Very nice pinball with a nice integration of the theme ! Too bad the gameboy resolution is not respected, but nice graphics by the way.

Developer

Thanks for playing!

Cheers on the compliment for the graphics, even if they don't look very gameboy-ish. The resolution was set in accordance with the rules as I understood them, you can see my discussions with others on this note below,

Fun game it was chill to just play some good old pinball I got a score of over a million.

Developer

Pinball wizard! Glad you had a fun and chill time. Thanks for playing :)

Lovely game. I don’t see many pinball games in game jams, a nice surprise. Feels better to play than some actual pinball games on the gameboy. I don’t know what caused it, but the pinball loading mechanism dissapeared for me at the side of the screen after a few shots on my second play. It still worked like normal, it just didnt display on the screen. Not a big issue, but just to be aware of.

Developer

Thank you. Pokémon pinball was a game with a lot of nostalgia for me, so that was the main inspiration to try something like this.

I appreciate you letting me know about the visual bug, if I do a post-game jam refinement of this project I will now be on the lookout to fix that. Thank you for the comments and for playing :)

That was fun! The art has a nice saturated look to it. My main criticism is that the ball seems to have a lot of friction; it especially didn't like going up the fuel slides.

Also, the resolution seems to be too large.

Good work!

Developer(+1)

Glad you found it fun.

Getting the ball to work properly on the ramps was, gameplay wise, the most time intensive challenge of making this game. I agree that I didn't nail that part.

You can see below my conversation with dwhiffing who also had concerns about the game size. To summarize, it is 160x144 natively in engine and scaled to be 8 times larger, which was in line with the rules as I understood them. Since the sprites have no issue going "in between" pixels the result is that the game ends up feeling like its resolution is 1280x1152, which is something I will keep in mind for next year.

Having the game able to be re-sized or only scaled this large if the player wants to might have helped but didn't have time to implement that.

Thank you, I'm happy with how it came out for the most part :)

Pretty cool game. I really liked the palette color that you used, it matched well with the theme and the sprites. Probably was tough to implement the ball`s pyshcys, but it worked fine.

Suggestions for a possibly post-jam version:

* Set the screen a little bit smaller, at least on my computer the screen was way too big.

* Make the background more dynamic, maybe a commet passing by would be enough.

Congratulations for your game, you shall be proud of it.

Developer(+1)

You're right on that the background could be better. The original idea was to have a scrolling starfield but I settled for a static parallax to save time.

Thanks for checking it out :)

Very fun game, such a throwback!

So many submissions are incredibly nostalgic, that is for sure. Thanks for playing :)

One of my favorite pinball games! :D

Developer

Very kind of you to say! Thanks for playing :)

Solid entry, I actually had a lot of fun playing this. The gravity on the ball feels pretty good and the difficulty seems very fair.

Developer

Thank you! I did a lot of tweaking to try to get game feel right, I'm glad I got at least in the right ballpark :)

Nice Game! The window is actually big for once! I enjoyed it a lot :D

Only advice is turn down soundtrack a bit but that is just personal preference.

Developer

Yeah the sound kind of comes in hard off the jump, doesn't it?

Thanks for taking the time to play it and I'm glad it was enjoyed :)

I love Pinball games but can’t figure it out. which button is A (for holding) on the keyboard?

Developer

The right flipper button, so D. I will add a note on the page, thank you for pointing that out.

It looks and plays awesome! Love the graphics and the sound.  I think your game isn't technically 160x144, but it still feels retro.  Pinball fans unite!

Developer

It is natively 160x144 in engine and visually scaled 8x bigger for modern monitors, so 1280 x 1152  :)

Submitted(+1)

understood, but your physics engine is rotating things in ways that wouldnt be possible on a Gameboy. You'll notice it most clearly on your asteroid sprite.  It rotates smoothly rather than being locked down to the resolution of the Gameboy. I used a sprite sheet of different angles to have a rotating ball without breaking this rule for example.

This is a common oversight with low rez game jams though, people often use opacity and break the color pallette rule as well.

Developer

Oh definitely, I did a bunch of research on how gameboy graphics are rendered and nothing about how the individual sprites work in my game is compatible. Since it wasn't in the requirements for the jam I didn't ever even consider trying to accomplish that. Your game is FAR more authentic than mine.

Submitted (2 edits) (+1)

It is technically in the requirements, it's just often misunderstood what the requirement is.  Your game isn't upscaled from a gameboy resolution, it's using a modern resolution with sprites that are low resolution.  It matches the aspect ratio, but you aren't just doubling the existing pixels to get the result. The rules are trying to say this with the examples they provide, but they could be clearer.

I don't mean any of this to criticize but to clarify what the restrictions are. I just think since the resolution is the primary restriction it goes against the spirit of the jam to interpret it this way.

I appreciate you saying my game is authentic and I don't intend this to be an attack of authenticity :)

Developer

I see! Then I definitely misunderstood the requirements, I thought as long as the viewport was 160 by 144 with 4 colors that was all I had to concern myself with.

To your point, I'll try to keep that in mind for next year and see what I can do with the proper constraints.

No offence taken, thanks for clarifying. :)

I'm excited to see what you come up with! So many amazing entries this year
