Description
The Winds of Murder is an adventure/mystery game that takes place in a strange seaside town that doesn't seem to exist in our universe but has familiar features reminiscent of various Earth mythologies. The player belongs to a cult that controls this town and must solve the murder of one of the cult's most distinguished members.

I started with a piano plugin in order to come up with a theme that would invoke the sense of mystery and melancholy.

After composing the basic theme I set out to create a track that would represent the wintery beginning half of the game (Boreas) and then the warm, stormy summer season of the second half (Notus)

Boreas is an ambient track with muted wind sounds, piano and cold synthesizer pads. I used Spitfire LABS Soft Piano and Arturias CS80V3. There are also field recordings which I manipulated with pitch, reverb and eq to give the song the feeling of a journey.

Notus is a more raucous and upbeat rock track. I played electric guitar for the rhythm and lead through Guitar Rig along with one of Logic's stock drumsets as well as one of Logics stock bass guitar synths. In addition to that, it has the same piano plugin as Boreas.

Both tracks have the same chord progressions and lead in order to tie them together while they are composed with completely different instrumentation in order to define the two seasons that the game takes place in.

Everything was composed in Logic Pro X and was mastered using eMastered.

Message from the artist:
Thank you for listening, and I hope you enjoy!

Theme:

Story of Seasons

How does it fit the theme?
Boreas was composed to communicate the muted, cold softness of winter. It is quiet, and features field recorded wind and chilly synth pads.

Notus was composed to reflect warm, tempestuous summer storms. Rock is a warmer genre often times and the track also features the sounds of ocean waves (created with white noise), to communicate the night time, summer beach vibe.

Notus is a banger! I can imagine the rolling clouds and heat lightning of a summer storm.

Boreas: Amazing textures! I never knew where the piece was going and I loved every second of it. The build to the climax is really satisfying. It's surprisingly hard to make good-sounding drones like this. Great job!

Notus: The ambient sound effects provide a great bridge between the first track and this one. Love the progression and guitar work. I got some nice Radiohead vibes from it. This track also has a great climax.

Great submission overall!

More detailed feedback! I love it, thank you! This game jam is probably one of my favorite so far for all the back and forth we're all having.

Radiohead vibes, hell yeah!

Thanks so much man!

LOVE the track Notus

the environmental sounds like the waves really made the song very immersive and memorable

Developer

I'm grateful that theres people who liked Notus, its not my usual style of composition so its awesome to get love for that one

Immersive sound design AND a rockin instrumental section. Hats off to you! During the second song I imagine the detective explaining how he solved it. "He hid is footprints in the fresh snow but I found their traces in the earth below after it melted!"

Developer

Thank you! :D  Love the detective quote!

I really liked the chord progression you used: it created such a cool vibe. Nice contrast between the two tracks with instrumentation, but definitely feel the connection. The background waves and atmospheric reverb really capture a unique occultic kind of vibe: awesome!

Developer

Thanks! I'm stoked that you got the vibe of the occult! Excellent!

THE IMMERSION IS AMAZING I'M BLOWN AWAY I CAN LITERALLY FEEL THE WINDS BLOWING ON MY FACE or maybe it's the fan above my head BUT STILL

This is amazing! The composition is great, and the ambient sounds really tie it all together

Thanks! I'm going to listen to your score next, I noticed it wa getting a lot of positive feedback, can't wait to hear it ๐Ÿ˜€

Boreas makes me feel like I'm inside a warm insulated cabin and the cold weather outside wants me dead, As long as I stay inside I have nothing to fear. There's a sense of grandeur in that chord progression, I really dig it. I also like the fact that you integrated sound design elements with the waves and all, tweaking samples of a Honda Civic to make it sound like wind was smart ;).

Developer

Hey thanks for that detailed response, that's awesome. You felt exactly what I was going for with the sound design and the wind! I'm glad it was successful ๐Ÿ˜€

Thanks for listening and commenting!

Excellent synth work! Sounds like if the Hyper Light Drifter OST was done with analog synths. I'm all about Boreas, and composing two tracks with same chord progression but totally different instrumentation is a great idea too.

Damn! A comparison to Disasterpiece? I'm gonna have to do these jams more often, you're way too kind ๐Ÿ˜„

๐Ÿ˜‚ I super appreciate such high praise! Spacing out that comment really got me ๐Ÿ˜„

Boreas feels like i'm listening to an unreleased from Vangelis's Blade Runner
And Notus is like a Blue Oyster Cult track

I kinda want to play the game now x)

Developer(+1)

Oh wow, any hint of a comparison to Vangelis and is about as good as it gets. Thank you! I definitley use Arturia's software clone of the CS80 all the time. And it's solely because of my love for the Blade Runner score ๐Ÿ˜

Thanks again, I'm humbled!

The description of the game was really a confirmation ^^
it's well deserved :)

Good tone and would make a great BGM for a game! Especially liked Boreas with the wind sounds and ambience

Developer

Thank you!

I had a lot of fun recording my cars air conditioning vent and then processing it to make it sound like a chilly wind ๐Ÿ˜„

Really solid sounds from both tracks that could easily be in a video game - especially loved when Notus really kicked in mid-way through.

Developer

Thanks for taking the time to listen and pointing out a particular moment in the song. Much appreciated!

I really like the tone and atmosphere you created in Borea, it's also strengthened by your description

Developer

Thank you!

I enjoyed listening to both tracks and I liked how they develop. Although they are a bit lighter in tone than I expected after reading your description :) Interesting stuff anyway!

Developer

Thank you for listening and commenting, much appteciated! I can see where you're coming from regarding the tone being lighter than the game description too, definitley a valid point.
