So I read "test your quick reflexes and strategic thinking" and immediately thought that I would do very badly at this game. And I was right! I tried a couple of times on keyboard and I just couldn't push the right buttons fast enough, no matter how frantically I tried.
I'm guessing the easy way to "break" the game is push every button all the time which is what I did on a gamepad and managed to get a clean run. With the speed that the asteroids rain down, I don't think I could possibly win if that wasn't an option. But for someone better than me who wants a challenge, it would probably work to put some sort of global Energy/Power meter in. Every gun pulls from this single resource, so you can't have all of them active at the same time and firing too much too quickly (which is to say, shooting a gun that doesn't have a legitimate target) will leave the player with too little juice to stop an incoming threat in time.
Gameplay aside, the presentation is nice, I like the graphics and the sounds (even if the description page downplays the sound effects). The inclusion of a tutorial is nice, one thing about that is it would be nice to have a Continue/Next button so that the player isn't waiting for the next bit of text to appear once they're ready to progress and also doesn't miss any text when it disappears before they've finished reading it.
Also, great job including controls for keyboard and gamepad and allowing remapping. All very nice details that are difficult to fit into the confines of a game jam time limit.
A really good game. i needed a few runs to get it. well made and the first game i played in this jam which is not a run through. Thanks
It's a cool and unique concept and the game's design is well polished, I've specially loved the interactive tutorial.
When playing i got to understand what the tutorial meant with the screens, and I feel like the way it is right now it's too chaotic as other users have said, so i'll put an example of a different approach that i think could work just as an example: You have a total of 12 screens maximum, each one being a sector. You could split it into three game stages, where you'd control up to 4 on each. With the same mechanic inside where over time you unlock a new screen, but up to 4 in each of the 3 stages. This would allow the player to focus better and the game would also last longer.
I hope this helps, cheers ;)
That was chaotic! I loved the aesthetic but don't think I was very good at it haha
Wow that was a very unique game I can say I haven't played anything quite like that! The soundtrack was fantastic and really fit the spacey, world is ending vibe. I agree with several of the other comments that the number of screens is well dialed in to make for an engaging but not completely overwhelming experience.
I have to confess that on my first playthrough (even after completing your really well-done tutorial) I somehow thought I needed to aim the cannons on each screen with my mouse and I was like "this game is absolutely impossible!" Haha but on my second playthrough I quickly realized I needed to focus only on the keys which was more than enough to keep me busy :D
Very fun game!
the number of screens was decided because 12 is the buttons on a standard gamepad, and also it is 3 rows of keyboard keys for each finger. At the start we considered making this a typing game, in which to shoot asteroids in the right order you needed to type specific words, but that seemed less fun and chaotic, and was also kinda hard to make possible for different keyboard layouts, and definitely for pad.
Really liked it, so interesting with having to press the multiple keys. Love the concept, how it looks, and just overall, great job on this, it's awesome!
Personally, I had a lot of fun with the concept! I think it was the perfect amount of stressful, and the displays looked beautiful. Soundtrack was A+, great job on this one guys!
This was a lot of fun!
My three takeaways:
1) Really appreciate the custom soundtrack, I know that is always a lot of work to go down that route but nice work by A_squirrel
2) The layout of the monitors and just balancing having to look at all of them was fun! I felt like I was in the war room of Doctor Strangelove or something. It was really cool especially with the visual effects of the monitors looking like actual retro monitors.
3) I actually didn't feel bad about losing sectors because once I was down to my final four or so I could just focus on those. Of course I would like to improve at the game and be able to save all 12 but at the same time I like how the game doesn't overly punish you for losing sectors.
Really fun game! Great work!
It is a really neat idea, that creates a hectic and engaging gameplay loop. Congrats!
Enjoyed the game. Looks great, nice aesthetic. Nice job! I, too, was doing the jam while working a full-time job, and know what you mean about wanting to add and fix things. Never enough time no matter how long the jam.
Cool game, well executed. The aesthetics are great, fits the purpose very well. I really liked the multiscreen approach but still "easy" to controll. Well done! I totally understand your pain developing a jam game afterwork, this is what we did as well :D
If you have time, I would really like to hear your thoughts on our game and get your rating ;)
Neat idea! I think the coloured wireframe aesthetic suits this very nicely.
wow! This is unique. I Like the Concept and the Game Design. The music is fitting and the Tutorial is nice. Well Done!
HA, the ramp up of screens happened so fast, it was chaos, fun chaos.
the intro tutorial, well done. also cool concept and unique gameplay as well.
Cool game! Enjoyed the concept and gameplay.
This game is amazing! I really loved it, espacially the art and drawings, the ui is so compatible!
I liked the tutotial too, I can assure you put so much effort on that tuto :)
Great job!
