Polished feel and a great start to what could be a very interesting RPG!

I enjoyed this game very much! It gave me retro vibes and I found a very interesting character design, as well as enjoyed the simplicity of the gameplay and at the same time the variability. Good job! :) I think it should get more votes.

Just curious: is there any feature you had to romote due to time constraints or other limitations (aside from the "cool transitions" XD)? I opened a topic called "The Features Cemetery" and would love to get your input there!

Hi there! We had planned more levels and actually the real ending was an image with a preview of the future additions to the game (enemies and bosses) Plus we wanted to have chests with objects that let you unlock the abilities. But because of time we didnt do that, also we had a BIG issue with a branch in github that kinda destroyed the project 3 days before the deadline, so we had to focus on fixing everything (hence that second level bug).

Oh, this game gives me a lot of retro jrpg games!

It looks quite polished, but it has a few little things that make the experience less exciting.

  1. I stuck at the first screen for some time, pressing Space, Enter, clicking the start button. I’ve read the instructions, but I thought that J was only an in-game thing, like you press E for interactions in games, but you rarely use it to activate a button like “new game”. A text like “Press J to start” would help me out there.

  2. I couldn’t get pass the first zone. I got stuck in the wall after collecting the second key in the first section of the game. :(

I’ll try this game out again to see what else it has to offer, but I’ll continue with my thoughts nonetheless.

  1. I don’t know if we get a new party member after that section or not, but I’m not sure guard action function is clear to the player. In most games, guard is only useful for a party, so a weakened (and focused) party member could survive while the other members are trying to save them. If the game has a single party member, the guard feature may not have an intuitive usage.

  2. The first 10+ battles are quite simple and repetitive. This is not a show stopper for a game of this genre, especially for a game jam, but it would be much easier to handle with a faster battle loop (faster start and finish sequences). I think I managed to beat everyone with a simple shoot-until-they die tactic without using anything else (I don’t think that I reloaded once, even with 3 enemies).

  3. The in-game UI is quite good for a jam game! The only extra touch I was missing is something like a tip saying what you’re hovering above. This would help me to understand the stats, for instance. I don’t need the numbers/etc, but knowing that it’s “power” or “defense” would be helpful. I ended up increasing everything by 1 point because it wasn’t clear what I’m doing here. :D You could partially solve this issue by providing a mini manual on the game page (like list the stats with their icons, names, and mechanics).x

With that being said, I’m going to give it another go because I like RPG games. :D

Also, please describe what was your core idea with this one? It’s hard to design an RPG game, so I’m interested to know what you were trying to build (like what are the main ideas behind the game).

I got to a second level, but the game crashed when I entered a boss (?) battle.

By the way, I maxed the bomb skill near the beginning of the game and it carried me along up until this crash. It 1-hits everything on the screen and there is no need to ever do anything else during the combat as enemies never get their turn. :)

Hi, thank you for your feedback, is really important for us! We had a big issue 3 days before the deadline and it really messed up the base code, to the point that some bugs (the second level bug) appeared, We are working on expanding the game a little bit more and actually finishing it with more more levels. But we will keep in mind your feedback ;)

And to answer your question, to be honest we wanted to do a game inspired on the game "Epic Battle Fantasy", plus we have never done a rpg, small or big, so this is our first take on this genre, we love experimenting with ideas, so we kinda went wild with this last game of the year :).

Again, thank you for you feedback, once we can re upload a new build, we will!

Oh, this is quite a good first entry for an RPG!

Very, very interesting. I think with a slight improvement in the level design, it would be perfect. But a lot of work and very well done. Congratulations!

The 2.5D graphics were nice. I like the subtle camera wobble on movement. Good work.

You really made a nice looking game! Had a laugh with the transitions haha

Great game, cool graphical implementation, gameplay is well done too (although I always took the triple shot because it didn’t consume ammo and killed every enemy instantly. I couldn’t enter level three because the enemy in front of the door crashed the game. However, it doesn’t affect my rating. Well done!!

Really liked the look of the game and the audio design/music. Like the theme! Good job!

As Magn said the game right now is too easy, and i saw the same bug in the boss battle on the second floor. But the game is nice, visually dynamic, the music fits well... a solid base to build upon!

The game worked very well until I reached the final boss on the second level and it crashed (see below). Anyway, the graphics were cool and the sound fitted well to the dungeon theme. As an RPG there is not much progress taking place, which is a major drawback. There are no weapons, treasures, potions etc. to pick up. The only attack I used was triple shot and it worked on all monsters. I didn't die once. The game is too easy right now.  Anyway, great job!

Here is the error I got.

Thank you for your feedback, we had a MAJOR issue one day before the deadline and we had to solve it, probably thats the reason some things dont feel quite there, that issue really messed us, but thank you! we will take some time to polish this game even more to have it in a better state :) i appreciate your post! Have a nice december.

Love the transitions, so cool!! I’m really impressed by this game, the controls are easy to understand and there’s a really impressive depth to the skills mechanics. Love the art style as well. Well done.
