Really cool game.

The keyboard controls aren't great, but it's nice that there is controller support. In the web build the jumping repeatingly stops working, so I switched to the windows build. Some names also don't work one moment, but are then fine at other times. The jokes were fun, but I couldn't get past the part pictured below. Perhaps you can also add a sfx when you reach a checkpoint.

Developer

I know that the keyboard controls are not great, but there is not much I can do about it other than asking the player to play with the controller :D 2D Platformers are just meant to be played with a controller.

Yeah, the web build is full of bugs the windows version does not have. I have no idea why Unity is doing this... Trying to fix the bugs from the web version is a shitty task for a game jam, because the compilation takes something like 10 min during which I can do literally nothing. If we continue to work on the game, we will find the time to fix those bugs.

It's sad that you didn't get past this point. The game might be a little on the more difficult side :D You are missing some jokes, theme related dialogues and the punchline at the end.

The sfx for the checkpoint is already on the todo list + a visual indication which checkpoint is active. I might also increase the trigger area for the door so that a player always activates the checkpoint :D

Thank you very much for your feedback. I will definitely play your game this weekend. It looks really cool and people seem to like it a lot.

I cannot press finish in the character creation menu (in both web and windows build).

Developer (1 edit)

Your name has to be at least 4 characters. Don't ask me why I put this restriction there.

Just add a number to your name. You might get the message that it is not available, add another number and try again :D Your name is not used anywhere in the game. This is one of the lies the game is telling you.

i really like the UI , music and game feel so much

i enjoy playing it.

i really appreciate that  this game made in 1 week

i wonder if can be the Space for jump that will be better in my opinion

and why i can't  name my character Kamelia  👀👀 is that  name make you angry  or feel bad  i really want to know :D

will played

Developer

Thank you very much and I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Space would be an option, but the keybind was copied mainly from Hollow Knight. And I think Ori and the blind forest also used Y/Z for jumping. But that game was not really designed for keyboard, but for a gamepad. So if you have one that makes the game even better.

Ok, you didn't get the joke with the name. The theme for this jam is "The game is a liar" and this is one of the times the game lies to you :D Your name does not really matter at all, because it is never used again in the game.

yep i get it now ...

after i play it for a while ... i actually i have fun playing it  and i like the way you write the text  conversation

oh wow.. this is the game I  want to make..

Developer

Thank you for playing it! ;)

Really cool game :)

The only problem i had was that i somehow glitched into the floor at one point.

Developer

You glitched into the floor? That's a new bug :D

Where you able to restart the level after the glitch?

Submitted

Well it was early in the game so i just restarted the game :)

But it was when i hit my head against the ceiling. It just let me slowly fall through the floor until my character was gone.

I took a screenshot after the character disappear:

Developer

Ok, that is really weird. The only explanation I have for this is that the collider for the tiles were not combined correctly from the compound collider in Unity. I will check that area for stuff like this. Thank you very much.

This is unbelievable. How the hell did you manage to do it in a single week? :)

'Unreliable tutorial' - I suppose, many ppl went with this for the theme. :)

The one issue I had is when the character gets damaged, he starts blinking, and that actually makes controlling him rather difficult, because, well, half of the time you can't see him. I'm not sure this is a suitable effect in this case.

Developer

Thank you very much. We were able to pull this off because we took leave and by working like crazy :D I roughly put 100h of work into that game. My two colleagues something similar I would say.

Yeah, the main idea for the game is revealed after the training and we put some other portions in where the game is lying to you. One thing is that your first name is not available, which is complete bullshit because your name is never ever used again in the game :D Not many understood that joke I think :D

The issue you are talking about is something that got added through building the game. In the editor the player is blinking in white and also the enemies when you hit them. I recognized it too late that we had this bug. Sorry that this makes controlling the character worse...

It's incredible to have this level of polish for a week of work. Hollow Knight was one of my favorite games since a long time, but while I can feel it as inspiration, it doesn't feel like Superhero Academy is a copy by any means. I think using more high-tech stuff (such as lasers and electrified stuff) for environment's dangers would fit the setting better than spikes, but this is such a minor thing among many great things in the game (like the tight platforming for example). The music score also fits the game very well and match the visual style perfectly! Great job!

Developer(+1)

you're right about laser and dangerous electrical stuff but unfortunately there was no way to add all these things that I had actually thought of. For example, I also prepared an explosive tile (bomb) that was not integrated. Thanks for playing it anyway and thanks for the positive feedback! :)

Developer(+1)

Yeah, we are also stunned by what we were able to pull off within in this week. A lot of time and work was put into it tho, but it was totally worth it :D

You are the first one that is mentioning the spikes and I have to tell you that our graphics designer was also not happy with how I used them. And I also agree that the spikes are not so nice and some point should use less spikes (level 2 - dash). Unfortunately the time limit prevented us from changing the levels. If we ever continue on this game, there will be much less spikes, maybe even none because they do not really fit in such a futuristic theme.

Submitted(+2)

This was really well made for just a week! I had some of the same thoughts as the other comments below, with the similarities to Hollow Knight and the camera not looking forward. I also got a bug where the game soft-locked after dying, though I'm not too sure what caused it. Awesome work!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback.

Hollow knight was the inspiration for it. At least from the controls perspective.

The soft lock is a web build issue. Super annoying and we found it out too late. The windows version is fine, but I think the rating is done and you won't give it another try :D

Submitted(+1)

Ah! Good to hear! It's hard to fix all the bugs in such a short time. I already got through the game, but I can still update the rating.

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much. Getting bad ratings because of such a stupid bug really annoys me.

Submitted

I don't think bugs should detract much from ratings either, I already gave a pretty good one.

Submitted(+2)

Cute game with a cute art style, could easily see this as a kids show or something. The level of polish the game has for under a week is amazing.  Great job!

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much, but I'm not planning to make a kids show anytime soon :D haha

First of all thank you very much for your lenghty feedback. Really appreciate it. Here is some feedback to your feedback :D

What do you meant with utility in your first comment? The character customization is purely cosmetic and should make the game more interesting for you because you have a character nobody else might have :D Especially with the possibility to give him a name. Btw. the game is lying to you that your first name is not available because your name will never ever be mentioned in the game. I think nobody got that joke :D

Yes, Hollow Knight was my main inspiration. Did I do a good job reconstructing the controls?

Yeah, I did not really tweaked the gravity after I thought it was ok. I got then used to it while designing the levels. Unfortunately, none of our testers mentioned that the gravity was too high, so I didn't change it. But after getting this feedback several times now, I will pay more attention for my next games. Maybe I will make a checklist for my testers so that I get feedback for everything :D

Yeah, I used the cinemachine package from Unity which has a look ahead feature but I could tweak it so that it felt right. I will tweak the shit out of it for the next game :D

Thank you very much for playing the game until the end. Some people were not able to finish it and therefore didn't get the punchline/twist of the game.

Developer(+1)

Btw, if you want to learn how I made the character creator/customizer, give me a follow on twitter or itch or both ;)
I'm making a tutorial for that. https://twitter.com/FireTotemGames/status/1169363826887860232

Character Customizer Tutorial

Wow, it looks like a professional game ! The character controls are excellent, the music accompanies the game well. The fact that you can customize your character is a really nice addition. Everything is very well done :o Good job guys !

Developer(+1)

Thank you. We take it as a big compliment because nobody of us is a professional :D We are all just starting with game development.

Everybody loves the character customization. If you click on follow you will get an update when I make the tutorial for that. In case you want to learn how I did it.

I really enjoyed this game! The level design and narrative  seemed well thought out. The fact that you had a customized character was pretty impressive. Very nice job.

I'd love to hear what you think of my game!

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much.

Check your comments, I already played it. Comment Nr. 4. ;)

Character Customizer Tutorial

Very well polished game! I found that the tutorial was a little long, though I liked the cute twists (e.g. that the spikes actually did damage!)

Some critical feedback for an otherwise solid entry:

  1. I like that your icons in the menu are shooting for minimalism, but they are at a cost of clarity. The three bars icon on the left looks like it would be for some kind of menu (ala mobile-friendly websites). And the play button (which is ">", also used for the back button in the credits page...) should ideally be first in your menu, to fit with player expectations. You may consider different icons, or to just go ahead and put text there. The important thing is to make the interface clear and easy to use -- I'd place that a hair above visual style. Perhaps the icon along with some text. This is a small issue. Your visual language for the game is very cohesive and playful.
  2. Work on your grammar for the intro text. You clearly placed a lot of emphasis on character dialogue for this, and it adds a ton to the charm of your game. I loved it. But the few typos and grammatical stumbles pulled me out of the otherwise immersive experience.
  3. The game camera needs much more lookahead. I found 80% of the screen to be occupied by what my character had already made it past. Your environment is so beautiful and immersive that it is a disservice to your artists to not have the player camera looking forward into the world! It also would link to the platformer game mechanic. There is a reason why most moving-camera platformer games tend to have the player in the corner opposite the direction of movement. Not sure if you are using Cinemachine, but this would be an easy fix that would go a LONG way in pulling people into the game.

Overall, this is a model entry for a game jam. Even though you worked on a team, it really shows how much work you all put into this. It is a very impressive accomplishment that the group of you pulled off in 7 days. Your music and sound effects were aligned with the visual style and story.

Congratulations on your great entry!

Developer(+1)

Wow. Thank your for your long and valuable feedback. I just wrote a feedback for your game :D

Did you finish the game? Because then you know why the tutorial is so long ;)

Some feedback to your feedback:

1. You are correct that the credits button looks like a menu, because it's the same that is used in the pause menu :D We were a little lazy there and thought it was ok. But I will consider your feedback for my next game.

2. Hmmm... That's a little weird. I got my text proof-read two times. Are there really that many mistakes? I was sure to be quite correct on the dialogues.

3. Yes, I used cinemachine and I tweaked the camera a lot. I even tried out the look ahead stuff, but it had some problems. It was very hard to tweak for the moment the player turns around. You could go with a slow transition to the look ahead in the other direction which feels weird because it takes so long. Going with a fast transition which would help the player navigate was making me really dizzy when switching left and right a lot (wall jumping for example). Additionally it had the weird behaviour to return to the center of the player when I jumped without moving. So I had to ditch that part and go with the "backwards" camera approach. I would say the game is suprising the player from time to time :D

Yes, we are very proud to have created this game in just one week. We had some struggle with the theme and low motivation at the start, but we sit through it and it was worth it :D
