Did you work in a team?
Elliot (pawprints): programming and art
Michael (MRKL): music and sound effects
Was the resolution a challenge?
Elliot: Fitting all of the action in the background while keeping the notes legible and a smooth experience was quite challenging. I also had to take care to avoid sub pixels by rounding all texture coordinates to integers.
What did you learn?
Elliot: I learned how to make a music game (and how difficult it is!) while being more ambitious with my art and animation.
Michael: I learned more about blending chiptune instruments with acoustic instruments.

Well, I don’t play a lot of rythm games, but the mechanics were very unique ! 2nd level was insane ! Pretty good game .
What is this a remake of?
Anyway, what an awesome game! The sprites are adorable. The music worked perfect. I've played a lot of rhythm games where you can't tell what groove you should be following, that was not an issue with Chiptari Woman at all. My one complaint is I thought it was too easy, but it's a game jam; I figure you'd have different difficulties if there had been time. 5/5/5/5
So good. I suck at rhythm games, but I picked this game up really easily. I want more. More of this music, more of this game. You both really nailed this.
Oh ! I loose, I loose, I loose all the time but I keep playing ! It's great an all account ! Fantastic game !

Very fun, couldn't win haha. Everything was very solid and clear to understand. Well done! What sorts of challenges did you face when making a rhythm game btw? Always wanted to give it a shot
Oh man what a great question! I could write an entire blog post on it. Maybe I will.
My biggest learnings were:
- Use the audio file as your single source of truth. Animate everything else based on the position of the audio file. That way you’re guaranteed to keep everything in sync.
- Use MIDI files to store note plans. It requires setting up a conversion script/pipeline but makes writing and editing the level design really straightforward. I was even able to adapt MRKL’s original midi files directly.
- Give players as much feedback as possible whether they get a note wrong or right. I was surprised how much of a difference it made when I added the “great/good/ok/miss” graphic.
- I never did work out how to make the graphics “dance” to the beat, like New Super Mario Bros. That would be cool.
Very neat idea, very original, great concept. I found the game a little difficult to get a grasp of and am still very confused about what to do when just little blips with no line come at you? mashing space cycled through "miss, good, great" when that would happen which im not sure if that was intended or not.
