Description
" The world is not as it once was, darkness and decay has destroyed a once vibrant land, all that remains of the old world are the foggy memories within the mind of a dying creature known as the Envisage. As one of the few wanderers still left in this desolate place, you must enter and help recover the memories of the Envisage lest the old world of Gaios be lost forever."

Envisage : Memories of Gaios is a first person fantasy adventure game developed early in the PlayStation 2's life cycle by a now defunct game studio.

Shortly after bugged early copies of the game were sent to a small handful of reviewers, an unverified crime was committed amongst leadership within the company, due to the already failing state of the company, this caused an immediate liquidation and cancelation of all current projects from the studio, a final fixed version of Envisage was never released.

No copies of the game are currently in circulation and no gameplay footage has ever been uploaded, luckily a few screenshots and part of the game's soundtrack have been found and now archived here.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This OST is for a cerebral fantasy adventure game, loosely in the style of Zelda, Ico, Okami, etc. featuring lush orchestral MIDI instruments mixed with the occasional synth sounds.

I initially started with a simple, Disney ballad-esque, melody hummed while first reading the jam prompt. I brought in Sojioto, a great developer and longtime Itch collaborator, to write a concept for a game with distinct levels that I could compose to. Sojioto imagined a game in which the player encounters a magical creature in a barren desert who asks him/her/them to enter its mind to retrieve the lost memories of a once rich and beautiful world.

Working off of a title and description of each level written by Sojioto, I composed a song for each of these memories meant to reflect the style of the location within the creature's mind-world.

All tracks are designed to be loopable in-game, except for the Crystal Heads Glitch.

All compositions are original, without pre-made samples or loops. Made in Reaper.

Memories/Locations:

Memory of the Endless coast

The endless coast is the first location the wanderer arrives at, a long scenic coastline that extends endlessly, using clever programming similar to the stairs in mario 64. the player must first find the shovel and map items, allowing them to dig up the first artifact.

Memory of the giant stone woman

A massive snow capped mountain, the path to the top is narrow and winding, along the way there is many stone carvings and structures carved into the face of the mountain, depicting lore of the world, many traps and puzzles block the players path, the solution to the puzzles are carved into walls nearby. early on one of these puzzles rewards the wanderer with a carved stone head, with a handle on top, the heads eyes glow brightly acting as a flashlight/torch, allowing sight in dark areas in addtion to helping solve puzzles. at the top of the mountain sits a massive giant of a woman, she is covered in snow, a small camp fire infront of her is lightly smoking, nearby is a set of stone working tools, among them is the next artifact, a golden mask.

Memory of flowing fire temple

a large temple, inspried by bhuddist design, painted brilliant gold and red, the halls are wandered by silent monks wearing golden masks and flowing red robes, if a monk sees a player they will cast terrifying fire magic at them, the wanderer must find a route past them using stealth and secret passages. At the center of the temple sits a massive golden stature of a deity, several dead monks lie on the ground, in the center of the a slumped over warrior, now dead, his broken sword lies on the ground nearby, this is the next artifact.

Memory of sands of glass
The sands of glass in a large geometric maze in the center of a desert, made up of large shards of glimmering glass, the ground sparkles as if made up of glass dust. This area has many invisible bridges, doors, and puzzles involving reflecting light.
The player must use a shard of mirror to reflect light in this memory.

Memory of broken ships

In the center of a rough ocean lies a boneyard of ships, hundred of vessels smashed together like an artifical island, this area is a tangled maze small passages, percarious walkways, and strange sea beasts and deranged sailors. There are very few puzzles in this area and as it focuses more on combat and environmental dangers.

Memory of Crystal heads

Information on this final memory is extremely scarce, due to a game breaking bug in the sands of glass area, that hard locks progression, no footage of this memory has been found, and likely never will be, as the only copies of the game in existance are early review copies, that contain the bug.

Message from the artist
We are pretending this was a game that was actually made, but never released, for the PS2 in 2002 that was lost, forgotten, and unearthed by us. We even added a fake review! It also features a "broken" song representing a level with the game-breaking glitch that caused the studio to pull the plug on the release.

CHECK OUT THE GAME'S ITCH PAGE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE "LOST PS2 GAME". INCLUDES IMAGINARY "REVIEW"!

Theme

Inside my world

How does it fit the theme?
Each song represents a memory of a magical creature stranded in the desert. At the beginning of the game, it asks the player to go inside of its mind and retrieve the lost memories of a once rich and beautiful world. Each of these memories would be a separate level of the game.

So... it was one of the most amazing sets of effects of this jam, heh)

I like the buggy effects and the feeling of being "broken"... cool!

Thanks)

Developer

Wow, that's a big compliment thank you!! The broken game aspect was my collaborator, Sojioto's idea. We thought it'd be a fun twist on the jam concept!

Such a vibrant soundtrack with so many interesting textures!

Developer

thank you!

Very cool glitchy effect in a lot of the songs that made it stand out!

Developer

thank you for noticing! I certainly was heavy-handed with it on the last track haha, but I tried to be a lot more subtle with it in the others.

Sand of Glass...THOSE bells...amazing!

You soundtrack is SUPER creative! I love how even though you used many different timbres, all your work is very cohesive. And that is a great achievement!

I enjoyed a lot throughout the entire ost. Excellent job!!

Thank you for listening! Having all of these different realms in the world written by my collaborator, Sojioto, gave me a lot of ideas to play with when trying to create music in different styles. It really helped the songwriting process.

Interesting choice of voicings in this! Sands of Glass is very sparkly sounding.

1000 Broken Ships feels a little more typical, and I have to say I dig it. The strange synths toward the end remind me of something Yuzo Koshiro would do sound design-wise.

The primary instrument in Journey of the Stone Woman's Design reminds me of bagpipes and that might be one of the rarest sounds I've heard in the jam, haha. It works well though, I like how this one in particular progresses.

The Lost Level has some really interesting concepts, I like how blown out the distorted growls are and how the latter end of it feels like a synth-line ran through a tone of various different modulators.

All in all, interesting work. I think there are some cool ideas in here. Best of luck!

Developer

Thanks! I'm glad you found the bagpipes unique. That was definitely the sound I was going for. Having a lot of imagery to work really helped me come up with musical ideas. I appreciate the nod to Yuzo Koshiro as well! For the lost level I was really trying to make it sound like the game bugged out mid-level. I appreciate the detailed feedback!

I must say, very original sound you have here! Lots of variety and sounds. Each track has a unique feel and you nailed what you were going for. Cool artwork and great work!

This is a super fun OST and overall entry. The nod to Ico in the cover art is appreciated.

Props to you for the creativity! I really like how you managed to make each track stand out while still remaining within the context of the story.

Pretty cool! I like the story you made

Developer

Thank you for listening!

Wow, each track is so unique, but also very cohesive with the imagined game, lore, and other tracks. I really liked the whole idea behind this collection, you even went as far as to have a glitchy track to replicate the feeling. Nice submission!

Developer

Thank you! It helped a lot to have such a rich world created by the game's story writer, Sojioto. It gave me a lot of ideas to play with musically.
