I like the look, feel, and the fact that there's a story at all.

The mechanics work well, there is a lot of variety in the pick ups, and the music and sound work well with the game you've made.

But...
-The harder your game is, the less you can rely on rng, because the player will feel like they were screwed over by it. My last run was won purely because of rng, not because of my own skills improving. Maybe next time you try this, create a mixture of authored and rng events. Maybe make the bombs spawn on a timer, or have them spawn based on how many enemies there are on screen, I had them spawn a bunch when there were like 1-4 enemies on screen.
-The base volume is too high, I had to crank my headphones down to the lowest setting to get it to a comfortable level.
-Some juice would have made the game feel better. The sounds were good, but some screen shake when you use a bomb, or rockets would have made it feel better to play.

All in all,
I really enjoyed it, and with a few tweaks here and there to the rng it would get over that hump from good to great.

amazing. Thanks so much for the feedback, I really appreciate you taking the time to play. I agree with the rng, it was much more random than it is now. At first I simply had the game engine pick a random pickup and spawn it.  Before the end of the Jam I grouped them into 4s and when you have collected all 4 in that group they no longer spawn. It's still probably a bit too random so something I can work on.

I might be the only one who realized this, but there was this question:

Which of the following content in your game is NOT 100% newly made for the jam?

Supposedly, for your game, the assets that was already made but not intended for the game jam is the sound/music. You even mentioned it in your page. I was a bit confused of why you didn't put that in.

Developer

Everything was newly made for the Jam. I'm not a musician or know much about sound recording so the music and sound effects were all sourced from royalty free sources during the Jam.

Found all the collectables! Really intense and fun game, but missing screen shake. I like it, good job!

Developer

Yep 100% needs screen shake. I did want to add it but ran out of time :)

Neat little arcade game. I really like the intro parts. It's pretty hard though.

Developer (1 edit)

thanks for playing, yes it's tough. I didn't even manage to beat it very often during development. But it kept making me want to try again so I thought that must be a good thing :)

Neat & fun game, good job! Introduction is well polish :)

Nostalgia galore!  What great game!  I loved the way you had characters telling you about controls and credits in the intro - unique alternative to a main menu.  The game play was really smooth and fun - a nice implement of item spawn / character collection spawn.  Very satisfying to "pew-pew" all the enemies. :)

Developer

thanks for playing.  Nostalgia was something I wanted to portray.  Glad it came through

The game has amazing art and well polished gameplay, but the best part was the music which really fitted the game. I cannot think of something that i don't like about the game. Great job!

Developer

thanks so much for the feedback. Glad you enjoyed it!

After seeing a post about this game on twitter I had to check it out. This game was a blast. The pacing of the arcade game you had to play was very smooth. The music made me feel as if I was in an arcade, lots of noise and dings. Art seems polished and high quality. I had a lot of fun playing it and ALMOST got all the collectables. The dang driver sniped me man. 10/10

Haha glad you liked it. It is a hard game. a few days ago it was even harder as I didn't add in the bomb powerup or shield until last minute.

Submitted(+1)

I definitely relied on those two power-ups! A smart choice adding those in!

Very cool gam for a jam. Really liked the retro feel. Doing the art in games myself, I'm very impressed by all the assets you've created.

Developer

Thanks, I had to make a tileset for the arcade bit and do all the other sprites foe the rest - it was sooooo time consuming. I spent way too long making the arcades look good and then realised I was nearly out of time :)

Great intro sequence! i can tell heart went into this game! It's a really fun idea and the presentation is on point! Great job! I would ask you to check out my game but you already have, so thank you for the feedback!

Developer
