Did you work in a team?
No, the game was made completely by me. It was fun! :D
Was the resolution a challenge?
I struggled a lot with coming up with a game idea that works well on such a low resolution. In the end, I decided to go with a grid-based approach for simplicity, as it's easier to work in that kind of game space for me. I figured a puzzle game was the way to go, and things slowly fell into place from there (pun intended---Dug Pug takes heavy inspiration from Tetris!)
What did you learn?
Dug Pug is my second game I've made in Godot, and the second game jam game I've made with Godot. Although I have a lot of programming experience, using a new program is always a challenge! I learned a lot about getting sprites from a sprite sheet, creating game music, dynamically creating objects, and so much more from this jam. I even found a way to sync up the music with the gameplay, which I pulled together at the last minute! I think that this experiment will put me in a good place for future game jams, as I've learned a lot more about how Godot operates. Next time, I'll be even faster and more skilled when I start!

the twist is very refreshing to the tetris formula, it just lacks difficulty curve. nice music, good game!
This was pretty fun.
It did get a little boring after a while though - it wasn't very challenging, and it didn't seem to get any more difficult over time.
Sometimes when moving around it could be confusing when a block dropped - some kind of feedback when clearing blocks or taking a hit would have improved this, and also made playing more satisfying.
The flashing tiles were also a little confusing to me. Something more solid, and with a better indication of when the block was going to drop would have been nice.
Oh and a button to drop bones early would have been nice.
The music was also kind of repetitive after a while.
This twist on Tetris is done well, I had fun playing it.
Thanks! It took quite a while to figure out what exactly I wanted to do with it, all I knew is I wanted to make a game about weird-shaped bones.
Nice game concept and I think it works well for the resolution. I had fun playing it but got confused a few times by the shapes changing into different shapes when I moved them around. Overall, a success, well done!
Was it the rotation that was throwing you off? I had some troubles getting that to work properly and it might not be perfect.
I just went back and checked to make sure I wasn't imagining it. Sometimes the shapes change while you move them around. I had a shape that was a column of 4 and a column of 2. After moving it around a little, it became a single column of 4. It threw me a few times on my first play through (but ultimately makes the game easier because the shapes always seem to simplify). Hope that helps!
Interesting, I haven't seen that before. If you or someone else were able to record it happening, that'd be super helpful in helping me to fix it.
I think what was happening is that I was losing a life without noticing and the current piece was getting swapped out for a new piece.
Nice game! Looks really good. I think it lacks visual feedback - when I loose points, when I clear a row, when the timer fires etc. Some sounds would be nice too. The core is solid though.
I 100% agree, I was just a bit low on time so some of the polish ended up getting left out. Still happy with how much I was able to do despite work getting in the way!
I liked the concept and how it played, it felt like an interesting take on Tetris-type games. It would have been interesting to have a visual timer, like maybe a shadow that gets larger on the ground the less time you have to place the bone! The music was also very cute!
I like that shadow idea, I'll try my hand at implementing it when I get the chance!
Pretty cool little game! I hade fun trying to top my score :)
Happy to hear it!
Fun little game. I pretty much agree with the entirety of minichibi's post. Perhaps you could decrease the time you have to place the pieces as your score increases to ramp up the difficulty.
Thanks! I'll have to tweak things after the voting period, right now the difficulty ramps up a bit after 25 lines cleared but that's probably too long.
Took me two short fails to understand what I had to do. Once done, I can say I really enjoyed this. It's a fun and nice brain training. I also enjoy this creative context about dogs and bones. Well done for a 2nd jam entry with Godot!
Thanks! It's definitely better than my previous game jam game: Not only was I too ambitious, but it wasn't really finished, either. I'm happy with how this one turned out!
Indeed, you can be proud of yourself! Keep up! ^^
The tutorial screen was very clever. I liked the way bones broke when clearing a line, although some visual or auditory flair upon the line itself breaking (or any other player action) would have gone a long way in making the game satisfying. There was a certain lack of escalation in challenge. It was neat how the actual gameplay fit into a 48x space, with the rest being used for UI.
I had fun with the way the bones broke down after clearing a line. I did have a system that after 25 lines cleared, the game would get faster, but looking back that number should have been reduced. As for the UI space, that was actually a recommendation from a friend, and I think it worked out well!
Had fun playing your game! I really like the visuals with the dogs on the side lol.
Thank you! :)
