Great game! I couldn't beat it because Brain Smooth but I had a lot of fun playing it! The main criticism that I have is that the AI kept putting itself in suicidal positions instead of attacking, but I see that people already mentioned that.

Developer(+1)

Thanks :)!

Yes..the AI needs a Skynet upgrade ;)!

Submitted(+1)

Nice Game but at some point it just read "oponents turn" I waited a minute nothing happened.

Developer(+1)

Thank you :)!

Yes the game is not AI bug proof unfortunately. The time was too short to make it better. I am sorry but you can restart and try another game if you wish..the bug is not always present I heard from other players.

Really cool idea. Two things that bothered me were: Pieces in spite chess-like didn't move like chess and this was really hard to learn without a tutorial for me ( it took me a lot of pieces before I got it what each piece move) second thing was AI (but I understand that game jam is not the time for super AI) They were making moves that were forcing me to kill them not trying to kill me. Don't know if this was planned but those moves just jeopardize my plan and looked like they want to die as well not to kill all my demons. Overall cool :D

Developer

Thanks for the compliments :)!
I hope it did not bother you a lot and you had still some fun ;)!?
Another reviewer mentioned that on mouse hover showing the possible moves could be a handy idea. Maybe that solves the tutorial a bit. But you are right: a tutorial would have been nice. Oh 72 hours is too short ;). Also for the master AI it was too short. I tried to let the AI think at least 1 move ahead, but it  would have been nice if it calculated more moves in advance and choose the best valued one. That would be a nice addition for an update.

Thanks again for playing and the kind words :)!

The game was super fun to play. I won the game on my first try. Then I had to play it again so I can lose. I love the art and the music really matched the theme. Nice work!

Developer

Thank you and I am happy that you had fun playing the game :D!

The linux package is broken, I can’t unzip it. Please fix it, I would like to play it and I want to support everyone who provides Linux builds.

Developer

Ok, that is not good.

I tested it with Ubuntu 20.04  and could unzip and run it after changing the x86.64 file to run as executable..

But I am not a Linux expert, just changed the Unity Build to Linux and zipped the files.

Submitted

Strange, I don’t think it is a linux problem, but rather with the zip file. But I check again, maybe the download was broken.

Developer

Thanks for trying again and please let me know if you succeeded or not..

Submitted(+1)

Yes, it works now, sorry for the confusion and thanks for the Linux support :-)

You have great graphics and I like the concept. I assume you are aware that this is basically a well-known chess variant: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Losing_chess

It is great that you did not implement it as actual chess gameplay and add own aspects like the lava fields, it reminds me that you can do so many things on the premise of chess.

I also had a bug, once the opponent thought forever and the game did not continue.

Developer (1 edit)

I am glad it did work on Linux :)!

I did wonder that something like this would probably exist for normal chess but did not do any research to confirm. And my first brainstorm idee was to make a normal chess variant to lose.. Fun to see that it is an actual real variant and popular and probably a difficult one also :D. Thanks for mentioning that and the wiki link! Great to read. (and I am glad I did change it to a bit different game with the lava & demons after all)

Yes the AI can be better and smarter and the bug sometimes occurs...not enough time unfortunately..
But I hope you still enjoyed it?!

Submitted(+1)

Absolutely!

Awesome game. Really smooth mechanics. I didn't understand the ramifications of the "must take" rule until I accidentally "won" the game and couldn't ascend.

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the kind words :)

Yes, you have to think very different than with normal chess for example..especially with the must take rule.. I hope you liked that twist in the rules :)!?

Submitted(+1)

Oh absolutely it really elevated the game from something good to something great.

Submitted(+1)

Interesting game and excellent topic choice.

I beat it at 44 moves, but I'm sure it can be made better.

It was fun. Good job!

Developer

I think you can do better also :)!

I managed, with some random AI luck ;), to do it in 24 once..

And thank you for your compliments :)

Nice to read that you had fun!

Submitted(+1)

I really liked the concept, I was a little confused at the start so maybe an in-game (not a block of text) tutorial could help.

Developer

Glad you liked it :)!
And thanks for the tip, it is a good one :)!

3 tries and 39 turns... is that a good score?

I kept getting annoyed at the angel side... do they all WANT to die? Do they want me out of heaven THAT much?

Figuring out how to kill my demons felt really nice in the end. This was a ton of fun to figure out and to play.

Developer(+1)

It is not bad ;)! I managed to do it myself in 24 once. You do have to be lucky with a bad random move of the AI to win quickly.

I am happy that you had ton of fun playing. That was one of my goals :)!

Submitted(+1)

Great work on the sound and the visuals in general.

IMO It would be easier to plan the game if we could see the potential moves when mousing over the pieces.

Developer

Thank you :)!

And that is a good tip indeed! Would gain so gameplay speed with it, thanks, I will keep that in mind for an update etc.

Submitted(+1)

Oh wow, that's really polished and fun, especially for three days. I can see this being even better with better AI, so keep developing it further!
Also, the fractal chess picture alone is super wowie haha
Well done!

Developer(+1)

Thanks :D!

Nice to read you had fun, that was the intention :)!

Yes, the AI really needs an update to make it smarter and I think it would make it more challenging also and more fun to try to beat.

I will keep it in mind. Thank you again for the feedback!

Very interesting take on chess!

Developer

Thanks :D!

I was expecting big because of the thumbnails XD, oh well I still enjoyed it tho. Good Job btw!

Developer(+1)

Haha yes the thumbnail could suggest an AAA title, but I am sorry to disappoint you.. ;)!

Glad you still enjoyed it :D!

Submitted(+1)

Woah, this game is great! The main gameplay feels polished, and the sound effects are wonderful too! The gameplay itself is really unique too - it's not really chess at all (and that's not a bad thing!), but a separate type of game entirely, and it works really well, so good work! It does get a bit tedious near the end, waiting for your opponent to chase your last pawn down, and the AI does seem to make some random pointless moves, but it's still a phenomenal game for a 72 hour jam, so very well done!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for your kind feedback :D!
I am happy that you liked it and enjoyed playing this game.

Indeed the AI can be a lot smarter... ;) and some of the moves are indeed just random. That does need some extra polish but the time was up.
But I hope it was still a little challenge in this current state.

Submitted(+1)

Amazing game.

Developer

Thank you :D!

Submitted(+1)

Even tho i knew that i should get rid of my own pieces i've tried to "win" anyway, thinking that the AI would have gone easy on me, since it was my first game.. it did not (I'm a bad at strategy games, so i wasn't expecting to getting even close to win, but still... :P)

Developer(+1)

I hope you still enjoyed trying ;)!?

Submitted(+1)

Ye, the game was still fun :)

Developer(+1)

I am glad it did :)!

Submitted(+1)

A cool concept! I think being able to move pawns backward makes it a bit less interactive as you just end up moving back and forth until your opponent makes a mistake. Still, it was a pretty fun game. Great job!

Developer (2 edits)

Thanks  :)

And you are right..the backwards can be a bit tedious. I should make the AI a bit smarter or maybe some extra randomness to avoid that. I thought of only going forwards, but if you can go sideward your pawns could get stuck on the other side of the board :). The game now thinks 1 move ahead to let you hit him etc. Wanted to increase that to make the AI smarter and the game a bit more challenging but the time ran out. Maybe I will do that if I have some time left for the next players during this jam.

Thanks again for playing and your feedback. Feedback is good to learn :)!

Submitted(+1)

Love the concept, the sound/music choices and theming. My only issue is after a handful of rounds the other opponent just never made a move and so the game soft locked.

Developer

Thank you for the positive feedback :)!

And yes the AI has still some mistakes unfortunately.. If I can I shall try to fix some for the next players of the game but I hope you still enjoyed it :)!?

Submitted(+1)

I love this concept :)

Developer

Thank you 😁

Submitted(+1)

Thats nice and I love the idea, just somtimes the IA bug an the game must be restarted :D

Developer

Thank you 😊!

And yes, the AI sometimes not so smart.. 😉
Did a minor fix.. hope it helps for the coming players.. But glad you still enjoyed it!
