Just wanted to check in on these threads again:

It looks now like games that previously worked in IE/Chrome are also beginning to not work due to this issue and stricter browser requirements that come with newer versions of those browsers. One of my games from a 2020 jam is basically unplayable in any modern browser as a result: https://elennick.itch.io/httpselennickitchiosuper-moonshot-adventure

Is there any plans to try and address this? Thanks!

Unfortunately the original thread on this topic has been archived (https://itch.io/t/1028526/cross-origin-policies-for-webassembly) but I wanted to check and see if there has been any movement. This is still causing games being ported to the web via Emscripten to be unplayable in Firefox and potentially other browsers as their default security settings change.

The Firefox issue is not surprising, that is related to the issue I linked about on the game page. The Chrome thing is weird though, thanks for letting me know.

I like your aesthetic and your take on the theme... literally using the moon as something you shoot. Was easy to understand and play and I also liked the music. Nice job!

I discovered after I submitted I actually could have improved the texture scaling so it wouldn’t be so blurry but unfortunately it was too late. Also, it does tell you the level number in the bottom left. You might have to scroll your browser down slightly to see it if you’re not scrolled far enough. Thanks for your feedback!

As far as frustration with flying/shooting - the ships felt sluggish. Additionally, the POV is pretty zoomed in so there isn't a lot of time to notice an asteroid coming and move the guns and fire and actually destroy them before they hit you or fly by. While I was playing I think i only used the initial small ship (the one you crash with the astronauts) and the bigger ship you get second. I wound up restarting a few times and repeating with these ships because I flew too far up or over and didn't feel like trying to navigate my way back to land.

Also I hope this doesn't feel negative. If anything, what you have feels like a great foundation and I can see a clear path something really great... I always wind up having more constructive feedback in that sort of case. You all did a great job and I'm impressed you did this much so quickly.

So I felt really split here.

Good - The art and effects and theme are consistent and look fantastic. You guys made a great looking game with a very consistent and pleasing aesthetic. Maybe the best I've seen so far in everything I've looked at this jam. Additionally, the music from DOS-88 is great, I love it.

Could Use Work - The controls and just gameplay in general were not super clear. Once I did start to get and understand what I was doing, it turns out it was just really simple and not all that fun. I also managed to just fly out of the map both horizontally and vertically and when I did stay on the map, flying the ship and hitting stuff with my guns was kind of frustrating. Would also be good to add some sound effects (as long as it doesn't interfere with the sweet music).

I know time is limited in a jam so I super hope you keep iterating on this afterward because it seems like a great start that you put a lot of effort into.

The physics/math right now are kind of limited... it only applys gravity towards the "closest" planet, one at a time but it judges that based only on the center of the planet and not at all on how big it is or how close the surface is. I was thinking about trying to improve that and add some nuanced effects like you're suggesting. I also was considering adding a black hole or singularity entity as something that could apply gravity but NOT be something you can land on. Lots of possibilities for sure, I'm always open to suggestions for post jam improvements if you've got them. Thanks for the input!

I believe it's acceptable to update to fix issues like this... see the thread here: https://itch.io/jam/game-off-2020/topic/1090193/can-i-edit-the-game-if-i-submit-...

Good looking game, good sound effects, nice animations and good music! I also really liked the boss fight, it was well designed and a difficult test of agility but I was able to get past it. I would recommend tweaking the physics a little to make it a little more snappy and improving the enemy AI a little as they seem really braindead.

Great job! I felt accomplished after finishing this.

Great looking and polished game. Nice job!

Fun game. I think I beat it? After a few levels it just kind of stopped doing anything so I'm guessing that was the end. I like the graphics and the concept is cool. Would be good if the interface and indicators from the game were better so it was clear what I could interact with and what was happening.

Seems like a cool foundation. Looks really nice and controls well. Would be nice if it was a little less repetitive and there was more to it. Also I noticed that the snakes don't actually hurt you so at some point I stopped even bothering with them and just walked past them. Great job!

THE EARTH IS DESTROYED GAME OVER

^^ meme worthy statement right there, made me laugh

Fun, simple and solid concept. Controls well and looks nice. Would be great to add some more depth to it but I like what you have. Nice job!

You've got a great start here. The game controls simply and well, the graphics are clean and nice, the music is good, the concept is sound. Would love to see a little more content... I got to the shuttle and then was just kind of going forever without much purpose. I also am not sure what the jetpack is useful for... the other moves were all useful but that one not so much. Nice job!

When I first clicked on this I went "oh... another moon golf game"... then I actually read a little closer and played and realized this is a super clever and unique take on the jam theme. Especially loved the appropriate soundtrack... excellent job!

I really love how deep and consistent you went with your theme and aesthetic. Everything comes together really nicely and looks beautiful. Even little details like the lightning getting softer as you use up the moon energy and it starts to crescent really adds a lot. Some cute and funny dialogue and characters as well. If you decide to do more dev past the jam, it'd be great if you worked on the physics a little bit... the character is a bit floaty and slow which makes the platforming difficult at times. Awesome job overall, I really liked this.

Fun game! Would be cool if asteroids gave a hit indication when they take damage but aren't destroyed yet. Could also use some music. Those sentry turrets are really strong! Nice job!

I thought this was very polished and focused and was a really good take on the theme. Nice job!

Really hard. I wish there were some checkpoints because starting over every time is pretty brutal. I really liked the voice acting!

This is really great. I really liked your take on the theme, your overall aesthetic and the whole concept of swapping back and forth between characters who were all working together but separate.

My biggest gripes would probably be that:

  • Some of the platforms and traps were really difficult to see until it was too late.
  • The controls felt a little finicky... was hard to move and jump and click and I kept falling or getting stuck in a way that was frustrating in a few spots.

Overall though I thought this was really sharp. Great job!

Very polished and well executed. Took me 15 tries. Nice job!

Thanks for this comment, you actually taught me something I didn't even know to look into. I just tested my game with nearest neighbor interpolation enabled when scaling instead of linear (which is the default) and it looks MUCH better. Too late to update my submission now but that is great to know going forward.

This might be the most literal interpretation of the theme I've seen so far... literally shooting the moon. I had a tough time getting good at the controls but It's actually really neat and unique to have literally EVERYTHING be driven by shooting a gun... even movement. Nice job!

I was not able to get this to run in Windows 10. Downloaded your windows zip and extracted the .exe but when I run it nothing happens. Let me know if there is an issue you're able to fix because I'd love to try this... screenshots look awesome.

Just wanted to let you know I used this in my gamejam game here - https://itch.io/jam/game-off-2020/rate/832614

I credited you in a comment on the page as well as on my github page for the game here - https://github.com/elennick/moonshotadv/blob/main/README.md

Thanks for such a great track!

Thank you! I'm glad the level design came across well because I was trying really hard to teach the mechanics/entities in the game in the first ~10 levels and then do interesting stuff with it for the rest. I'd love to have had another 5-10 levels but I just ran out of time to create more content.

I did not write the song but I agree, it's great... the credit goes to David Harris - https://david-harris.itch.io/ost-many-stars

Yea - I'm aware of the shortcuts thing and it was mostly unintended. I tweaked the physics a number of times without going back and doing the same with the levels and as a result things got a little out-of-whack. I understand what you mean about the stickiness when you land as well... I was trying to improve the physics up until the very last moment and just kind of ran out of time. Thanks for the kind words!

I am the bane of all SpaceSnakes. They tremble before my blaster.

Loved this, played all the way to the end and got my coffee. Great job!

I love these graphics.

Loved the music and audio! I was able to beat it and get to the ship once. Would have appreciated if I could have just held down the mouse button instead of having to spam click to shoot. Nice job!

I loved your gameplay here. Really cool puzzle mechanics and fit the theme super well as well. Nice job!

I like how clean and polished this feels... funny dialogue too. Was maybe a little bit too hard with so many turrets popping up in all 3 directions but maybe you were going for that... nice job!

Really nice clean graphics and easy to play. Would be cool if it was a little longer. Nice job!

Thanks for playing!

I always find it astonishing what some folks can do with PICO8... this is awesome

Just wanted to pop in and say I am having the same exact issue running a LOVE2D game in Firefox that was transpiled via Love.js.

EDIT: In case it's useful, here is the game where I am having the same issue (loads fine in Chrome and Chromium browsers but not Firefox/Safari) - https://elennick.itch.io/httpselennickitchiosuper-moonshot-adventure

Love2d

really late update here but i wanted to let you know I used some of these assets in the Github Gameoff 2018 gamejam... you can see here if you're interested - https://elennick.itch.io/lua-n0va

All fair points, thanks for the feedback!
