  • The concept is cool but felt like a simple hide and seek game, the lights could've been more impactful as it didn't really felt they do much and was mainly just running in and out of doors. Local multiplayer may of made the game too restrictive as both players need to see, I can see it doing well with the shadow being harder to see in online multiplayer.

Very interesting concept, I really like games where there are two such distinct opposite poles. The only thing I felt was lacking at the moment was an AI for light or darkness.

Hey   Skunkworks Studio !

How are you? It's Ilias again. I have some new questions for you.

What do you think about game jams in general, and this game jam in particular? What do you think could have been better, and do you have any suggestions?

What were your favorite video games?

Where do you think the strength of video games resides? What do you believe a video game should have to be a successful video game?

If you would like, you can tell me a little bit more about yourself and your background, if you have any information you would like to share.

Thank you in advance,

Ilias.

Played this with my sister and she enjoyed it more than me. The concept might be the best I have seen in this jam so far. A solid 5 on the innovation for that. Although, I think it is kind of hard for the shadow player as the player themselves can barely see it most of the time. Also, I would really like a mechanic where the players get to choose which door they want to go for instead of the random selection. Would make the gameplay a bit more intense. All in all, it was an enjoyable experience. You can make a full release out of this concept; It is quite unique and would be a nice selling point. Good job!

Developer

Thanks again, I actually tried to make the mechanics of going to the door he wanted, and I was going to add different mechanics, but there was no time and errors occurred, I'm glad you had fun, I don't know if I should make the game as a full version, I'm developing a game for steam right now, maybe I can publish it as a full version on steam.

Hey   Skunkworks Studio   !

How are you?

My name is Ilias.

I tested your game "Shadow & Light" ,

Questions:

Did you include any optimisation techniques or did you rather chose to include only the in-engine ones.

what engine and tools did you use to create your game , your graphics ?

was it hard to develop your game ? did you experienced any challenges ?

what inspired you for your game idea , and the gameplay ? The Game's name  and story ?

N.B:

It would mean a great deal to me if you could rate my game. If you haven't already, feedbacks from friends and fellow gamers is valuable to me.

Thank you in advance for your consideration and your time.

Thanks!

-Ilias .

Developer

hi

I just added in-game engine optimization.
photoshop and illustrator.
yes I tried to make some of the mechanics I wanted but I removed them from the game because I didn't have time.

for the game idea I thought of a complicated mechanic that is opposite and interconnected and I wanted the characters to match it.

Sometimes timeframes in jams are not enough to make all the things we like !

i am used to photoshop , yet illustrator is not really my thing !

is illustrator hard to work with , hard to learn ?

Great concept! Would be interesting to play online or have someone to play with me, as my GF doesn't like to play any video games xD

Fits good to rivalry, but just wondering is shadow a companion of the light? Or who is a companion here xD

Developer

thanks man,

The shadow is not the companion of the light but its enemy. Because behind this story the shadow is actually an invisible person. Under the light, only his silhouette, his shadow, is visible. While invisible, the shadow can do anything, but since the light is its opposite, it will be able to detect its bad behavior. In short, you can think of the shadow as a bad person and the light as a good person😁

It's such a charming concept ! It reminded me a lot of those early wiiU titles which focused a lot on asymetric gameplay.

It's a bit rough around the edges and the dark character is quite at a disadvantage but using the timer as a scoring system and alternating who plays who is already quite fun. Really neat entry

Developer (1 edit)

thanks man, I actually had a lot of ideas in my mind to add more mechanics, but since it was a jam game and I couldn't spare time, I removed most of them and put them in jam in their plain form, maybe if there is enough support and positive response, I will continue to update the game :)

This fascinating combination of shadows and light creates an immersive atmosphere reminiscent of spy vs. spy games. The game inspires with its unique approach to the use of light and shadow in gameplay. It's a really great way for characters to interact. Your game definitely deserves praise for its original concept and interesting gameplay

Developer

Thanks man, I might consider developing this idea further if I get more positive feedback

I remember playing this game when it was impossible for me to see the shadow move and i did give feedback on discord, good to see that you added the light & the shadow can be seen!
I would give this concept a high uniqueness tbh which is super good due to the implementation of sort of a spy x spy vibe!
Hard to fully enjoy the game when you control both the characters but that may just be me. Honestly this is a great entry imo. Well done man!

thanks bro , i fixed something else in game

Nice game. I like games which play around with light and dark elements (visually) and have a hard time making those. I think you did a great job in such a small period.

Unfortunately, I was unable to play it to it's full potential as a single player. If you plan to improve it, some kind of AI would be ace!

Developer

Thanks for advice, Maybe i will give some updates but idk. I am making a game for steam so i need to focus that. Maybe i will update this game and add the steam.

This game has a cool concept and implemented well. I have three suggestions to improve gameplay. First, think about comfortability when designing local multiplayer controls, mainly Shadow’s controls are a bit congested. Next, add more than one door on some floors or give the player the ability to choose which floor to create more versatile play. Lastly, I think you are using the transform to move characters, moving with addforce, or not handling collisions properly as I was able to run off the last floor through the collider with the Light character. I think rigidbody2D.MovePosition should fix this issue. Good stuff and keep creating.

Developer

Thanks for the advice, I actually had a few different mechanics to add about the game, but I had to cancel them due to lack of time. I didn't realize the mistake you mentioned at the end, thanks :)

I absolutely love the premise of this game, and I think there's really only two things I'd like to point out with it.

Firstly, when Light walks off the left side of the screen, an invisible wall stops them, but there's nothing on the right side. So when Light walks off the right side, they vanish and can't come back.

Secondly, this same mechanic means Shadow can just loop around the screen when Light gets close and always win. There might be a counter I haven't found, but that's what it looks like.

I love the idea, it's a great concept for a game that I wish I thought of myself! I've never seen a game play off of visibility like this, very well done.

Developer(+1)

Thanks bro, First of all, I didn't have the opportunity to adjust much for the mechanics of passing through the wall, there are errors and I couldn't set the crossing points exactly zero. I fixed the errors, you can try again when I update :) I was also given about 10 days, but I couldn't work much because of my work. But I'm glad you like the idea.
