In what way does your game fit the theme?
The game is based around two completely independent systems: player movement and the behaviour of an AI companion. While the player has to navigate through different levels in typical 2D platformer fashion, he has to fully depend on his companion to clear never-ending waves of enemies - these two strangers are strangely only stronger together! A unique procedural upgrade and ability system will make sure, that no playthrough is the same as the one before.
Did you write all the code yourself and made all the assets from scratch?
The only external assets I used are icons of an UI package by Code Crash, and because I ran into last-minute issues with my sound design, I took some clips from the "The Essential Retro Video Game Sound Effects Collection". Everything else is done by a single person, me. This includes game design, programming, story, the music and everything else HEX & AGON is showcasing.
This has been my first entry to any game jam and the first somewhat complete game I ever created. Please enjoy.
Oh, and I will also work towards a full release on steam. That's how much I liked working on it. :)

Still digging the minimalism. But now also the smooth platforming and the soundtrack.

So nicely done, but intro is too long and can't be skipeable :((((((
This will be fixed in the game's first official update. :)
(I can't do anything until the voting phase for the jam is over)

Very nice game.. i loved the physics and gameplay very much. After my first death i wish that i could skip the texts all at once in order to play again.. Other than that very cool game Unicae games! cheers :)
This will be updated in the game's first official update after the jam is over. :)
The games are locked until then.
just so you know I listen to feedback and work hard on the post-jam update. :)

Great game with a really cool vibe.
It's a shame to have to redo the initial dialogue each time when you lose, because it is a bit long ^^
Good job, on the sound too!
Do not hesitate to test my game ^^
There will be an updated "Definitive Edition" of the game jam version of the game when the voting phase ended that fixes and enhances a few things. After that I'll work on the commercial release. :)
Edit: I already did play and rate your game. Well done. :>

Cool game, loved the concept. Sometimes got stuck between hexagons and had to restart but other wise great!
I agree. Although the levels change on each playthrough ever so slightly, so it's hard to balance everything solo while developing for a jam. Will all be updated and polished in the future! :)
Yeah, I can see why that might be tricky... good luck!

This is a really interesting concept. I like the different abilities you get and forging your own path along the way. I had some issues with sliding down the platforms and at some point getting stuck in the gap between two platforms. Maybe decrease the slipperyness of the slopes a little bit. The one big downside for me was that you couldn't skip the opening cutscene (or at least I didn't find a way to do it). I found it a little long-winded the first time, already, and on the second try it was just tedious. I would have played this a lot more if you could just skip the dialogue and jump right in.
See the comment below you. :D
Also, the game will eventually be "split" up into a fully fledged story mode with focus on the characters, exploration and save/resume playstyle and a dedicated speedrun mode with no dialogue and gimmicks, just pure and fast gameplay. If you liked it already, definitely stick around for that. :)
Thanks for playing.
Very interesting gameplay. Simple graphics looks is good with post-processing. I wish there was an skip dialog button when I play it multiple times.
I did put in the ability to skip the text (with right click), but I didn't think people would like and play this so much. I pretty much thought that only a handful of people will know this game even existed, try it out once, maybe like the whole setup for the game and the intro and then move on to the next game haha.

Awesome job! Especially considering you did this solo and it's your first game.
I have a soft spot for rogue-likes so I definetly liked this one and the upgrade system (though they are a bit unbalanced, 5% movespeed vs additional jump).
I REALLY enjoyed the music, great job on that one. Sounds for dialogs were well made and implemented. I was really pleasantly surprised when on the second try the narrator had different voice. I liked the chromatic abberation though it was a bit too much at times (on the first level after tutorial it is always very strong in the middle)
I think it should be mentioned in game that holding space makes you jump higher.
I did unfortunately encounter some bugs which I will list seeing that you intend on polishing the game further :)
- the health regeneration perk did not seem to work
- the dash also didn't seem to work after picking it up
- one time on a later try when I was spamming right click and space to skip tutorial as I've seen it already, the second tutorial level seemed not to trigger dialogue and I had to restart
- At the start of the first actual level hp display is wrong (e.g. it showed 10/100) until you get hit
- I suppose falling is not supposed to kill you, but you can sometimes see your hp going under 0 before resetting to 1 after falling
And it's not a bug but I found it funny that when I picked up the seeker upgrade in the tutorial and looked away from the screen for a bit, then when I came back there was a nice little seeker-fort in the middle
Also, I'm definetly the first kind of person :P
Thank you for taking your time writing this down! As you can see from this comment thread, I try to answer every question there is and take all the feedback very seriously. Some comments of mine have a bit more deeper explanation to what's going on though.
Everything "wrong" with the game pretty much just comes down to running out of time with so many things, like you mentioned, doing this completely solo and for the first time. I will update the game jam version here on itch.io to a "definitive version" with bug fixes and balance to its version after the jam's voting is over, which will be free to play for anyone. After that I will focus on getting it into early access on steam in a couple of months, with much much more content, polish and quality of life improvements. Expect a lot more easter eggs and achievement hunting, which you seemed to like, my fellow explorer. :p
The bugs you listed are already known to me. You hopefully won't enounter them next time!
Would be great to see you back with the game's first official update.
Edit: One thing to mention with the upgrade system is, that almost every upgrade scales virtually infinitely. e.g. you only get "Spread" and attack speed and this happens: a screenshot

Fantastic narrative game with some cool mechanic concepts. I can't wait for you to develop this further, as it sounds like you have big plans, and the storyline is great already! Nice clean simple design, great work <3

Simple, intuitive, good ai, I dig it.
Thanks. It's not nearly at the stage I want it to be (well, it's impossible to do in a week of solo development), but I wil work towards a fully featured and ironed-out release on steam in the next couple of months. :>

Wow, this is super clean and it has some great gameplay, I did however notice that you can easily slide on the platforms and it can make playing really frustrating
Thanks so much! I wil definitely l tone down the floatyness of the movement on release haha. I like the idea of getting a mix between physics based and typical responsive movement though.

Yoko Taro please get out of this game O.o
Had a blast playing this
Then you'll absolutely love the release version of this! I have so many great things and features planned for it. Image local co-op (where one person plays hex, the other agon) or online PVP where you have to build a "deck" out of 20 or so upgrades and go online to 1v1 others in an smash bros like arena HAHA. The possibilities are endless!
I enjoyed this game. I liked the minimalist graphics and effects. A couple things however. The platforming elements could sometimes be frustrating, it would be easy to slide off platforms or just get stuck infinitely jumping. Also there seemed to be a couple bugs for example the health regen ability seemed to do nothing (unless I'm missing something) and on my second run I got stuck in the intro dialogue section. Other than that fun game and good luck on further developments :)
Oh yeah! The controls are still a bit floaty and the level design sometimes unbalanced. Also the whole (working before) health system broke for some reason and I submitted 13 minutes before deadline, so I couldn't hotfix anyhing. This will all get fixed and expanded on in the full release version though. :)

Super well polished game with interesting dialogue and a good intro on how to use the controls. The blur when finishing a level is a touch to extreme but i get the effect you are going for and like that.
Very good and unique game, fav quote from this has to be 'For hacks sake' XD

hacks / hex / hex & agon / hexagon GOT IT? :D
Beautiful clean and minimalistic art style
Either my mind is playing tricks on me or there is a typo here (“behind of where they start” => “behind where they start”: https://gyazo.com/b394422b2880644f51bee9a2564dbfbe
I’m not a fan of how the buttons look. I don’t think they should have an outline or rounded edges as it clashes with the game’s style
I got the dash ability but I’m not sure how to use it. I don’t think the game makes it very clear
I fell into an infinite death loop before the orange square interrupted me: https://gyazo.com/4b0b686b50c1e545eb9a96b3be1c2f32
The music is a bit too loud and I feel like it gets repetitive
Platforming with a hexagon that slips and slides is quite an interesting experience although it’s a bit frustrating when you get stuck in holes
I think there should be some more visual feedback when enemies are shot at/killed
The chromatic aberration and screen bending effect gets a bit much at some points
I think enemy health should be known the player. Currently you just have to guess how many more shots it will take for them to die
When repeating the game you have to go through the dialogue again. I know you can skip it but I don’t think you can skip the voiceover
Thank you so much for your thorough review! I'll try to answer/comment from top to bottom.
mode, with more focus on the characters, dialogue, their personal development, exploration and the ability so save and reload your progress anywhere at any time. And a speedrun mode with no dialogue, fast gameplay, dedicated timers but no save/resume option. I just didn't have time to implement such a system and wanted to make sure that the overall idea of the game gets across in this demo"
I hope this clears up some things and again, I really appreciate your time doing this! I aim for an early access release on steam in a couple of months, depending on when all the main systems I want to have in the game are in the game. So keep an eye out for that if you liked the general idea of it, but thought it needed some more polish. Polished it will be!
Edit: I edited the game's page to also list all the controls in the description. Should help new players. :)

I enjoyed the music and the gameplay. Especially the physics and combined platformer mechanics. The tutorial is a little long.
There will be a dedicated speedrun mode on full release. I just wanted to make sure the whole theme and idea gets across for everyone playing the game jam version. Thanks for playing! :)
I cut the content on the video as kind of a trailer for the gameplay. I played it later. And I think this is a very well-polished game! I would like to play it if you continue to develop it.
Thank you! I will update this game jam build with various bug fixes after the voting process is over and from that point on I will work towards a steam release. So keep an eye out for that. :>

Surely! I will give it a playthrough as soon as I can get time.
I like the post effect, is well made. I feel that the physics need to be tune a bit. Add more drag, fall off too easily.
Oh yeah! It's a bit too floaty and the level design still needs more polish. But I think it can be something great in the future. :)
