Ranked from 85 ratings. Score is adjusted from raw score by the median number of ratings per game in the jam.

In what way does your game fit the theme?
The game is based around two completely independent systems: player movement and the behaviour of an AI companion. While the player has to navigate through different levels in typical 2D platformer fashion, he has to fully depend on his companion to clear never-ending waves of enemies - these two strangers are strangely only stronger together! A unique procedural upgrade and ability system will make sure, that no playthrough is the same as the one before.

Did you write all the code yourself and made all the assets from scratch?
The only external assets I used are icons of an UI package by Code Crash, and because I ran into last-minute issues with my sound design, I took some clips from the "The Essential Retro Video Game Sound Effects Collection". Everything else is done by a single person, me. This includes game design, programming, story, the music and everything else HEX & AGON is showcasing.

This has been my first entry to any game jam and the first somewhat complete game I ever created. Please enjoy.
Oh, and I will also work towards a full release on steam. That's how much I liked working on it. :)

Nice little fun game. I feel that platforming can be adjusted a little.

Submitted

Having to sit through dialog especially every time I had to restart was not fun at all but otherwise a great submission

Developer

That'll be fixed in the upcoming update in a few hours. :D

I love it, the athmosphere in the beginning was really nice. :D
I sometimes wished for the level to be a bit darker as the player objects, i sometimes lost the... seeker things and my little buddy.
Sometimes the angles were really hard to get over :D and i skilled on mobility so... yes that would be the only critism i have.

Developer

Sorry I have not responded yet to your very kind comment! I've just been caught up getting the update for my game ready.
But it is live! And intro skip is a thing now.

Very interesting game, and I liked the concept a lot! It goes very well with the theme. As much as it pains me to say it I was terrible at it. Great visuals, but hexagons don't really scale well, and if you are going for that flat-design look, maybe remove outline and round edges a bit. Audio was awesome! Good job!

Submitted

This was one super cool game, I really enjoyed it once I got the hang of it. I'm still in the middle but thought I'd jump in to leave some appreciation. Great job!

PS. if you're into great visuals and story-telling, do rate and review my game as well!

Developer

Your game is awesome! Sorry I haven't responded yet, was caught-up with getting the update for my game ready.

But it is live now! Which makes the game much more enjoyable. Hope you give it another chance. :)
Have you been working on yours in the meantime, too?

lol WUT, haha rolling down go brrrrr.

Anyways, great job, it's very polish, controller support is a plus. The ability system is great and the UI is clean. Good ambiance.

things I think could be improved:

  • When moving, the chromatic aberation+distortion effect is way to much pronounced.
  • In the level, hexagon edges gets pixelated when they are big, the texture doesn't scale well (maybe use some SVG/vector drawing)
  • the player is a bit too slippery, maybe ?
  • Add some color variation in the level (like randomizing the grey level of each platform a little bit)

I liked the randomization of the voiceover (at the begining, male/female version).

Developer

Thanks for your feedback! Here's some things I've already done and are in my changelog. :)

  • Made some improvements to Hex's movement, it should feel less floaty and jumping up slopes should be more lenient, although you still have to work with the geometry of the level to not lose momentum and if a slope is too steep, you will still fall off
  • Changed the exaggerated post-processing effect around the portal to only be active when the portal actually spawns
  • Changed the appearance of shards and artifacts to stand out more (the latter are hidden collectibles)

And that's a very small chunk of the changes and fixes haha. The thing with the colours being somewhat monochrome in the game right now is intentional, because later on there will be many more enemy types and Agon (the little companion) will be way more powerful. And all of these things will have unique colours to them - and because the screen can get pretty cluttered at times, I wanted to design the environment as cleanly as possible so the players always have audio-visual feedback on what's going on. It may feel a bit stale for now. But it will all make sense later. :)

Great ! If the white world is intended it's perfectly fine, thought you should really use a higher res hexagon sprite, as I said, the bigger your hexagon are on screen the worse its edges gets (really blurry, not sharp). Keep up the hard work !

Developer(+1)

Quick update: The post-jam update is live! And intro skip is a thing now, hexagons aren't blurry anymore and movement doesn't feel like playing an ice level on super mario. D:

Very cool game! I liked the minimal art style and the sound design. There is almost nothing wrong with this game that you have not addressed yet. The only thing is that I find it a bit weird that enemies don't have collision with the environment, sometimes they come hitting you straight from the underground. Anyways, great entry and I love that you are already developing further!

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you very much! I appreciate you taking your time and playing my little game. I'm working actively on the update already and it already fixes and polishes up so many things. I'm really excited to release that one in a few days time. :)

The thing with the enemy spawns is just a hotfix for now, because before that they'd completely get stuck in the environment and not move at all. I'll look into it if I can just draw them on top of the level objects, that'd help for now. I have to rework the spawning system for the release, so it takes into account the player's and the environment's positions more carefully. Great find though!

I hope to see you back when the game's first official update drops! :)

The atmosphere of this game is really cool. graphics are simple yet appealing. I just wish there was a way to skip the dialogue at the beginning each time you die.

Fun game! I found the game enjoyable, but the jump mechanic can be a little annoying, because of that I could not pass the first stage with enemies on my first run. On someone's first run they should get into the game a little farther before dying, but it could just be me. I do not have much to say.

Developer

Oh yeah, I totally agree with you. I'm already working on the post-jam update and the movement / jumping is much more cleaner and the game much more balanced / forgiving, plus all the little annoying bugs are gone. So if you liked the game and its ideas, be sure to give this one another try after the whole jam is over. Will be much more enjoyable then, that much I can promise. :)

Ohh such a cool platformer. I love the solid color design. It makes the game feels really polished. This was a pretty clever concept with the AI companion. We went with the solid colors approach too so would love to hear what you think of our game as well ^_^

Submitted (1 edit)

Cool game! I like how you added hidden message on two levels!

Suggestions ->

  • Add arrow-keys support
  • I like how you used just simple shapes for your game! You can spice things up a bit by adding more colors. Using a different color for the environment will help the player stand out more, just like how you used different colors for the enemies.
  • Add an option to skip typewritting effect and show the full message with the space key
  • There is no point in showing the upgrade menu just after the first level, I didn't know much about the game at that time so I couldn't tell which upgrade would be useful. You can unlock the upgrades after a few levels when the player gets to know more about the game
  • Tell the player about the control keys to respawn and dash, during the gameplay.
  • I couldn't tell much about what was happening in the level with the enemies, you can add some helpful text for that level
  • The player should be able to restart from the level they died in instead of the starting from the beginning

Bug -> The dialogue messes up and shows the whole dialogue for a frame before starting the typewritting effect.

Developer (2 edits) (+1)

I'll answer from top to bottom.

  • Oh god, how did this never cross my mind? I have full controller support but not that simple feature haha, added to the list!
  • It's made in such a way on purpose! There will be many more different enemy types, each with its own colour. The screen in the "late game" can be quite cluttered, so I try to keep the whole environment as clean as possible and focus on the things visually relevant for the player
  • The option is already in the game - it's just right click (facepalm). As this will be a story and exploration driven game, I'll just introduce a dedicated speedrun mode for those who just want to go fast (and boy, fast it can be). So there won't be any clashing of game designs anymore! I just didn't have time for that in the timespan of the jam and wanted to make sure, the whole idea of the game gets across
  • The tutorial and even whole level progression will be developed and balanced further (like the first few levels already do pretty well)
    • tutorials for movement mechanics (there will be more than just jump and dash), tutorial for the combat, etc
    • As I've said in another post, the only thing I won't explain much on purpose is the upgrade system, which players will have to explore on their own (the full game will have tons of them and even some you first have to find hidden in the game world, I've soft-implemented 35 already, they're just not fully implemented in the demo)
  • The story mode will have a "save/reload at any time" playstyle, while the speedrun mode just starts and won't be savable until you finish the game
  • I know of the bug and it bugs me too :D My current dialogue system works weirdly though (it takes the whole text and directly after that splits it up into its different characters) and sometimes the splitting part seems to be too slow, so it just flickers for a fraction of a sec. Will have to get into that

Not to be confused, I was mostly talking about features that will be in the full game. The post-jam version will get overall polish, balance and a few minor things / features to make it something complete on its own (like a simple intro skip).

Sorry, I always try to answer as thoughtfully as I can. And even if you don't want to read all this, writing this all down helps me organise my thoughts on the game, too in a way. Cheers!

Submitted
  • You could still try and check if giving the environment a different color works or not, if not a different color, you can just darken it a bit or instead give the player a different color.
  • I didn't realize that right-click could skip the dialogue! I think it would be a good idea to switch it to the space key for consistency.

Looking forward to the final game :D

Developer

Already had that with the colours (on day 1 and 2 during development) but I really didn't like it. I'll play with the colours in a few more experimental and subtle ways. :)

otherwise, THANK YOU AGAIN :D

Developer

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing, Bastian! I was sweating the whole way through, after you said "better be something good" haha. If you liked the concept and idea of the game, make sure to check out the updated post-jam version. It will be much more balanced and it will also fix some of the bugs and annoyances currently in the game. Just a note: The upgrade system is something that players will have to explore over multiple playthroughs, so they only get the short narrator prompt and that's it. Freedom and exploration are huge factors in the game. A dedicated speedrun mode will split up the game for those who'd rather just go fast. So it'll be a game for almost anyone. Just impossible to do all those things alone in a week. Thanks again!

Submitted

That is great bro! Keep working on it I am sure it will become a good game! And it already is!

Developer(+1)

Just a heads-up: I just did 2 hours of polishing work and pretty much every issue there is in the current build isn't an issue anymore. Movement is also cleaned up and I even got a webgl build working. I don't even know what to do for the next week haha. It'll be a treat!

Fantastic game. I love the roguelike elements and the atmosphere is well developed. Some really nice effects and a minimalist style add up to a very consistent and engaging experience. I do wish that The dialogue would be shorter after the first loop, since I want to get right back into the action. Minor complaint, though. 5 stars!

Developer

Thank you so, so much! Really means a lot to me, as I would've never imagined my little idea of a game getting this kind of reception in such a huge event. 5* for your review!

This is really fun! I'm really loving the concept so far.

There are some bugs and things that generally need ironing out, but really nothing egregious from a game jam.   - For example from what I can tell, the "Youth" upgrade just doesn't work.

I'm excited to see this stuff get fixed and polished once you get the chance to give the game all the love it deserves~

Developer(+1)

Oh, and they will be ironed out! They really bug me out, too. (cute joke)
Thank you so much! I really hope you give HEX&AGON another try after it got some more polish. :)

This is a really good game for a first entry. The gameplay is nice and the sound is good.

Things I would Improve: not that much blurry stuff in the graphics; shorter intro or a way to skip it; introduce enemys a bit earlier so you know what you should upgrade.

After all. Really nice. I enjoyed.

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Oh yeah, I kinda focused more on getting the general idea of the game across, because it quickly became clear that I want to make something bigger out of this. The game jam version will be updated right after the jam ends and we are allowed to patch. Will all feel much more polished then I hope! :)

Very Cool Game!! Had a lot of fun playing it!! There are a few bugs but that's negligible when in comparison with the whole gameplay.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. All those bugs and balance issues will be fixed with a "definitive game jam edition". After that, it has become clear, time will be dedicated to get this a proper release on steam.
