Super strong entry for me! Great logo. Great color palette. Easy to understand mechanics. Full options screen and credits screen. Just a dang-great jam game. Your hard work paid off. You can just see the attention of detail oozing out of the pixels.
The audio in this game can feel grating after a while. I appreciate the attempt to mimic actual pig squeals, but the metallic side of the noise channel is entirely too harsh for how often the sound triggers. The gameplay is proper NES frustrating and a bit too arcadey for my tastes. Graphics are overall very cute, though, especially the pigs!
cute game. the music seems pretty harsh for the overall vibe but well, i donβt know what happens inside that house.. maybe itβs fitting ><
the real speed strat is to go diagonal! felt like a neat discovery. lovely game overall that could benefit from some variety, perhaps different kinds of animals that need to be outsmarted in different ways?
Thank you for the feedback! I just now realized that the music is slowed down in the browser. Anyway, there is no canon on what happens to the pigs that are brought inside, it's up to the player's imagination π
I LIKE this game. This could easily be one of those NES titles you would find on the shelf. It must have been a pain in the butt to code those piglets, given how evasive they are.
A few thoughts you are welcome to ignore:
- Any thoughts to a timer for catching the pigs? Maybe a generous one plus a bonus for each pig to help you get motivated to capturing them?
- What about obstacles in the pen? Feeding stations, ponds, rocks, maybe a chicken that would peck at you and cause the player to fall down during a chase?
This is some real good stuff! Keep up the excellent work.
Thank you for the feedback! The pig AI was a bit complex to code, but to be honest I had way more issues with simpler things π
About your suggestions, the very next thing in my ToDo list was adding the timer, around 1 minute for each level. Ironically, I ran out of time to implement it. Adding more time for each pig caught is a good idea maybe for later levels, with less time at the start.
Adding a chicken that would chase and peck the farmer was another thing farther down the ToDo list, it even made it to the title screen π. Another obstacle that's in the game sprites are patches of muddy soil which would have made it harder to stop or start running. Having some rocks or fences making paths would be great and easier to code too. I can see them used mainly near the corners where pigs usually get trapped, as coming from one side would make it easier for them to escape.
Really cool game
Love the pig sounds! It really felt like NES sound design. Really well done making everything feel authentic NES style!
It was a fun little game. Took me a minute to figure out the A button, so you'll see me running around for a minute before I figured it out haha
Thank you for the feedback and the video!
I beat the 3 levels. I think the game is well-rounded and dynamic, it's fun to run after these cute pigs.
Not sure such a game could work on an NES though :)
Thank you for your feedback! Why wouldn't it work? I actually coded it in assembly for the 6502 processor and compiled it with NESASM3. Even though I don't own a real NES with an everdrive, it works on a couple of emulators, so I think there should be no problem in real hardware.
By the way, if someone owns an NES with everdrive and can play it there, please let me know how it goes π
Oh I'm sorry, this was just a joke because I think it's very cool that you made an actual NES game.
I thought I might have missed something, it's my first NES game after all π
Really like the game and itch page looks really nice. I would have preferred to just press the button instead of holding the button to catch the pigs but it's a fun idea. Played level 3 twice before i realized it keeps repeating.
Tt's fun for a few minutes, has good graphics and its polished over all.
This game is gorgeous!
