Thank you ! Oh really ? I made this thinking of the life and the obstacles in it, so there are some moments more "energic" than other

Glad you like the mechanic :D

that's normal, everyone has different taste and that's a good thing ;)

This game was fun. Unfortunately the extremely slow beginning stopped me from retrying too many times, but I see that's already being addressed. Good work.

I really, really enjoyed the art and the concept as well. The one thing I don't like is how slow the start is which hurts replayability so I'm glad that you've already decided to add checkpoints.

Developer

Thanks ! Yeah you totally right with the replayability thing, just a day and I can add checkpoints :D

Very cool concept! The beginning is a bit too long, but then things get exciting in a hurry. I am unfortunately not skilled enough to advance far, but I like what you've done here. Great work!

Developer

Thank you ! Yeah, the beginning is basically a tutorial to learn to play and to understand the story.

When the ratings end, I will add checkpoints so everyone can play til the end :D

After an additional five attempts I had to hand in my pro gamer card halfway through chapter 5. But I gotta say - fantastic job with the minimalist approach to narrative and art, I look forward to a checkpoint system after the jam so I can go back and see the ending!

Developer(+1)

Thanks ! I've already add checkpoint, just wait til the end of the jam to update it on itch.io ;)

This game was really fun. I like that the the gameplay kind of drove the story more than anything and the text was short.  It was a nice change of pace after playing some dialogue heavy games right before (not that those weren't great too!).  The shining aspect of me for your game though was the main mechanic.  Very unique and an interesting way to setup some cool puzzles.  I would recommend in the future not binding the escape key to anything for a webgl build as it minimizes the screen and can break the immersion of the game.  I didn't do any pausing and it had zero effect on my enjoyment of your game, but just thought it was worth mentioning.  I'm gonna definitely have to agree with some of the others on the checkpoint thing.  It was pretty frustrating having to go back to the very beginning of the game. Especially considering the first chapter you are a slow baby and old man.  Other than that though your game was great.  Good job!

Developer(+1)

Thanks ! It was my goal to make a story with few words !

Thanks for the advice, I didn't think about the escape key but I'll be more careful in the future ;)

Totally understandable, it's great to have comments who tell me the checkpoint issue, because without them, I would never realized the issue.

The main mechanic is very interesting and unique for the jam, very creative! The gameplay got a bit repetitive due to the very slow beginning and for not having checkpoints. Apart from that, I enjoyed my experience with the game and you found a game to tell a story though gameplay which not everyone is able to do. Congratulations :)

Developer(+1)

Thanks ! Yeah it was my goal to this jam, to use gameplay to tell a story.

A lot of people tell me about the frustration with no checkpoint and I think you're right xD

So, I just put down Daemon X Machina because it kept with it's "Time is coming for you" narrative; and I didn't need that energy right now.
Then I run this game, also trying to give me an existential crisis. Games are trying to make me go outside today.

The silhouette art is very nice and the swapping between sides was fun and interesting. It reminded me a lot of this one game my professor showed me once where you walk through life getting older. And you can end up getting a girlfriend and then life becomes more interesting as you maneuver two people through it as a dark mass slowly engulfs you.

Really well done!

Thank you ! Yeah I got inspired by this game, Passage I think.

I'm happy you liked it !

This was very cool! The shadow art style fit really well, and each of the characters was well-designed, along with the transitions with each chapter. The pacing of the text was good too, like towards the beginning when the baby is way ahead of the old man, and it says "one cannot live without the other". Very nice concept :)

Thank you ! Glad you liked it !

This is such a cool concept, and really on-theme! I would have liked to see more story - telling us what the characters were going through in their joint lives, or how they feel about being tied to each others lives this way would have provided a really interesting new dimension to the game.

I really enjoyed the gameplay - it was great fun figuring out how to get past the obstacles, although like a lot of others I really struggled with the spikes and could've used a save point, or the opportunity to practice getting past them earlier on.

AND THE GRAPHICS - amazing! I was watching your progress on the Discord and wondering what kind of game you were making. The end result is fantastic! The music was also on point.

Developer

Thanks ! Infact, it I had more time, I wanted to add different kind of visuals for the obstacles, to show what the characters are going through in their lives.

I actually struggle a lot to find what to do, my first idea was very different and I had struggle to find what kind of visuals to do !

Pros

  • Absolutely stunning visuals! I loved the art style! I'm amazed by them!
  • Very fitting and interesting music! Now I got the main song stuck in my head!
  • Great use of the magical realism theme. Although you were inspired by a film, you managed to create a very interesting and unique story.
  • The way the story is told is very interesting and it pushes you to keep moving forward to learn more about the plot.

Cons

  • As others have probable mentioned it, losing and being sent back to the very beginning can be quite frustrating. A checkpoint before the spikes would have been a great addition. I understand that this was intentional because of the metaphor of  a life ending and a new one beginning; however, this might deter some players from keeping to play.  The vision and original intention of a dev is important, but sometimes we have no choice but to give up on certain concepts because they end up affecting the reception and the playability of our projects (happens to me all the time).

Overall: an amazing work, with absolutely beautiful visuals, a really engaging plot and a great implementation of the magical realism theme. Yes, a bit frustrating at times, but still, you did a great job and you should be proud of yourself and your fantastic work!

Developer(+1)

Thank you ! I totally understand the frustration, maybe I could have add the possibility to play with or without checkpoints

I really liked the concept and the art direction, the music was also very nice! I did find it quite frustrating being bounced all the way back to the beginning after dying and must admit I haven't gotten past the point where the spikes start to show up. All in all I really appreciate the gameplay concept with the characters properties changing as they age or deage. All in all fantastic effort

Developer

Thank you ! Yeah I can understand, I made that choice because I wanted the gameplay to match the story, so when a life end, a new one start again.
