Dang, this game was hard but it was pretty fun;

I only was able to make it to the second level, but it was fun.  It is harsh that you don't get a life refill or anything between years.  Like others have said, the collision is definitely a little wonky, which makes it slightly frustrating.  There were times I would pass right through an enemy without any problems and others where I would take damage with no contact at all.

Nice PICO-8 game.

This was fun. They should replace the dinosaur game in the chrome browser with this. I like the simple controls and easy to understand gameplay. My only issue was the enemy collision was a little spotty, but I don't think it game breaking. My favorite was the snowboarding part.

Wonderfully wacky! Restarting from level one when you die is a bit harsh. The collision with the monster does not seem to work very well. Sometimes you loose a life point and sometimes not.

I completed level 1.

I especially like the snowboarding section! Lovely!

Echoing concerns about hurtbox. Keep working with PICO-8 though, I love these little games!

"little game"???????????? how dare you!

P.S. Thanks for the comment!

I made a little game, too! :)

Pretty good overall, but a couple small things would improve it a lot:

- The hurtbox on the main character was really bad. I think it's shifted behind the character by a substantial amount.

- Enemies need some kind of animation right before they will jump. Right now it's unpredictable, so you just make sure you double jump past every enemy no matter what (you can't really try to dodge them because the enemy jumps are so random)

- The double jump attack needs to be a little weaker, or maybe more interesting somehow. Right now, it doesn't feel that great double-jumping past all of the enemies. It would be better if there was a trade-off to attacking the enemy vs trying to dodge the enemy, because right now its optimal to just attack past every one.

All fair points, thanks for the feedback!

A fun little game. I tried not to break BK's face, but it happened anyway.

Cool game!  Art was really nice!  Love that Pico8 feel!  Gameplay was fun too though got a little boring after a while.  One piece of constructive feedback:  Could you make it a little more challenging by making the hit box / timing go away from the double jump attack after a while?

Developer

Probably a good suggestion. It's a little too easy to just double jump constantly and keep yourself invincible most of the time. Making it temporary would force actual timing. Thanks for the feedback!

Love the simplicity of the game. The artwork and music are also great. Overall this is a solid game. Nice job.

Pretty cool retro style game, was fun to play.  Nice work on the soundtrack too, works well.

I made a game similar in scope to this called "Lava Ice Run". I can imagine you followed the same Flappy-Bird tutorial that I did for reference. It's a very helpful and insightful tutorial, I must say! Lava Ice Run was my first original game, and I'm proud of it.

I think the most commendable thing in your project is your artwork. I like that your levels each had a different theme. Also, did you mix your own chip-tune, or is that an asset you found? If its your own, then I have to give you props for that as well! It'd be nice to know what level of work you put into your assets.

I found it difficult to get used to your game's controls. "Double Jump makes you invincible" wasn't the most intuitive thing for me, but once I discovered it, I felt like it was more feasible to beat all 3 levels. It was a satisfying ending.

Lastly, I liked your sense of humor in the game. My wife and I found the collar-bone breaking death comical XD

Good luck this jam!

P.S. is that an army of Donald Trumps in the third level? XD

Hey, thanks for the reply.

I can imagine you followed the same Flappy-Bird tutorial that I did for reference.

I did not follow that Flappy BIrd tutorial but this is the first thing I've ever created using PICO8 so I did go through a lot of educational materials related to that.

All of the audio was made by me using the PICO8 sfx/music editors. If you've never messed around with it go check it out, it comes with relatively easy to use editors for everything including code, maps, graphics, sfx and audio: https://www.lexaloffle.com/pico-8.php

I put some details about the fact that double-jumping is an attack on the game page but I wish I had made it more clear and also made it more clear when an enemy is killed or does damage to you. Next time I do something like this I'll definitely keep that in mind... visual feedback is pretty important and I think it's lacking a little here.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thanks for your detailed reply! PICO8? I'll have to check out that tool. Yes, the amount of effort you put into this game makes it all the more impressive. Well done!

I really liked the look of this one, and especially liked the audio behind it! Fun little tune.
