Really cool concept and aesthetic! Others have mentioned this already but the enemy AI is wayyy too accurate, can barely get a shot in edgewise before getting killed.
I dunno why this bugs me but the scale of the cabinets is too skinny, and I know the dial-up sfx are probably a nostalgia blast for some people but all I can think is why on Earth would an arcade game make a modem noise-
Those last 2 are just imho of course :D
Thanks for your feedback. We definitely could have fine-tuned the difficulty better and we'll be patching it soon if you want to check it out.
As for the arcade cabinets, it was really hard finding good, free arcade cabinets online that actually worked in Unreal within our time frame so that's the best we could find during the jam. I can probably tweak them a bit.
And the modem sound for an arcade machine — I'll have to come up for a lore explanation for it. ;)
A really fun idea and the setup to the 3D version of the game was neatly done.
I'm not sure how to survive in the main part of the game, I had a terrible time trying to avoid the enemy shots, generally I'd get to one health restore power up and not make it further than that. From what I could tell that was about one fourth of the way through the level.
A 'skip' ability once you've been immersed into the game already would be nice, since what you do on the 2D cabinet doesn't appear to affect anything in the 3D version. Making it have an effect and switching between the two modes is an idea, but in a game jam time frame I wouldn't have suggested going for it. :D
Thanks for the feedback! Yes we will probably release another version after the game jam and scale down the difficulty.
As for the 2D version having some impact on the 3D version, that was an original plan, the 10 day time frame suggested otherwise.
We may try to finish out our original idea with this in the near future. Thanks for checking it out!!!
Really cool game!! Love the idea of transitioning from a 2D game into a 3D version of it! Had a great time destroying some space ships!
Theme, aesthetics and sound where all on point! I really wanted to do something similar at the beginning of the jam like you did with the arcade cabinet but I went in a different direction. My potato of a pc could only run this bad boy at around 15 - 20 fps so I think I may need to pickup an new graphics card. Great Job!
Great submission. It was an ambitious idea, but you managed to pull it off. Although the game was fun, the combat felt a little off; enemies have high accuracy, while you can't shoot them well.
Good work!
Thanks! This is really helpful feedback. We'll be patching it soon to fine-tune the difficulty. The scope of the game made it hard to focus on that aspect.
Impressive graphics! I have to admit the 2D minigame was cool the first time but I wish there was a way to skip it after.
It might be a skill issue on my part, but I also found the enemy's accuracy too high. I couldn't get hits in without taking damage as well. Great job :D
I love space games. You have made an exciting game. I played with great pleasure.
Thank you!
Very cool vibes, love that you play the game on an arcade machine in game, and that transition from the 2d game to the 3d one was very well done!
Thank you so much! I had a lot of fun making the transition and Aaron did as well. We both worked on different aspects and really tried to focus on that the most because of how crucial it was. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it! We'll be sure to check out your game tomorrow!
That was a lot of fun, I loved the retro arcade vibe at the beginning! The 3D shooter controls felt really solid and smooth, and the graphics looked great. Well done!
Thanks for checking it out!
My computer could barely run this, admittedly I have some aging hardware in here, but I probably got about 10-15 FPS. From what I could tell, it seemed like a solid on-rails shooter though. Would love to see that genre make a little renaissance.
Sorry to hear about the performance issues. We were able to test with a GTX 970 and were getting ~30FPS. We did as much optimizing as we could in the short time. Thank you for trying out the game!
Nostalgia hit!
Thanks! Using the dial up sounds had a Nostalgia hit for me.
A kind of "Arcade Paradise", I love it and you could go more far on this concept. Lot work for 2 games already. Well done !
Thank you for the feedback!
I love the game within the game within the game :) The transitions were very well done and great fit for the theme.
Thanks so much! We were terrified of this idea because of the massive scope but once we thought of it we had to do it! It was definitely a lot more complicated than we anticipated. We'd love to check out your game and we'll be sure to vote on it of course. Cheers!
nice game idea D that's a great mechanic and fun. would you try out mine and rate it according.
Thanks for playing! Yes I will play through your game and rate it tonight!
alright D please take your time.
Just rated your submission :)
Thank you :D
Great game! Had me going there for a bit at the start when you switch between the games, was a fun and cool surprise! Awesome concept!
Glad you enjoyed it! We were super excited to try the concept out. It was a technical nightmare but we feel it was worth it! We'll be sure to check out and rate your game. :)
Very well-executed concept, and very good use of your assets. Game was tough, but managed to get to 700 after a few tries. Very high marks for this entry!
This didn't effect my enjoyment, but just so you know you've got a minor glitch: your and the enemy's bullets behave differently at different framerates (play the game with your laptop unplugged and you'll see what I mean). You might be aware of this, but all you have to do to patch this out is make sure you multiply your bullet's speed by delta.time.
Thanks for pointing this out, it is greatly appreciated. I will get this fixed tonight and upload a fixed version. Thanks again!
nice concept, simple yet fun mechanic. The 3d space plane reminds me of star wars death star trench xD. Nice job for completing the game!
Thanks for playing. I will be playing and rating your game tonight
