I like this game, I reach the sewer and will finish the game later, but I really like where this game is going with the dark themes... people like to play with DEMONS but don't wanna pay the coins..... NOT ON MY WATCH!!!

Also, I really like the music, very very nice, is enjoyable, you did a really good job on that regard.

(1 edit)

I played until meeting Veteran in the sewers.

Only thing that felt wrong up to that point, was the sprite of veteran guy. It's unreadable with his back toward camera. Until I talked to him I didn't know what exactly I'm looking at.

I think he should look at the camera, so it's clear that he's human character, and only turn his back to us upon triggering conversation.

Controls work without problems, visuals look cool, music and sfx sounds great, and writing is such that I want learn what is going on with this fucked up setting and talk with NPCs to read what they have to say.

Dunno if I'll continue because I don't like Pokemon combat, but I'm tempted to bite the bullet because everything beside fighting is super.

You said the demo is pretty long, what % of the full game does it cover?

Developer

It's a beta version, it is the full game, you can play until the end and finish it. After the sewers the game opens up a bit, more unique encounters, sidequests and minigames. I would say after the sewers you have gotten perhaps 25% through it all, but that depends on how thorough you want to be. A full playthrough usually lands somewhere around 8-12 hours.

Originally there was supposed to be a joke where you never got to see the face of the Veteran, where his picture did not show his face. One trophy you get shows the whole sewer family, his face excluded, but I went with showing it in the end. I will consider making him turn around.

Glad you liked it, there are a lot of skills coming up as you progress which you can freely swap between outside of combat in the menu, some trophies also change a lot such as the stethoscope which auto-uses items  that takes away debuffs or status conditions without taking time out of the turn order. It's going to get cooler, it might be worth continuing. Combat is a lot more like old FF than pokemon at its core, there is a lot of turnorder manipulation possible.

First off, very nice. Out of all the games in this demo day this one feels closest to a full release to me. It has a level of polish and solid art style that I don't usually see, I am quite impressed. The dialog is funny and straight to the point which is great, some games have so much rambling dialog that I get tired of it and stop talking to npc's. Your dialog is great, I felt like talking with all the random people and those little cutscene dialogs were interesting and didn't overstay their welcome.

Music is great too.. although I think there might be a bug. Once I started my first battle this intense music started playing which was great, but after the battle ended it just kept playing (not returning to the more chill level music). Dunno if this was on purpose or if its a bug.

I like the demon designs and the combat dialog is solid. When the broom showed up I laughed. Although I didn't realize that I was about to ice the janitor, that was a nice surprise. I really like the more severe aspect to the game and the adult themes.

It's refreshing to see a game that is adult rated but not all about eroticism... also Drugs are bad m'kay.

Developer

It is a full release more or less, some bugs and kinks to be worked out. Hope that some people will get through it all and tell which ones are there. You can get to the credits my man. Really glad you enjoyed it.  The music in the motel is intentionally set up that way, and then you get another track for the final fight. It is supposed to trigger when the door opens though, so there actually is a bug there but not the one you thought.

The darker aspects of the story become more apparent with time, but no, there is no real eroticism. Some demons are themed on those kinds of subjects though but with the intention of having sad or horrific implications rather than something being sexy.

Cool, tbh the next day after demo day I don't usually have any authentic pull to come back and play the games more, but out of all the games I played this one had me wanting to play more. I think you got a real talent for writing and making a compelling story/setting that draws people in. I'm gonna keep playing and will drop you more feedback if I think of anything. Btw, are you on the agdg discord?

Developer(+1)

Thank you, I really appreciate it. I am, but I almost never post there, I am very active in the kalemonvo discord however. It's a very welcoming place and a lot of devs hang there and post progress, both from aggie and other places.

Played for about an hour, I had to leave so I cut it short (I will pick it up again later during the week). Video:

This is just like a nega-pokemon game, it is very cool to see how it reflects in all the dialog. At the start I thought "people dissapear after beating them, does it mean they are killed?", it was very confirmed when the janitor left a corpse and the other guys became a smear on the floor. Weird that the MC survives after getting defeated, knowing you a lore reason about it will be revealed eventually.

I like that the environment gets bloody after each hit.

I looked everywhere for a way to run faster. A button to speed up movement would be nice (maybe that's the bike shop purpose at certain point).

Shop owner is a homie.

I think I cheesed the countdown guy with the crow coins and critical hit. Is there another way to beat it?

It was fun, felt very polished, specially the battle end screen animations.

Developer(+1)

There are different ways to beat him, but if I remember correctly you need to get him dead before the countdown is over.

Gave it a try but not a full playthrough (yet)

The good:

* Animations are really good (I learned a few things from watching them).

* Art and Music is top noch as always.

Little details:

* Can move before inputing name on a new game.

* First time I opened it it didn't finish loading so I reopened it and it went fine (dunno if that's reproductible)

Wishlist:

* A way to run would be nice, walking feels really slow.

Developer(+1)

You can buy an outfit that increases movementspeed at the bar, cheese the card game.

Developer(+1)

Thanks my guy!

Developer

According to the programmer you can download nwjs and copy the "battledemons" folder to you nwjs folder and it will run. Same for mac.

I really like this game. Great pixel art, amazing music. Also the ice bombs really helped with the rat boss.

I don't have much for feedback and maybe I just didn't get far enough in the game... but is there any plans to get a movement speed upgrade? Kinda like how the bike works in the Pokemon games?

Developer

There is a movementspeed upgrade, yes ; ).

  • I agree with Hurri, the dialog font is obnoxious to read
  • The battle animations and text aren't doing it for me, the health bars look really out of place.
  • I hit a crow and got a crow coin +1
  • Leveling up restores HP +1
  • I had to kill some poor janitors broom -999

Solid game all around. Only thing worth looking into is different pixel font. Great game!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for streaming it o/

I genuinely think that if you just keep going along the same trajectory you are, with your style and sensibilities as a whole, amazing things will happen. Getting bogged down in nitpicks I feel would be counter-productive at this point.

Only feedback, it needs a Gary battle at the start.

Developer

Thanks for the kind comment, not including a Gary substitute is definitely a bit of a missed opportunity.

I don't usually like these kind of games, but I played for an hour.
I love the presentation: the music is great and the details like the battle backgrounds getting damaged are cool.

I'm not a fan of the grind, I understand that it's to be expected for games like these, but when considering the healing enemies it means spending a lot of time grinding rats instead of progressing.
Mud felt too unreliable when compared to the defensive boost, maybe it could be a bit more accurate since it doesn't guarantee a miss even if it lands.

Can't really judge it impartially since this genre is not my cup of tea, but seems good overall.

Developer

Sewers are the grindiest part, kind of stupid to have that be early in the game honestly, after that it is mostly unique encounters until the end . There is a grinding dungeon available too for people who like that sort of thing, but it's not really necessary.  Think you might recognize that design philosophy from my other game.

Glad you liked the music and the presentation, mud is sort of bad but needed to stay due to being funny, you get quite a lot of abilities further on which you can switch between  freely outside of combat in the menu.

-LOVE the music

-love the little details (the blood splattering on the walls during battles is fucking brilliant)

-love the pixel art...for the most part. battle sprites are gorgeous, the overworld looks rather amateur. then again, I'm one to talk lol

-based for referencing twin peaks

-writing is a bit, idk how to put it, predictable? it's pokemon but edgy and is actually about drugs; that gag has been done to death. granted, this is definitely far and away the most competent execution of that idea, and I get that it's not ACTUALLY a monclone, so touche

-battles kind of drag, but it's not quite as egregious as it is in some other RPGs, namely pokemon itself

overall, I like this a lot. I'm none too far into it, but this is already very very promising

Developer(+1)

The plot develops a bit more further on in the game, there are some funky things going on which are more interesting than the apparent initial premise. The bad pixelart is mostly done by me... the good pixelart is done by a friend of mine, Kavvan. I have improved somewhat since then but the quality is uneven. Battles are pretty much deliberately slow, but instead, looking at the overall game, many encounters are unique. Combat gets more complicated further along.

I really dig the intro and the music. I actually spent a considerable amount of time in the first room just to listen to the track. Prof Smoke sounds like a douche, but I love him. Also his facial expressions really fit him!

The items being highlighted isn’t that bad, imo. But it takes away from trying to discover things. The art is pretty amazing, especially the trainers! Love the blood.

I’ll finish it tomorrow.  But so far, I really enjoyed it!

Developer

It's pretty long, around 9-12 hours I think, so do not feel you need to rush. It is a completable story. Glad you liked it, if you do play more I would love to read your thoughts along the way. Items being highlighted with the glitter was added after feedback a long time ago, early in development, I think that one will stay, but it is a matter of taste.

Submitted

I won't rush it then. I'll try Dreams of Joy Departed first because I'll admit it, I haven't tried it, yet . I've only seen gameplay and your updates on youtube and on the general. And I did share it with my friends, and some of them really like it, others were "shocked" from seeing a wendigo with a shotgun haha. But that was really cool. tho.

Developer

Dreams of joy is really long too, just so you know, took my brother 8 hours to play it all through recently, added an ending of about 40 mins since then... so no need to rush...
