The minimap is confusing!

It seems like all my dudes are useless except my Witch King.

When I select a summoning circle I get an option to make it move which doesn't make sense.

What does depleting do?

Could there be a way to select units by type? I don't play RTSs really.

What is coven territory?

It seems like my King doesn't auto-attack?

This seems cool but I'm not really an RTS guy so I guess it's not my cup of tea.

Developer (1 edit)

Hey, thanks for playing. Sorry, some of the standard RTS things are (not) yet explained in game.

When I select a summoning circle I get an option to make it move which doesn't make sense.

The command you give to the Circle is the command given to all units it spawns. Rightclicking with Circle selected will set its "Rally Point"

Could there be a way to select units by type? I don't play RTSs really.

It’s via CTRL+Leftclick a unit, though it will only select nearby units of the same type. You can also CTRL+Leftclick on a portrait in the UI and it will keep all units of that type that are in your selection. You can also CTRL-Click a Summoning Circle to select all from that Coven. This is useful for setting a Rally Point for all of them, for example.

What is coven territory?

It can be anything, is up to the map maker (me) to visualize it intuitively. (Guess I failed.) Summoning Circles are always on Coven territory.

It seems like my King doesn't auto-attack?

When just Right-Clicking on territory, all units prioritize moving there, and will only attack once they have reached their destination. Using "Attack Move" is the solution: First press A, then Leftclick on territory. Now the selected units will move to that destination, but attack all enemies on sight on their way.

The Witch King here is same as all other units, except he cannot do anything else if he is currently making an Envoy.

What does depleting do?

It sacrifices a Summoning Circle in return for temporarily spawning one extra unit for every unit spawned in that Coven.

The minimap is confusing!

The map repeats infinitely - I had a version that showed the repeat instead of dark corners, maybe that would be better?

It seems like all my dudes are useless except my Witch King.

There is a lot to discover here.

bro, the ost is fucking sexy.

one thing though, the sprite of the witch king does not really mesh well with that of the outlaws

Developer

Thanks. Ja sprites super inconsistent unfortunately, might eventually get an artist to fix it all

Still playing... I do think you should write out some text which clearly describes the game though, will make it easier for others to get into it.

Developer

The downloadable version comes with a launcher that contains a brief game guide. Have a look, if you care, and tell me what you think of it.

Been playing for over an hour, not at all sure of what I am doing, but something here is fun.  I am not entirely sure how the gameplay loop functions. Get base, build up troops, buff troops with initial buildings, get more base? I have managed to take over one settlement but then got swarmed by a bunch of blue mechs who destroyed me.

Is there some sort of resource gathering? Trees can be cut down and cars and stuff can be destroyed but I have no idea if this gives you something.

Developer

Heh, thank you for playing. You figured it out well enough, though there is some strategic nuance to discover which helps with securing more bases.

There are no numeric resources, trees and wreckage are for decoration and creating different battlegrounds. The main resource  in the game is time, in the positive sense - there is no clock ticking against the player, but units are free.

Played once through for a bit and didn't see what the ultimate goal was until the end when it mentioned taking down the enemy castle.  I'm not sure of the exact strategy I was supposed to use except wait until I have enough of the weak little guys to bum rush bigger targets and use them as meat shields for the witch king?  Since the witch king couldn't heal (from what I could see) I didn't want to risk him too much or wait too long so I just went around killing random things.

The second time through I tried creating an envoy which didn't seem worth it because they can't attack and it sacrifices 1/5th of your hp.  Might not be my kind of game unless it has a slower learning curve with less waiting for units, but I certainly see where it can go in the future with this base system!

Developer(+1)

Hey there - yep, it might not be your kind of game. But thank you for trying and giving a report!

Since the witch king couldn't heal (from what I could see) I didn't want to risk him too much or wait too long

If there is one thing I would like every player to understand, it’s that in this game there is no time pressure. Hmm

If that's the case, then I think the issue is play impatience rather than the players thinking they'll run out of time.  Have something else increase the speed at which you can generate new members of your army instead of waiting around.  Or at least something along those lines

played for about 20 or so minutes. the music is very nice, sounds like something i'd listen to while devvin'. it's very loud, though. no options menu or volume controls?

works like a proper RTS. sort of drops you in blind, but i figured it out. WASD doesn't pan camera?

pathfinding breaks over short distances. if you need to go around a river, units will simply walk using the shortest line possible to the point you drew, and will stop at the first sign of an obstacle (aka the river). this only happens if the distance you request is too great. eventually my witch king got assblasted by a tower guarded by 4 krampuses. i had the default unit limit (31), but it didn't save me. feels a bit too grindy for a game that drops you in blind. otherwise i had fun.

the mixture of 3d and 2d was off-putting though, but that's how demos go.

Developer

Thanks for playing! Camera panning is on Middle Mouse. Glad you liked the music.

(1 edit)

Game is a little confusing but the music is good! Wish it explained more.

Developer(+1)

Wait, did you play this on stream? Didn’t see it in your tier list. The downloadable version has a short game guide in the launcher, if you care. Cheers!

I will give it another go after checking out the guide so I can give it a fair review! And yes I did play it on stream :)

I liked it, really challenging and the map not having normal borders was cool.

That said I finally RQ after my 3rd attempt when i tried to send my king back to one of my bases but pathfinding decided going over the map border, through an enemy base, was the quickest way to get there and he died before I realised which felt a bit... egh.

For what it's worth on one of my attempts I got respawning enemies and an enemy outpost within attacking distance of one of my spawners.

Developer

Ayo, thanks for playing!!

I really liked it, reminds me of Brood-war, and the sprite-work's really good. The hint bar really annoyed me at start, because I initially didn't know how to get rid of it, but once I did, everything was fine.

Submitted

No menu (if you have sound you should have volume options). You need to start off the player in a safe area where they can learn the game. Right now it's completely overwhelming and confusing. I can't even give a proper review because of this.

Developer

Ty for the feedback. The AI does not exert pressure, you can take all the time you want building an army at your starting location. I should perhaps display this hint on game start?

Looks fun and complex, but I can hardly run this, I checked out the performance in the monitor in the devtools console, and it seems that I am getting 5-8fps on the first level with the vast majority of the processing (80%) being the drawing (painting?), and the other 20% being scripting. I spawned some fighters and moved them around but the movement and controls are tied to the FPS, which makes it hard to play. Not sure if that's because my computer is junk, but I'll have to loop back on a different computer when I get a chance. Very creepy aesthetic, got me feeling spooked after only a few minutes in the atmosphere.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for trying! The browser version is overly demanding on CPU, native should be much better. Anw. both run smoothly for me on a Ryzen 3000 series. Drop your system specs here if you have the time, would be interesting.

Ahh, macOS, interesting. Nice to see the game runs at all.

The performance problem in this case is that VRAM 1.5G is too small to hold all textures and buffers. Some driver will be swapping stuff back and forth between RAM and VRAM. This is a bigger FPS killer than slow CPU.
