Three orchestral tracks for a dark fantasy RPG soundtrack.

Mostly inspired by Night on Bald Mountain, Michael Hoenig's Baldur's Gate soundtrack and Motoi Sakuraba's Dark Souls soundtrack.

01 The Mountain King - Main Theme

This would play in the main menu and also while you're creating your character. For this purpose it would be made into a loop, but there would be a standalone version like this for the soundtrack. The 5/4 rhythmic pattern played by the brass and piano would be a leitmotif featured throughout the soundtrack - similar to how Baldur's Gate revisits the same harmonic ideas in lots of the tracks.

02 The Mountain King - The Great Hall

This short cue would play when the player enters the arena to fight the Mountain King. It could play during a cinematic or a sting triggered by the player in engine.

03 The Mountain King - Final Battle

Some epic boss fight music - also in 5/4. The breaks in the music are intended to be controlled by middleware software and play at key points in the fight - triggered by how much health is remaining. Eg. halfway through, during story developments or before the final push at the end etc. The final flute note at the end would play when the fight is over.

Heh the beginning reminds me of Kung Fu Hustle.

The mix is awesome, the composition is good. I think maybe some of the instrumentation still sounds a little MIDI choppy - and I hear this a lot on professional tracks even so it's not like something a lot of people will necessarily pick up on. I find that the best way around this is to play with a midi controller and be as delicate with the dynamics as you can manage to be.

Ooo, track 2 I really like, it reminds me of this:

Mix wise I think I want more breadth of space. I've been playing around with DearVR Micro (which can be had for free) to position things in space laterally.

For things far away, there should be less delay between the reverb and the sound, and the mix should be wetter. For things closer, the mix should be drier with a longer delay between the sound and the reverb attack.

I've been using a send delay to emulate this lately, and I didn't even do it on my submission.

This is some really stellar work, I hope my feedback helps you take it to that next level of polish. I'm really glad you joined.

Oh, and you DEFINITELY won't want to miss this next OST Jam. I have that theme planned, you're going to have a blast with it.

Phenomenal work, excellently done.

Thanks for the detailed feedback KaleOverlord, love that Boyar's Chorus piece, haven't heard it before.

Getting the reverbs to work well in orchestral mock-ups is always a challenge for me. Lately I've been using three different VVV presets for short, mid and long with different predelays and lengths and I also use a lot of T-Verb. I haven't tried Dear VR, I didn't really know what it did but if it's for imaging with orchestral instruments I should give it a go, thanks!

Really looking forward to the next one! Awesome work putting this together and running it btw, what a great community.

This was so well orchestrated and mixed.  Top notch stuff.  Complex harmonies and driving motivic rhythms keep this moving and surprising.  Hard to find something constructive here, it's very well done.

Flawless execution, where the only thing I objected to was it was -too- obviously kinda like Lord of the Rings.

But it's a nice problem to have.  Excellent.

Thanks and fair point haha. Particularly that rhythm in Main Theme is a bit LOTR.

Well excecuted, nice orchestral dynamics, only the main theme I think was lacking a bit some low end but you got it on The Great Hall.
