  • This was a very fun game, the physic based game play was a very nice choice for this game. I really liked that you could spin the blade, move around really fast and make objects fly around if hit correctly. The game didn't seem to get much harder after a certain point, just more boxes were added. Having to go back and heal in the the shrine was a nice mechanic, it made it so I couldn't just swing around forever and gave me something i needed to protect.

Summarise your game!
UNSHEATHED is a casual combat game with physics based swordplay. You play as a sword "Kaito" and must defend your shrine from approaching monsters. You need to return to the shrine to regen your health, else shatter.

Please explain how your game fits the theme:
In UNSHEATHED you play as a sword... a weapon... THE weapon; therefore, it fits the theme fairly well.

Is there anything you'd like the judges to pay particular attention to?
Ignore most of the graphics but pay attention to the relaxing flow you begin to enter after playing for a while. It starts to become a satisfying loop of tasks to keep up your score!

Nice little game you've got here. Short and simple, but yet it's still engaging and fun. Swinging the sword feels quite good too, while making them fly across the screen without killing it is not exactly what should happens (I thought), it nevertheless is so funny to see. I also like the fact that you need to put yourself back into the shrine once in a while, and it really adds to those split decision or whether risk it and fight or recover some health. Nice idea.

So for a bit of constructive criticism, I'd say the game doesn't change difficulty or adding new stuffs over time is a huge bummer, and will just created infinitely long runs which is not ideal. Another big issues is that it doesn't feel like there is any penalty when the enemies hit the shrine. There is good visual effects alright and I really expect it to break after a few hits, maybe it's a bug or lack of time to implement? I don't know.

Anyway, I'd say this is quite a nice game and you've done a great job! Keep up the good work!

BTW here's my causal score first playthrough

Developer

Thanks for playing! Time limitations forced me to cut a planned "wave system" and ending which would've made the game a bit more concise. The shrine does break after a while, but has like 25 health or something (should've lowered it). If I ever come back to it, I'll probably include all your points here. Also, I'll add your high score to the leaderboard!

Wow, there's a lot I like about this. The aesthetic and feel of it, in general, are awesome. The pixel art is beautiful, and the music slaps.

It was a bit confusing at first, but then I realized the altar in the middle and everything clicked. Controlling the sword feels pretty satisfying as well.

One thing I'll say is that the graphics, the sound effects, and especially the way that the sword looks as it moves around reminded me a LOT of Castlevania Symphony of the Night, so it felt very cool for me.

I really liked this. It gave me a sense of nostalgia. Very well done!

Fun arcade game. I like the art a lot and all the SFX it looks really nice! Music was groovy so nice job on that. We love a thicc bass line. I would probably see about letting the player know you can sheathe the sword to recover health? Also I think just a health bar in general would help distinguish when the player is getting hurt. I didn't realize I had health and thought the shrine had been destroyed.

Good job! Keep workin' on it!

One of my biggest regrets was not making a tutorial. Wanted to go for hands-off kinda gameplay that was simple enough to understand instantly, but I ran out of time to think up better ways of implementing the health system. Anyways, thanks for playing!

I like the sword movement when spinning mouse in circles. I would just add little pop up about how to recharge the sword somewhere inside the game

Developer

My biggest regret is the lack of instructions. Thanks for playing though!

Cute sword game! I like the simple gameplay and  the recharging mechanic to stay alive! Fun game!

Good job !

Enjoyed playing around with this one! I enjoyed how the sword moves and how it interacts with the enemies. Got a good laugh out of me when I flung one of the slimes at mach 20.  If I had to give some constructive criticism, I didn't really understand the damage to the sword and how to prevent it if you even can. Some indicators for health would help alot.

Good job on your game! Seems like there could be a lot of potential for a mobile release? could be something to consider.

Developer

Glad the physics engine humored you! I also really wish I had saved time to make a tutorial or changed up how the health system works. Basically, the four sparkles orbiting your sword are your health. They fizzle out over time, and you must re-enter the shrine to regenerate. It's not conveyed well at all so I apologize. As for mobile, it technically already works! I tried it on my phone today and its almost entirely playable.

this game is awesome! i really like its graphics and sound design. i had a lot of fun whacking things with the sword lol. eventually, the sword got stuck in the shrine but it was still wonderful  :) It says there's no ending yet, I'm really curious to see what an ending for this type of game would be :P

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! Sorry you got stuck, I had some problems with Godot's physics engine and ran out of time to iron them out. As for the ending, I originally planned a short story with cutscenes and dialogue, fit with a tutorial at the start. But you know how deadlines are. If you're really curious, it'd probably end with some important guy pulling the sword from the stone like King Arthur or Link.

that's cool! i wonder how they'd react after finding out it can fly and also explodes shortly after being removed lol. and yeah, deadlines can be rough 😔. still, i think what you have is awesome :)
