Unique reverse pong idea. I managed to get 6th place.

I think a slight tweak to the physics would make the game feel a little better and lead to higher scores. Currently the ball feels too heavy and the jumps are too extreme.

Pretty neat game, really enjoyed playing it. Nice mix of flappy bird and pong.

Thanks for playing!

Fun and relaxing game, nice twist with the classic pong we all know
Wish it had a bit more diversity, it can get a bit repetitive after a while, so scoring is a bit fun-lacking

Otherwise great experience !

Your game is so clean.
Playing it is very relaxing,
If the paddles are on opposite side it becomes nearly impossible to hit the bottom (and sometimes it launches the ball downward).
Well, that was only a minor issue compared to the fun I had.

Developer

Thanks for playing and liking it! I've played it a little more myself and agree that buffer zones should be added.

A classical but with a twist , nice job GG !

Okay So it a great game idea as proven by one of the last game jam's winning games (pong up) I don't know if that was your inspiration or it just happened, Would have like more juice to the game and more variety, Paddles slightly bigger, the arena slightly bigger but gets shorter with time would be cool to add too :) Congrats on the submission!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! I did try to play the last Gamejam winners, but Pong Up never worked for me so it was a happy coincidence. You're right that there needs to be more juice, what I have now is pretty simple.

Yeah, realized that when I tried to play pong up too, the HYPLAY setup isn't working so game is basically inaccessible at the moment 😂

Great game idea! It just gets a bit tricky when the paddles go to the edges, making it hard to hit. Sometimes the ball would bounce off the top of the paddle and count as a miss.

Developer

Thanks for playing! The hitbox problems are a bit better after I increased the size of the game on the itch page.

Fun concept, simple execution. I agree with the other reviews that you need to put the interaction on pointer down instead of up. That would really make this come alive. A larger board would be welcome to make it feel like I can maneuver, and would also allow for some pickups that could be interesting.

Developer

Thanks for playing! I definitely wanted to add some powerups but ran out of time. Boardsize is something I didn't explore before but it's worth doing in the future.

Pong mixed with Flappy Bird - very cool. Simple yet very addictive.

Also some of the best use of Hyplay I've seen in the jam so far.

As far as feedback goes:

  • Having the input be registered on mouse up as opposed to mouse down was frustrating - especially because the game requires very tight timing
  • My runs basically always ended as soon as the paddle relocated to the very top or very bottom - I think maybe they should have some buffer from the edges
  • I think making the hitbox for the paddle a bit larger would feel better. There were times where the ball hit the paddle from the top, and I would expect it to register as a hit, but it wouldn't.
  • Having the blue outline on the paddle fade slowly over time after hitting as opposed to disappearing abruptly would be a nice little extra detail for polish

Very well done, I had a lot of fun with this game.

Thank you for playing! I'll try to address each point I haven't done before. A buffer zone is probably a good idea, I had some trouble when it hit the edges as well haha. I actually encountered the hitbox problems that some other people mentioned had and thought I fixed it. Turns out I had to increase the size of the game on the itch page since I was usually testing in full screen mode. The blue outline disappearing slowly is also a good idea, I'll try to add that in when the jam ends.

what a BIG IDEA! Control the ball... That's amazing!

One of those games that seem short but you end up hooked for 3 hours wondering if I'll do better next time... very good, congratulations

Developer

Thank you for playing,! I'm glad you enjoyed playing.

Nice idea. Had fun, but score didn't show up on the leaderboards.

Developer

Thanks for playing! Someone else mentioned this and I realized I forgot to mention this, but you have to click the Share button to upload it to the leaderboard, I should've been more clear about this. However if you want you can go into My Profile and sync your scores through there.

Very challenging game! It took me a while to understand how to play (a short description in the game page would help people get in the game more easily). Well done :)

Minor remark: IMO, the jump action should be triggered when the mouse button is pressed (not when released), it would make the control feel much more responsive.

Developer

Thanks for playing! I think a description would be a great idea, I'll probably add one soon. I didn't realize that it's triggered when it's pressed not released so thanks for heads up.

Interesting concept- from the name itself I was wondering what was going to be the gameplay, but you executed it fairly well!

Disappointed to not see my high score properly displayed, however.

Developer

Thanks for playing! Sorry about the highscore not being updated properly. I'm not sure what happened, but there's an option to sync your personal high score and leaderboard score in the profile page.
