The level design is good, starting off very easy and introducing 1 new thing at a time. I found the jump arc a bit weird, too high and not far enough so most gaps require a double jump. The limited movement energy is a nice twist, and I found the music very atmospheric. Did you do the fire animation yourselves? It looks really good and i especially enjoyed the colour switch.

Developer

The fire animation was the particles2D node.  I just had to get the correct properties for it to work. Thank you for your feedback! the jump arc was meant to mostly teach you about the double jump ^^

Nice platformer with a catch :)
I like those neon graphics with the trace behind the player :

I hear a click in your background loop  at the end/beginning. This could be resolved by making sure the loop starts/ends at 0db/the zero-crossing. This could be done e.g. with Audacity and the fade in/fade out effect.

Developer

A click in the background? I don't think I ever heard that  or heard anyone mention that unless it's the  last theme. The last theme has a little metal guitar at the end which I forgot to cut out but since it was very little I didn't bother with it much.

I liked the concept but the controls were a bit frustrating to me. High narrow jump and very quick fall. I felt that I always needed to double jump, which consumed my health bar a lot.

Couldn't go past the third level, but I'm generally bad at these kind of game :')

Developer

That's okay! if you're bad at this game then that is normal since this is meant to be a hard game at times.  The game was trying to teach the player that double jumping too much will get you killed at the 2nd and 3rd level. Thank you for the feedback!

awesome game

As i love rage-'try again quick' games i really had fun playing it. Visuals are great, 'music' on the background doesn't get annoying at the mechanics adds an interesting puzzle side to the whole thing.

I couldn't finish it, i found a bit unfair to repeat the 'key' area if you die after that (maybe next one was the last area, so it is like a 'final boss').

PD: Found a small bug on the second area: if you move left back to the entrance, you fall down to the bottom of the scenary, and can still walk from there

Developer

Thank you for your feedback,Avatarer! I understand that it can be too unfair that you gotta re spawn from the start after getting the key. That left entrance bug happens due to there being no tilemap collisions to stop it from going there, very sorry about that!

The visuals of the game are simple but interesting.  I like the streak trailing behind the character to show the trajectory of movement.

Unfortunately, I couldn't get past the second area. I'm really terrible at platformers, so the precision jumping around the spikes with the limited movement was pretty punishing for me.

Respawning instantly after death threw me off a bit, since I would still be pressing a movement key causing the character to move right after respawning (and sometimes immediately die again, haha!).  But I can see how this would be preferable for someone trying to speedrun the game.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback spoonbill! I am glad you liked the trail,it was one of the things that made it satisfying to play for me. It's normal that you couldn't couldn't pass the second area, this game isn't for everyone and it can be really hard at times specially for someone who isn't so good at platformers. The respawning instantly after death was made just because people would die a lot but I understand how it can mess the player up a bit.

I see by the comments below I missed the shift power-up feature! Drat

The controls and jumping were actually pretty good. The atmosphere is calm and I like that for a platformer. The trail behind the character is really good. It helps to learn the jump mechanics. More games should use that idea

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the feedback,Pete! I am glad people are liking the trail cause it was one of the things that made me mess around the game and have fun much more than I thought it would :D

Also, great first entry!

Thanks! :D

The glow really helps to set the atmosphere up, Loxmer. The game might be made only of shapes, but it still has quite a personality, and ends up being quite enjoyable to play.

Personally, I would've liked to have a run button, since for me the horizontal speed was a bit slow.

I hope you don't mind, but here are some thoughts:

  • For platformer games in general, I think a good effect that fits a lot of situations is a squish when jumping. It really helps sell the impulse the character gets while jumping;
  • I also think some SFX and a nice, wet reverb on them would be a great plus on the already interesting atmosphere.

Also, the Shift power up was quite interesting, since it also fills your blood as I think I noticed. The instant respawn is also quite welcome, since at least for me I died a lot 😅 got stuck at the second shift level, sadly.

TLDR: Really nice game! The shapes, glow, and other effects (such as the trail and the particles) really add to make it fun to play.

Developer(+1)

Thank you for your feedback!  I understand what you mean with the squish and the game having some SFX. Yes the shift power up does heal you,it was something I thought would be interesting since you're doing a movement and healing yourself at the same time. I am glad you had fun :D

Nice game! I couldn't beat the "Shift" level though, too tough for me hehe.

I liked:

  • nice atmosphere, fire particle fx
  • that I had to calculate the jumps not to use up my "stamina"

Could be improved:

  • controls and abilities explanation
  • in the second screen I somehow got out of bounds on the left side of the leve
Developer

Thank you for feedback fmazam! Yes you  can off in certain levels and it is due to me not keeping collisions there, very sorry about that but since it's not so game breaking I decided to just not update the game just for that.  I do agree that abilities and controls could have been explained more and it was going to in a certain point but that part of the game got scrapped due to time management.  I am glad you liked the atmosphere and the particles :)

Great art design! The game feels solid and well made, and I’m glad you respawn instantly so you don’t have to wait at all. Too difficult for me though. Nice work :)

Developer

Thank you for your feedback! I am glad you liked the game. This game certainly isn't for everyone as it can be quite hard at times so I understand you :)

I think it's an interesting concept, but I find that it doesn't add anything to the gameplay - it could work as a mechanic in a puzzle game, but since there's only one straight path to take and everything is so punishing (hitboxes, amount of movement available, etc) it doesn't beget any choices nor experimentation: you either see the path and can execute it or you don't... which is how most platformers work anyway.

I really like, however, the art style: it's a great example of how you can make a game look good with minimal resources, and it's very clear in conveying information across.

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much for your feedback! I do agree that this game could have gotten more ways instead of being this linear. There are very little aspects of choosing what to do but not too big and I probably could have done this better. If I ever come back to this concept again,I'll try to experiment more. I am glad you like the art style,it was my first time doing a very simple art style for a game :D
