floor, that way they would have to try and keep the player object always on the platform. It would add a layer of skill and give players a reason to try  play again and try to set a higher score. I think something as simple as making the floor lava would add a lot to this game

nice relaxing game, I would suggest having a visual representation of the borders to reduce the guesswork on when the player will change direction

Respect mate for doing atari game. Tho it is very simple, gameplay is surprisingly nice.

Great game, enjoyed the cool gameplay. Nice interpretation of the theme by controlling the platform instead of the player. Well done.
I would appreciate if you try my game too :)

pretty fun when i manage to chain combo on the player! but the player move too fast

the game's pretty fun for a while :), but i feel like the player moves a bit too fast at first. ive also seen this idea on a few other games i played in this jam. in my opinion, the art can use some work, and it kinda sucks that there isn't any audio

Submitted

Needs better art, hard to play and not very creative

Well Done!

I mean game is pretty simple, but it works, its fun, and it doesnt have anything that annoys me like some overscoped games do. It perfectly accomplishes what it tries to do. Also respect for doing atari game

Very simple game, it's pretty fun but you could've added more things to make the game interesting. All in all it's pretty good for such a simple concept.

Can't say that I expect to see Atari here, a nice and simple game. It takes me a while to learn how to play it though.

Submitted

Can't say I've seen any other Atari style games on the jam, so points for the originality! Gameplay itself is simple, but it can be fun. I just wish it had some sort of time limit or other fail condition.

So this is actually a functional atari game running in a web emulator? Wow! Big style points for that. Easy to understand and play, I wish there were some sound but I clicked a bunch of the emulator buttons before starting so maybe I broke it? Great job

Developer

There was no sound, you didn't break anything. Also, can I say you might have been the first person I encountered (in the jam that is) that understood that. Like it seems like most people didn't understand this is actually coded using Batari Basic for Atari Games, so even though this thanks may not be the most logically sound thanks for knowing that and/or figuring it out.

I'll have to look into Batari Basic, I'm assuming its not far off from just assembly. I'm sure it wasn't easy to crank out a whole game in 48 hours that runs on such ancient hardware.

Developer (2 edits)

Actually, Batari Basic is very easy, but due to my currently limited skills, ancient hardware limitations, not having the whole time due to religious reasons, and not going to ruin my health and/or risk anything near submission time plus possibly other things, it turned out to be this (though I can be lazy sometimes as well). Actually, the jam caught me during a time where I was figuring out what to make with more complex art and stuff, so it took away the chance of me being able to make a game with better visuals though if it was later maybe it still would have been looking similar to this.

Here's a link to the IDE and potentially something in Batari Basic: 8bitworkshop IDE

Really simple game but good job on releasing your first one on itch!

Neat little game!

I think the game could use an obstacle of sorts, or, at least, a way to punish the player if they drop the cube/play badly. I feel like something simple like a time limit could already do the trick, but adding negative-score cubes could also help!

Still though, it is fun to mess around with for a bit, and I do very much appreciate that the platform moves at the same horizontal speed as the cube, even when moving up!

This is super simple in a good way. I think it could use some more variety though, like obstacles or the ability to make the box jump when you go up with it. Great job, though!

Hey you asked for straight criticism on discord so I'm gonna list things that I would improve.

One easy thing would be to define the playing area better. Right now the collision is somewhere in the middle of blue square, if you had actual walls that the square hits it would make it easier to plan your movements, as well as look less glitchy.

Another tiny thing to adjust would be the flickering of the player, it was pretty noticeable and getting rid of it would also make the game look a lot less glitchy.

The one big thing your game is lacking is a goal. If you want to stick with the hyper minimalistic approach which I'm all for, is to just add a high score and a timer, and you try to get as many objectives as you can within the timer.

And honestly, if you don't want to add a bunch of bloated mechanics and levels etc, and just leave it as a clean minimalistic arcade game, the only thing it is actually lacking is polish / game feel / game juice. I would have used your remaining 16 hours to first make a goal, and then watch "The Art of Screenshake" on youtube twice, and proceed to add as much juice into your game as humanly possible in 14 hours.

Just some very quick to implement features for the juicyness feeling would be to add a small audio effect, a tiny particle explosion, and some screen shake for every time you get a goal.  Also I would probably make the goals rotate infinitely in a circle and make them a cleaner shape than a rectangle. Besides that, you could find a nice free 16 bit music track and have it play on the background, and then try your hardest to implement as much game feel principles that you learned from art of screen shake as you can.

Would love to see this game in a bit more polished state, I'm all for simple fun arcade games and the idea fits the theme perfectly!
