youwhatnow?

This is a really cool take on the theme. Catchy music, wonderful little pixel art pieces, and movement rules that most folks will just understand without needing to be taught. That's a powerful combination and you did some cool stuff with it. I think the rooms end up being a little too big, especially with certain pieces being able to move more than a full screen (either away from you or onto you). This makes it a little more chaotic for chaos' sake. Chaos is cool but not when it feels like gameplay is sacrificed.

Overall, great aesthetic that has a lot of potential. I enjoyed my time with it. Well done!

This is GENIUS! PLEASE make this into an actual game, i'd totally buy it!

Everything about this was really cool! Well done to all of you, because the graphics, music, and gameplay were all great!

AMAZING GAME! i really liked the music and it kinda reminded me of crypt of the necrodancer a little bit. The only thing i dont like is that all the animations feel very soft and not snappy enough, maybe there should be more sfx?

Developer

I do think this game could use some more "juice". Was wondering about adding some particles, a touch of screenshake, and some rhythm-pulsing stuff (I really wanted to make stationary pieces jiggle in time with the music as if there was a giant subwoofer under the board). Maybe I'll spend some time working on a juicy update for when the voting period ends, we'll see.

Gonna be coming back to this well after the jam. Great work!

Amazing art and music! The gameplay was really fun too! Good job !

I really liked this game although I didn't instantly realise that you don't have to move on bit. Why not btw? It'd be a very nice twist IMO

Developer

Moving on beat in this game is, admittedly, a bit strange. So, technically you always move on beat, but I wanted to give players some grace to deal with various forms of input lag and make the game more accessible to newer players. I had experimented with a few control schemes, and the one in the game is the one I found to be most responsive. The king always moves on beat, but the inputs can be fudged quite a bit. That said, you'll find the controls to be the most crisp if you go with the beat since (to oversimplify a lot) your inputs are queued if you aren't close enough to the rhythm.

I see. But I can hold the button and that makes me move (I believe) faster than the beat goes. I'll check it out next time I play because I will definitely play this one more.

Do lvoe myself some rhythm games, it's sadly not really innovative though, since it's like Crypto of the Necro Dancer, But to see the game working this well ina week. Good job :)

I like chess, so of course i like this game. It's very well polished and the movement is great. The knights seem to always move fast, maybe this is a bug. Nonetheless very good game!

Loved the idea and design. Also the music and rhythmic movements!

Gets a little too hard but with a little level design and story, giving motivation, you can even release the game!

Good job!

This is insanely impressive! Everything is solid! The music is awesome (coming from a music producer)! Who made the music?

My only small complaint is that it was a little bit confusing knowing where I was. I think a minimap would be very helpful.

This is a top contender!

Thanks! The music was made by a friend of mine. I'm pushing him to post more of his stuff online because it's all really good. I'll let you know when he decides to get a Spotify, lol.

Damn this was chaotic fun :)

Loved the concept and the Game

Awesome game! Surely a candidate for the winning position!

Submitted

Its was really unique !
But it wasnt that much chaotic.

Overall very polished for the time allowed and interesting gameplay.

The flow of navigating the rooms feels a bit easy to get lost if you have to backtrack.

Maybe could use some more of an underlying objective for replayability.

Developer

I was wondering about adding a mini map to aid navigation but didn't have the time. Would you say that a mini map would make the game better or worse?

Submitted

My personal solution would be to generate rooms lazily so that each room always has an entrance and exit.

I think a minimap would be cool but maybe not necessary. You could get away with some kind of exit indicator.

(1 edit)

this game is soo good

well compared to the other ones

its chaotic

its good looking and polished

the only negative things are that its almost impossible to distinguish each enemy and just a couple of horses can make  it impossible its quite unfair

Great game, loved the concept of this, though the theme could have been implemented better.

I agree. Graphics are very nice, smooth controls and animations but I didn't feel much chaos from this
