That was so cool, hit all the nostalgia strings pretty well - loved the music and the paralax backgrounds (is it H-blank scrolling?). I played on the emulator, but I would want to get it running on my DS at some point. Hot spring in a top hat is my kind of vibe :)
Thanks a lot. Glad you found the top hat and enjoyed a bath in the hot spring π
I would expect this to feel even more nostalgic on the DS :)
I used GB Studio to create the game and the parallax effect is one of the built-in options. So I can't say for sure what's running under the hood. But I'm pretty sure it's H-blank scrolling. There are not really any other options for the Game Boy to handle more complex parallaxes like this.
That's nice that you don't have to hardcode everything in. It works on the emulator so it should work on real hardware as well. Nowadays anything's possible, but I think those 30-or-so year consoles can still surprise us!
Game is pretty amazing i will love to play on my gameboy and the art is pretty amazing!!
Thanks so much! π©·
If you have a flashcart you should not have any problems running this on your Game Boy :)
i played ur game on gameboy emulator on a phone which is too much old sadly i dont have gameboy but the game was so cool and the graphics are so good i want to add the scanline filter that will make it more like gameboy feel
Wow I am so impressed at how nice of a game you were able to make in 72 hours!!!
Thanks π But to be honest, I did not do much else than eat, sleep and work on the game during this time. So, I basically crammed a full-time work week into those 3 days π
Such a cute game! The expeditions remind me of the feeling of walking around with a pokΓ©walker when I was younger :D Also incredible how many items are in this game that can be collected! Also loved the UI especially the moving cherry blossoms in the main menu!
Thanks so much! π
I loved the PokΓ©walker as a child. I still love walking with the Digimon Vital Bracelet. Not quite the same, but still a lot of fun. Also, I'm really looking forward to the new Digivice π
What a beautiful little game! I really enjoyed the artstyle and vibe. There's so much polish here, it cannot be understated how impressive that is to achieve in just one weekend. One thing I encountered was that I bought a flower (costume) that didn't appear in my inventory :( And I didn't know whether I was able to put more than two pieces of furniture in my house? I can see a lot of potential here and I hope you continue working on this game! Thanks for participating!
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed the game and thanks a lot for your feedback. I'll look into the thing with the flower. I hastily threw together both shops in the last hour before the deadline. So, I would not be surprised if there was a bug with the flower. I'm going to investigate. Thanks for letting me know :)
Unfortunately having 2 pieces of furniture in your house at the same time is the maximum the Game Boy can handle without visual glitches. The Game Boy (Color) can only draw up to 10 sprite tiles (each 8x8 pixels) in the same horizontal line. The furniture pieces are up to 4 tiles wide and the player sprite is 2 tiles wide. So I'm already at the technical limit of the hardware. But I'm thinking about having elements in the foreground like pets. Plus, you will be able to change the wallpaper and floor design once I get to update the game :)
Thanks for the amazing game jam. I had a blast ππΈ
That's so interesting to learn! Glad you enjoyed!
Waho it feels like a finished game, impressive that you did this in three days! It'd be nice that one could get in and out of the menu instead of going completely out of it. Not sure if there was a way since I don't own a game boy. I am in awe that you draw all this by yourself in a few days, it has so much personality, it's crazy good! The story is nice and it works, you should totally implement your other ideas. keep it up!
Wow, thanks a lot ππ
Doing pixelart certainly helps with drawing faster. All items are just 8x8 pixels. So that takes way less time than other art styles :)
Regarding the menu: You mean like when exiting out of e.g. the inventory you would like to get back to the main menu instead of the game world? That should be no problem to implement. However I decided against it to make the experience more streamlined for the player. I was afraid that if you always have to press B twice to get back to playing, this might get frustrating over time π
(Also you can switch between inventory slots using the select button, making it unnecessary to go back to the main menu in most cases. But that's not explained in the game so far).
I'll see if I can simply add an option to toggle between these modes :)
Your game is splendid ! I love the pixel art and the game boy style, I'm impressed you it all alone :D
I was surprised by the exploration gameplay, its refreshing in the middle of the game. Good idea to add variation in the game. I enjoyed it !
Thanks a lot π₯°
I'm really happy to hear you enjoy the exploration gameplay. I want to expand on this in future updates :)
wow now that's a very polished game! really cozy and cute. i only struggled a little bit with controls - it would be really cool to include some control-tips inside the game, but I know it's a lot of additional work for a short time!!
Thanks a lot! π
Yeah, I know the controls on PC are a little bit strange. That's because the webplayer actually contains an emulator that emulates the Game Boy game. I have not figured out yet how to remap the buttons. And if I include information about keyboard-controls, people who download the ROM to play it on a standalone emulator / retro handheld / original hardware might be confused. So, for now I have listed the controls on my itch page. But I absolutely agree that this is less than ideal.
i see, great work anyway!
Nice game. Enjoyed playing it.
Thanks π
This game is great! It's super cute, very polished and pretty big for a weekend jam.
Also: Capybara!
Thanks a lot! Yeah, I had that song stuck in my head while making the game π
I like style. Presentation 10/10!! Capibara))
Thanks a lot! π§‘
Now this is just so stinkin' cute. Spring? Cozy? 10/10 on both counts!
Thank you so much π₯°
This was really fun to play!
Thanks π
Super cute! I'm really impressed by the quality of the art and the music, I could really feel the inspiration from old gameboy games through the mechanics and the dialogue presentation and the minimalistic input style. I'm blown away by the scope of the game. I never figured out how to get the stuff in the screenshots, the items in store never updated from the lamp and couch in the deco store and flower - sapling - tangerine - baseball cap in the boutique. Regardless, getting such a polished game pushed out in such a small time frame is no small feat - congratulations!
Thanks so much! π
The limitations of the Game Boy hardware - while often a hindrance - certainly helped a bit in getting things done: Since the Game Boy screen has a resolution of only 160x144 pixels, the sprites can't be too big. And creating smaller sprites is a lot faster than creating larger sprites.
The shops don't update yet. I threw them together as quickly as I could in the last hour before the deadline. I'm going to completely overhaul them after the jam. I'll add a day-night-cycle and the shops will have new items each day. However, you can get (most of) the items from the screenshots from treasure chests during exploration.
This game is so cute I love it!! I LOVED that I could go into the pond (even though I couldn't get back out haha).
If you end up adding a bit more gameplay and challenge for the adventuring later, that could be really cool. But, considering this was a jam game made in a weekend, I am impressed!!
Thanks a lot π I'm planning to add quite a lot more content. I have quite a few long train travels ahead of me, that I'm going to use for more pixelart for this game.
Yeah, getting out of the pond can be a bit tricky. Currently the player hitbox has the exact same height as the gap between the rocks. Walking diagonally against a wall makes it somewhat feasable. But I'm going to look into ways to make it easier to get out again. Thanks for your feedback π
I really adore the art style you used for this game! And the way the sequences play out really feel like classic PokΓ©mon games! Absolutely great game! <3
Thank you so much. I'm glad you like the game. Can't wait to play yours π
^-^ <3
By far the cutest artwork of the game jam from what I've seen! I also noticed the selling-items-infinitely glitch. No biggie, more money! Also I'm extremely impressed you made a GBC game for this game jam in 3 days. My only critique is I wish there was more!!
You are too kind π₯° Thank you so much π
I had so many more ideas for this game. But 3 days just were not enough time. Until 1 hour before the deadline there weren't even any shops yet, basically making the game pointless. So, I threw them together as quickly as I could. (Thus, I'm not really surprised about the bug. I'm actually more surprised the shops are even somewhat functional π ).
But I'll continue to work on the game in the future π
This is my fav game so far (even tho there's so many amazing ones) and for sure the most complete, it's amazing for a 3 day jam. Pls make this a mobile game and I'm hooked haha
Wow! Thanks a lot! π
If the game really resonates with people, I might actually turn it into a mobile app. Until then you could play it on emulators on your phone π
INCREDIBLE. I got to put a little leaf on my little capybara head. I love this game! Amazing work for just three days.
Thank you so much π
The leaf is also one of my favorite costumes π
This game is wonderful. I absolutely love the atmosphere - and the fact that it's a genuine GBC game is incredible. Dialogue, cutscenes, customization, gameplay - this little game packs so much. Even the music brings me back to the GBA and Pokemon Emerald (since I never had a GBC), and I love it.
One glitch I did find is that I can sell items infinitely, if I keep talking to either shopkeeper after the first expedition. But other than that, this was a really amazing experience. It feels like a real, professional game haha.
I'm really glad you enjoyed the game π
I love developing for the GBC and I loved PokΓ©mon Emerald π
I recently had someone from Fiverr put me as a player character in to Emerald. It's like a dream coming true.
Thanks for letting me know about the glitch. Should be an easy fix once the upload ban has been lifted :)
