Title
The Legend of the Final Ring

Using the background image, I thought about my favorite fantasy content and went with the flow. I didn't find the jam until the last 48 hours but was able to make something I'm happy with.

AH, I really see the final fantasy reference there

Developer

lol I tried to be subtle about it :D

2 issues I had with your song:

1. Mixing. The first part was audibly clipping. To fix that, instead of making each instrument you add louder, make everything else more quiet, and leave around 3-6db headroom for mixing later on.

2. Just as other people pointed out, the melody sometimes just doesn't go anywhere. You'll definetly improve on it as time goes on, but I recommend looking into period form and sentence form for better melodies.

Developer

Thanks for sharing the issues and the details on how to fix them! I've got some music theory knowledge and typically follow the period form naturally but I'll look into the sentence form, the name doesn't ring a bell.

I really tried to embrace the "no repeating patterns" challenge and brought it into the melodies - true, there are a couple points where it gets lost because of this.

Mixing is a very weak point of mine, I'm still pretty new to producing and I tend to wear multiple hats so I don't always dive as deep into topics as I'd like to - jack of all trades, master of none lol thanks for the pointers here, I'll work on leveling up my mixing - much appreciated!

I like the orchestral approach, you did well, but let me give you my two cents about what you can improve:

  • In my opinion, the melody played by the plucks in the beginning does not seem to "go" a certain direction, it doesn't feel like it comes to a conclusion, or resolve;
  • This one is optional, but I see you've used sounds from FLEX. While FLEX is a pretty good plugin, it is still a synthesizer, and because orchestral instruments are real acoustic instruments, they are going to sound better if you use sounds of the real instruments, recorded. Most samplers, especially orchestral, are quite expensive, but there are free options such as BBC SO Discover, which I like, and I use it pretty often.

I really enjoyed your music! Looking forward to seeing you in upcoming competitions!

Thanks for the constructive feedback! Yeah the melody drops off a little, I went hard in the "avoid repeating" lol

I'm still navigating and learning about FL studio (only used LMMS prior), plugins, mixing - producing in general :D I agree, there's that synthy sound that I tried to negate with some filters, but they only do so much. Thanks for pointing out the free option! I'll give it a try!

I appreciate the kind words, looking forward to more of your music in the upcoming jams, too!

I can tell you had a lot of fun composing your music!

4 parts that work well together.

My favorite is the second one with the woodwinds.

I really liked it and it's a real journey you've taken us on. On the other hand, I had the impression that the melody sometimes got lost in the modulations. Some dissonances that seem strange to me. But that's just my opinion.

Developer

Yes, this one was a blast! New instruments, progression challenge and a great theme :)

I like the woodwinds section a lot too - when I got that part mostly together, that's when I thought I could make something worthy of entering here :D

Yes, the melody gets a bit lost, was trying my best to embrace the "no repeating" as much as I could, this likely led to those dissonances, too.

I appreciate the feedback and the kind words!

Thank you!!

I really like that the sections are very different from each other, expressing a wide range of moods but staying in the same world, the changes are really smooth. I find some sounds a bit dry, like the piano in the central part, which could use some saturation and reverb, but I think that it was not easy to get to this level of detail in just 48 hours, so well done!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for listening, I'm glad you enjoyed it and I appreciate the kind words!

Ah - yeah, I thought the piano was a bit lacking too, I kept trying to get it right but I ran out of time. Thanks for the suggestions, I'm going to go back with this one and make some updates thanks to all the great feedback I'm getting. I'll mess with the reverb/saturation and see if that can help out!

I'm impressed at how well you work in key changes and other modes...it sounds so natural you did a great job with the challenge piece!

Developer

Thank you so much! I really tried to embrace the challenge and make each section part of the story, something I really haven't tried to do yet. I usually make music as an accompany to our games, but trying to tell a story within a track was a fun challenge and I feel like I've grown from it. I know enough music theory to get me through, but unfortunately not at the level to REALLY understand the mode differences - I tried to go with what sounded nice and make my melodies not land on the root/five notes of the chords as the progression continued. lol didn't always work, but it was a rule of thumb.

I appreciate the listen and the feedback!

This sounds like 1980 fantasy movie, something belonging to the era of neverending story with big puppets of monsters and fairy creatures. A kind of nostalgia. Great work!

Developer

Such a wonderful compliment - thank you!

Sounds nice! The part from 1:20 with the woodwinds gives some great "fantasy town" vibes.

Developer

Thank you!! That's one of my favorite parts :)
