Great idea and premise, taking a style of game and putting you in the shoes of the often overlooked cameraman. The idea alone made me smile.

As others have mentioned the controls were a little clunky. I couldn't really tell what the JKL buttons were actually doing, and it was hard to tell what the game wanted for zoom level. That said I actually did have fun trying to just keep Hony in the center of the lens, and I thought the camera shake added to the experience. It both made it a bit more challenging, and it kinda made me feel like I was on my own skateboard trying to keep the camera steady with all the shakes that come with being on a skateboard.

One thing I really enjoyed was the skateboarding action itself. It was impressive how much he moved around and how many tricks and objects he was interacting with, so I appreciate the attention to detail there. It made me wonder if the route / tricks are hard coded, or if there is some randomization and AI on Hony's side.

Also, I appreciated the Flash-style artwork. Brought back some Newgrounds memories :D

Developer

Thanks for the feedback. I agree that the game probably could have used some alternate controls, especially something like using 1/2/3 to control focus as an alternative to J/K/L. I'm glad you had fun and enjoyed the details with the skater animations

The routes are randomly generated each time, and Hony procedurally increases or decreases his speed using several metrics in order to keep him moving around the screen so the player is engaged. All of his tricks and animations happen dynamically as he collides with obstacles, and rails cause him to change lanes, forcing the player to adjust camera focus.

It's a very novel concept and really out of the box thinking. It really fits the theme well. The camera drift / shake is a cool idea but I found myself spending all my effort fighting to keep Hony in frame and didn't really think about any of the other features. This isn't necessarily a bad thing as it's engaging enough to be the core game loop on its own and the others could just be trimmed out, but that depends on what your vision of the game is. Overall its a very innovative game, well done!

Developer

Thanks for the f feedback, we added the camera shake and drift to keep the difficulty somewhat high and allow for a higher skill ceiling. We noticed during development that without them, it was too easy to keep Hony in frame and there was not enough reason to zoom out.

I love where you were going with this! Lots of competing ideas, but with more time you could have smoothed them out.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback, and we're glad you liked the concept. Could you elaborate on what ideas were competing, just so we know for the future?

Totally! I guess I mean there's a lot of mechanics, like the zooming which make it a bit hard to control.

This was a creative game but it has too many mechanics to be fun, i get adding the zoom in an out even tho i think its unecessary as well, but the lane shift is too hard to keep track of and to just have fun, also the hand positions necesarry are down right uncomftrable.  With some polish and gameplay changes this would be an awesome game

Simple, but really fun and creative!

This was fun! I really enjoyed your intepretation of the theme. The controls feel pretty challenging in a good way! Great job!

I liked the concept, but I wish the shakiness of the camera was balanced a little more so it would feel more like it's a game about keeping your movements precise to correctly follow the skater. I liked the art style, tho, and some tweaks to the main theme would make it better. Overall, I appreciate your effort

I liked the idea more than the execution itself. The camera felt a bit too... jumpy? Not sure how to say it, and the shot that the game rated as "the best" were weird.

I think it would work well on a gamepad and with a bit more polish. Keep it up tho!

Developer

Yeah we wanted to keep it somewhat difficult, so there's camera sway and drift towards the center, but I could imagine if it was too much. And ideally I would have liked to do framing based on percentage of Hony within the camera's collider, but we didn't have the time, so I made Hony have three invisible colliders (Board, Body and Head). I think the camera's collider adjustment when zooming could use a little fine tuning as well.

High score 3194.

Really amusing concept. I had a great time. It took me a 1 terrible run as a camera man to fully get the mechanics and now that I do I am ready to be a camera operator. All jokes aside, I think it's a pretty good game. I liked how frantic it felt. I think it was a really good idea to have each of the 3 major systems( framing, focus, and zoom) be what your score is dependent on, and I liked that it was about finding the balance between all three and trying to keep them in the green. Well done. I don't have much feedback only that I think it could be made a little clearer that Hony Tawk has switched lanes.  Thank you for making this :D

GREATE GAME! Great Gameplay and Great execution. I had a great time.

Btw. Do you know if I can put the Hi-Score 2754 on my CV if I applied for a job as a camera operator?

I like how you can change your zoom to make your own difficulty. The controls require getting used to, but i got to top 3 on leaderbords so I think I got it :D

hony Tawk is proly my favorite bate skoarder.  It was fun getting to film his stunts.

Far out! Nice concept on the theme. The hardest part was getting used to the controls; it's a lot to keep track of. It wasn't shared in the "How to Play" page, but I find using the Arrow Keys with my right hand were much better than WASD, otherwise it's too much responsibility and swapping around for the left hand. Would make it even better if JKL were moved to 123, then you don't have to dance your hands around the keyboard.  Good entry!

Developer

Very true, I was considering adding 1,2,3 as additional controls for focus but forgot about it as we kept working on the game. Alternate controls would go a long way

I liked all the different camera operations!

Really clever take on the jam theme, good job!

It takes a little while to get used to, I think controller support would be great in a post-jam update. Left stick could be used to move around, right stick could be for the zoom, and the L/R triggers could be for focusing. Definitely appreciated the writing in the how-to-play screen, and the little visual touches such as the camera screen actually displacing the position of the things it's filming were all very nice. Shout-outs to the cool music too, always love it when these game jams use original tunes!

A bit confusing at first, but overall a very intresting and cool take on the theme. Well done
