Description
In this project I was inspired by both the image and the phrase "The Lost City". The track is divided in two conceptual parts: "The Discovery" and "Entering the Gate" (from around 1:10). At the first part I tried to convey the encounter with the gate or passage to the lost city and at the second one the transit into this mysterious alternative old world.

Description of Setup (Optional but recommended)
I produced this track with Cubase Elements, and most of the instruments are from Halion Sonic presets. My first intention was to record some stuff from actual acoustic instruments, but at the end I did not have time to properly set up the mic, so I ended up using VSTs for everything.

As always, even with just a few instruments I struggled a lot with the mix, with several tries, none of them convincing. The main problems I faced were keeping the chord hits at 0:29 heavy and effective while keeping the piano at the beginning gentle enough, but having the overall levels high enough for avoiding the need for the listener to turn the volume up. My first try was applying some heavy limiting and compression, but it sounded too flat, so I applied some milder compression to the master out, and specific compression to the left piano drone hand.

I also wanted to develop further the second part adding some percussion and noisy background, but did not come with any idea which improved upon the bass and melody dialogue, so I finally decided to leave it as is, which I guess gives it some more intimate feeling. I also tried to eq a bit the guitar on the high end, but it made it sound artificial, so I kept it without modification.

Regarding reverbs, I am always wary of using them, so everything has the reverb coming with the preset, and only the left hand of the piano has some little reverb applied.

I hope you like it and any feedback is more than welcome!

I think the piano is a bit dry.

For reverb, you can go a lot wetter. A way to manage it is to cut out the high and low. As fox mentioned, I also got the same trick from Ty about cutting out the bass reverb to reduce some of the muddiness of it.

A lot of cool ideas here, it's a cool piece overall. It's just thirsty! Heh. The mix is still clear overall and panned well.

Great work! :)

All right its a pretty calm piece, I like most of the ideas you wanted to go for. For feedback, you mentionned reverb I don't think you need to be afraid, play with the wet/dry signal for the intensity, look for the feedback you want adjust to your taste, and a nice trick I got from Ty is put a low cut to 500hz, reverb lows creates mud easily. I would alos look into your hits at around 55 secs, playing thirds on the low registrer does not go well in general so the arrangement plays a good part in what sounds good, even with nothing mixed, a well balanced piece with only instruments can sound decent, adding the mixing procedure will just make it sounds even better. Good job :)

No need to feel pressurized to add a lot of instruments, as in my experience, adding instruments "just because" will tend to just muddy the arrangement. In this ambience jam, I think your minimalistic approach really makes the track shines through.

Regarding the chord hits at 0:29 and reverbs, I found some success using parallel processing for these kinds of situation. Basically you make 2 tracks of the same instrument, set one with no reverb and the other with 100% wet reverb, then you balance the two using the gain/volume mixer. This way you'll have more control over the "main body" of the sound and the reverb as well. Try and see if it works for you.

Great job overall !

Thank you so much for the feedback and detailed advice. I will try that method for sure!

Very subtle and ominous, almost like sneaking around. The pads and noise add a great touch.

Thank you!

Very nice piano at the beginning. I like how intimate it is with few accents. Also pretty good transition into the more sci-fi territory.
Great job!

Thanks a lot!

A great combination of strong ambient bass, my favorite synths, once again synths and plucking! Even an atmospheric guitar towards the end.....

I love the fact that the track can be repeated an infinite number of times! The silence at the end clashes well with the light piano at the beginning.....

In short - I liked it!

Thank you so much, dear Fox! A Gate to Infinity it is, then. <3
