Great job! I'm not particularly a fan of horror games. However, I totally understand the difficulty of creating the right atmosphere. Honestly, I loved the aesthetic style and I'm amazed by the work done for the Jam. Congratulations!

I particularly enjoy horror games, so this was a real treat to find in the submissions :D I loved running from the angel of death and the jump scare when it grinds your bones to dust was terrifying! I saw in your game page that you created all the visuals yourself which is amazing given the timeframe of the jam. I really liked the retro feel of them and the blurred overall atmosphere made the game feel eerie.

Really nice work!

Like that specific look for your game and the atmosphere works really well from the visuals and visual style, and the gameplay fits well too, very nice job on the game!

Developer

Thanks!

Nice visuals and atmosphere. I miss some music to be totally in this.

Developer

I heard this a few times now which I find odd since I don’t mind the silence. I think I should’ve put in more ambience in the background though, I wonder if that would be a good substitute for music? Either way, thanks for the feedback, this is why it’s good to get other people’s opinions.

really cool game, loved the aesthetic and would love to explore more of the world if you know what I mean. If you're interested in adding other music in I'd love to send a track your way. Nothing crazy I was just vibing with the game! Let me know if you're interested I did the music for my game, but can also do creepy/dark

Developer

Hmm, I don’t plan on doing much more with the game in the foreseeable future, probably move on to other things is what I was thinking. So yeah, I feel like it would make your work go to waste.

Pretty cool game I like it, really gives me nostalgia playing computer games like this as a teenager. Really good job. I played this on my youtube and gave my reaction while playing if you want you can see it here

Developer

Appreciate it! I love seeing recordings, it’s very useful. It’s definitely more of a “nostalgia style”. I wish I had the skills to do it in 3D, but I feel like it’s difficult to achieve a similar look even if I had those skills.

Submitted

I think you nailed that look and feel perfectly

Submitted(+1)

Love the art, really cool submission. Well done.

Developer

Thanks for playing again! I saw the recording and it was very useful.

Submitted(+1)

so cool, how did you made the jumpscare?

you put on the camera so it will always face the player camera?

Developer(+1)

I used some vector math to lerp them in front. Then I lerped them (but faster) right in front of their face. All done in a sipmle coroutine.

Submitted

I will try, thx for the advice

Submitted(+1)

Haha, bonus points for the commitment to jim. I think you might have forgot to loop the music, it stops playing afer a while for me (or could be my browser lol)

Developer

Oh, the ending? That’s true lol although the game is supposed end at the point so should be fine.

Thanks for playing and reaching the end!

Really great vibe and visuals! Super cool!

love what you did with the visuals. the atmosphere fits so well and looks so great.
At first I just died
second I kept running around like a madman
third I interacted with chalice and started collecting mushrooms
fourth I thought it was a speedrun to collect all
fifth collected them all nothing happened
sixth figured out salt is throwable
seventh collected all mushrooms and kept using salt until I was out.
eighth figured out to bring the mushrooms back and then collect apples
ninth figured the apples were on trees.
So yes I died a lot of times before actually finishing it.
love the effect how the sky clears out.

Developer

Thanks for playing! I did want people to figure out things by themselves, but I’m confliced because I also don’t want it to be annoying. Not sure which one it was for you, but I do think this type of game would require more iteration. And more experience on my part probably.

Not much just a little indication could work, for a game jam it is perfect. but if you plan on expanding  further upon it, some highlighting of the go to location or perhaps a voice telling you what to do. Don't get me wrong I had fun going through it again and again and figuring out what to do by myself. was just sharing the experience I had while playing it. :)

Great art style, well done ! The pacing is good too, the monsters create tension but aren't so fast as to catch you so often that it become frustrating. My only minor criticism is that the worms don't change a lot when they're shot and take some time to disapear so at first I thought that I needed 2 doses of salt to kill them.

Developer (1 edit)

Glad you enjoyed it!

Yeah, clarity is probably my weakness here. Honestly, my first time trying something like this. Not sure how to balance mysteriousness with confusion. Probably a matter of playtesting more and trying out things.

Submitted(+1)

Love the art style, reminds me of Doom. Good job!

Cool! It gave me goosebumps. Collected all mushrooms, then what? Run out of salt eventually.

Developer(+1)

Ah, you’re supposed to bring them back to the chalice! Sorry for the lack of clarity.

Submitted(+1)

Ok, I will give it a try tonight.

Submitted(+1)

Yes, ok, I reached the end after a couple more tries. :-)

Submitted(+1)

That first angle made me jump!

It was the right amount of frustration for a horror game and made me want to finish it.

The upside-down crosses for the outside barrier was a nice touch.

Submitted(+1)

So the first thing I did was turn around. I saw a friendly angel behind me! I ran toward them and... my bones were ground to dust. Okay, lesson learned!

The second time I was careless with my salt use and ran out.

The third time I succeeded in this strange, apple ceremony!

I liked the grainy effect during the night time, it helped with the spooky atmosphere. I do think 'spooky' is the term to use, rather than a more traditional horror game. It was tense to complete the ritual without getting dusted bones, but it's not what I would consider to be a creepy or unsettling game. (Which is fine by me!) I also really like the post-game music. And the levity of the text compared to the darker tone of the gameplay.

I also appreciate all the tips on the game page, I would have had a lot more trouble without them!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thanks for playing!

Glad the tips helped, I did get the feeling that it might be a bit too confusing. I didn’t really have time to playtest with actual people, so I just wrote the instructions down.

And yeah, making it horror was never really the intention. But one thing lead to another, it just fit so well to make it more horrory (probably not an actual word). So I’m also more than fine with the amount of intensity it is. I get too scared to play actual horror games myself lol

EDIT: now that I think about it, I should’ve just pasted the instructions in side the game…

You'll know for next time! :D

BEAUTIFUL AESTHETIC I LOVED EVERY BIT OF THIS GAME!!!

I would just suggest increasing the stun duration on enemies, that's all :D

Developer

THANK YOU! lol

The salt stuns the angel for 5 seconds, which I feel like is enough. You’re supposed to kil the larva with it, which I think I wasn’t super clear about, sorry.

Submitted(+1)

Really liked the Aesthetics of the game, the camera effect on the game was nice. Mechanically though the game felt misleading in places, the initial statement and the despawn of the "angel" for reaching the altar makes it seem like a safe place in general which obviously isn't the case, and the salt felt far too weak for the amount you get. Additionally when you reach the end you can still die and get the game over message despite being unable to defend yourself. As a whole the entry feels like a really nice base which could be built up to make for an interesting light horror game

Developer

Just making sure, but did you manage to press E on the altar? It should get rid of the angel and go into the next phase. The salt is more so for the larva.

Yeah, clarity about what to do is something I was concerned about. Definitely could’ve done a better job guiding the player. I think I should’ve add the “Press E” info on the screen instead of on the objects.

Submitted

I did, and it despawned the angel, but I then ran straight off to find the shrooms, when there was lots of the other enemy, I tried to run back to the altar assuming it was a generic safe zone, using what the start taught me, just to die anyway,
