An explanation of some choices:
I find Romano-Celtic religion really fascinating. Historically Nodens (or Mars-Nodens, as he's sometimes known) is a great example of how the Romans adopted and co-opted the beliefs of the people they conquered. The jumping-off point here was imagining what it might be like if these curse tablets actually worked.
The text at the start is a translation of the Silvianus Curse Tablet found at the Lydney Park temple complex. If you look around the temple, you can find some more historical easter eggs, too! Speaking of the temple, it's a (somewhat squished) replica of the real-life one.
Nodens is depicted with the face of a dog firstly because I am not an artist, and secondly, because some of the finds at the site included a dog figurine with a human face. Reversing it is my one bit of artistic license!
Speaking of dogs, the doctor has one because they were regarded as a healing animal - and it's said that Britain had the best dogs in the Roman empire, for both hunting and companionship.
In real life, Silvianus' ring was thought to have been discovered fairly far away, in a field in Silchester - inscribed with Senicianus' name, no less! Of course, as Nodens discovers, Senicianus is a more common name than people think - so it's likely that the 'cursed ring' is actually just a funny coincidence.
I hope you enjoy playing!
