Blood Is Fuel

Game Description
A short game where you fight you way through a maze to the end.

How does your game tie into the theme?
Enemies leave behind lights in the form of gravestones. These light up the dark labyrinth allowing you to see better. You can also place down your own lights at the cost of health. The lights fade slowly over time.

Really fun to play. Well done. Also good music selection. Congratulation

This was really fun! I think having a sword swing animation and attack would be cool. It took me a long time to realize that the damage I was doing was enemies moving into my sword. Great job!

Nice game. Bonus points for the great making-of video!

With no attack button, I kind of wished there was more feedback from when I hit something with the sword. Like maybe a bit of knockback on enemies. I'm all about physics-based combat (eg: Die By The Sword, Examina), so I like this approach. Who needs an attack button anyways? Kudos for challenging those standard tropes.

Nice work.  Not sure if you know about this but when you maximize the game using the Itch.io button on the bottom right, it changes the resolution so you see more of the map and the game becomes easier.  I like the concept of attacking enemies with my mouse - like I'm actually holding the sword.

Developer(+1)

Thank you for letting me know. I usually make sure this is not the case but obviously I forgot to make sure the game doesn’t reveal more of the map when maximised.

Great job! I think some of the ideas (like switching weapons and dropping light sources) were a little half-baked but could really shine with more time. My best piece of advice is just to keep doing more of these jams. At the start you'll be more focused on trying to figure out godot than trying to figure out your game haha but once you get comfortable with it you'll be free to spend more time fleshing out the mechanics. Solid work though, very impressive for your first game.

I've been using Godot since around 2020 but with 4.x lots has changed and it's a bit like re-learning the engine. I plan on entering more jams next year

Oops, my bad. I thought this was your first time making a game for some reason. Misunderstanding on my part, I must've misread something lol. Good job regardless!

Nice game! I didn't really need to place lights and I preferred to save them in order to increase my health, so maybe instead of just emitting light they could do something else like keep enemies at bay, etc. I appreciated the 'attack with the mouse' mechanic but didn't see a reason to switch between weapons - unless I missed something? Such as unique enemies that require specific weapons to eliminate etc...

Congrats on your first game! It's a solid entry and well executed!

Thanks for the feedback! The switching weapons was a bit of a gimmick and if I had more time I would have made the gravestones give you an attack boost.

I played this game... The Kenny asset you used, in my opinion, fits really well... I was thinking of using it myself, haha. The idea of enemies' graves providing light or restoring life is very clever – definitely an innovative and curious mechanism.

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much. Kenny assets are so good and were perfect so I didn't spend the whole week making art.

chill soundtrack, I like it!

I see you have taken "Blood is Fuel" to its logical extreme on this one. Graves emitting light doesn't make the most sense, but using your own life to drop powerful light emitters and be able to pick them back up is actually a fairly interesting take on this Theme.

I can tell when it's Navigation Agent being used on something. They move smoothly and run at you without much other thought. You're not the first submission I've seen either to use this tool.

Overall, it's a competently made product with an interesting take. Well done as a solo dev.

Thank you. I need to take some time to learn another way to create enemy ai.
