How does your game represent Mode?
Mode means how something happens or is done, which is reminiscent of infections that usually die in the body, but rarely overcome the odds and end up killing it. Like a videogame protagonist, they break the mode of life. Gameplay-wise, the player can switch between melee and ranged modes of attack.

A fun game loop with modes that balance each other out well.

Nice job! I found myself making use of both modes, as I found the trade-offs of each style to be engaging. The boss was also a nice challenge, with great bullet hell mechanics. As others have mentioned, I think the hitboxes when in melee mode were sometimes unclear, though it hardly seemed to make the gameplay harder. Overall, I had a fun time!

This is a fun take on Vampire Survivors. The art is nice and consistent, and the range mode feels great.

Melee mode is really fun, but it is not clear where the hitbox is, but it does a great amount of damage and it is fun to kite with it.

I always love a little bit of bullet hell action! This was no exception. Mischievous fun playing as the “bad guy,” love the quirky enemies. I’d say my only complaint is I wish the character had some more mobility, but aside from that I really enjoyed the automatic attacks and seeing when the best time to use one or the other was.

That was fun! I wasn't particularly good at it, but I had a fun time. Really enjoyed the headcrab look and all of the enemies. It got nice and difficult when a lot of projectiles were on screen as well. I had a great time playing!

This was cool, I liked it. At first I thought it was going to be too punishingly hard but the regenerating health rate felt just right and kept it fun. Great concept of invading a host at the micro level, and the pill boss was actually adorable, love when games have mostly gnarly enemies with one random cutey. All of the death animations were really impressive, especially the final boss' death animation, watching that was a very appropriate climax to the game.

Osmosis Jones meets Binding of Isaac. Loved the concept, definitely and idea that can be explored further if given more time! Nice addition to the jam, good job!

The gameplay mechanic actually reminds me a lot of survivor games like vampire survivors, great stuff.

I personally don't really find an incentive to switch the mode gameplay, but I think it would be nice if there's some type of enemy that forced the need to switch the attack so player can experience more of the mode mechanic.

Also tips for art exporting for games: try to export as .png rather than .jpg even in things like title screen, if exporting as .jpg it'd be great if the noise can be set to none. Exporting as .png is much easier for it to be clean though. For character sprites, try to make them in similiar if not same size first so when they're resized the outlines for every character can stay consistent.

The game is certainly enjoyable, by the way! Keep up the good work!

thank you so much for playing our game! there were more enemies planned but got scrapped because of time unfortunately. also, thank you for the tips on art exporting, none of the members of our team had any experience in making art specifically for gamedev. we just tried our best with our limited knowledge and very janky solutions lol. but it was a good learning experience.

I can recommend checking medibang/firealpaca/krita for free art programs if your team don't have access to better art programs like photoshop/clip studio paint. Not sure for decent pixel art free alt so far but I think there's a lot out there. I can recommend GIMP as well for editing stuffs, their selection is actually quite clean. I'm glad that it's helpful! ^^

I can recommend Piskel to you guys; it's all web-based, and it's everything I used for all the art in my game (about 90%, not counting the occasional borrowed asset). This was my first time trying my hand at pixel art.

I really liked how often the environments switched up. Really awesome enemy variety. There are some funky hit box issues, with enemies behind me dying. But overall, awesome work!!!

great stuff! I particularly liked the four way shooting mode. I appreciate that the healing factor was quite forgiving, so i could play more of the game.

Interesting gameplay setting and concept! I think it would be super helpful if there were more reactions to hitting/getting hit, and also more accurate attack range indicators. I noticed that enemies behind me died even though I melee-ed the other direction.

Developer

I wanted to add more animations but there was no time. Also, the melee behind you thing is something i just didn't notice lol. Thanks a lot for playing the game!

Beat the game! Loved the SFX in the game. Wish it had some music to go along with it (especially on the boss fight which was a surprise). I was able to quickly grasp the controls and the game played smoothly. I liked the different enemy/boss sprites. I feel like there could have been a bit more to the gameplay such as powerups or something. But yeah, y'all did a great job!

Developer

nobody in our 5 person team knows how to do music lol. But you're right. And about more gameplay variety, keeping the scope small was very important to us so that the game actually gets finished. And thank you so much for the feedback!

Developer

Happy you liked my sounds! I made them all custom; wish I could make music too 😂

Really great game! The gameplay was very fun and I liked the enemy variety!

Great Job! This was a fun game! lots of enemy types.

Would have liked to be able to melee attack up and down, not just left and right.

Submitted(+2)

fun idea! navigating around and dodging enemies’ attacks was pretty tricky. i found it a lot easier to just use the ranged attack instead of risking anything by using the melee attack, though. it could use some more variety in gameplay, too - i liked the boss because of that, since it had multiple attacks and phases. glad you were able to finish!

Love the squishy sound effects, made me feel like osmosis jones B)

Submitted(+3)

Very addicting I must say. The sound effects are satisfying and I enjoyed running around and dodging the attacks. I liked it!

this game had some really fun ideas, I liked switching between melee and ranged auto attacks. The enemy designs were also well done, they were all unique and distinct from each other

Submitted(+2)

Fun! I really liked the enemy designs, and whenever I got down to the last few enemies in a wave, it was very satisfying going full melee mode to wipe out the remaining ones, nice one!

Submitted(+3)

Love the mushroom dudes, and the flatline sfx
