I like this, hella ambitious for a jam but not half bad. Your art and sound was exquisite, it's what caught my attention initially. I had some issues getting the cards in their places (it gave me timer anxiety lol) but when I did get them in the right place right time I felt glorious. I had issues distinguishing the numbers on the cards. It was a bit heavy on the text for my taste initially, I think you could cut some of that down. If you peppered in some background music and some light voice acting this would be a really solid game. All in all really well done (:
If you could give ours a play I would appreciate it!
Really great art style! I liked the idea too, it feels like the idea was very ambitious for a jam but you handled it very well, and I can see it becoming a full game after the jam because it has a lot of potential!
I really enjoyed this game, it gave me a "The Yawhg" vibe, and the art and writing were fantastic! I'd love their to be a bit more complexity involved, maybe certain cards interact with other cards, so if one card "plays" before another card, it doubles the damage, or halves it. It would make the player have to work harder to decide their optimum route, and it would make the randomly playing cards impact the game more.
Hi! That was exactly the plan, like having a "hull breach" card do hull damage every turn until fixed with a "hull repairs" card and stuff like that (or having a Kraken be countered only by a Harpoon). Unfortunately the jam meant we didn't have time to implement any of the more advanced functions, so it ended up just being the simple stats up/down. However in our Upcoming Post-Jam Version we'll definitely include some more complex interactions! And thanks!
I really want to like this game, the presentation is great! But I kept running into my cards randomly changing beneath me - I would flip 'em, check 'em, place 'em, and then when it got to the game they would suddenly be completely different cards?
So my planning to have 2 +5 welds against a -2 completely flipped on me to different cards and I have no idea why. If the cards were a list of "here's what random things they could be", or if the sea ones changed (your flotilla ones staying the same) I'd be happier, but as it stands it feels like my time spent planning isn't worth it.
Heya! Argh, how annoying! So just to check, the mechanic is supposed to be like this:
8 cards are placed down (flipped randomly flotilla/ocean) at the start. You can flip them with right click, and drag them down ("out" of the screen) to pick them. You know they've been picked when the 'big' card disappears and is replaced with the 'small' UI card. You can only pick things by dragging them if they're flipped to the correct side, so if you drag an ocean card down to your hand it won't be picked and vice versa (flotilla to ocean hand).
Technically it's not necessary to be able to give the ocean cards, since it will simply take whatever's left (flipped to ocean side) when you've taken your 4 cards - this is a leftover from when we were thinking of having a 'tide' mechanic that drags cards around to increase the chaos (alas, no time). Just flipping the cards ocean/flotilla and letting the timer end will lead to a situation where the cards are assigned randomly (although this could probably be an alternative way of making the selection - wouldn't be hard to code!). So maybe that's what you've been doing?
Or then it's a bug :(
Ohhh I see! I thought I just had to drag them vaguely near the edge of the screen. I was wondering why they weren't filling the card spaces when I was moving them. I'll try again and let you know if it's me or a ghost in the machine fiddling with things 🔧
Great art and music!
Thank you! Our artists and sound guy are great!
Amazing idea !
Thanks!
Very good art, and I liked the concept. It would be great to see some visual effects during the "battle" itself, as there isn't anything for the player to do at this point. Some speedup in that part would also be nice.
Thanks! And yep, we had some stuff planned (little Krakens popping up! harpoons firing! smoke coming from the flotilla...) but y'know - jam.
I loved the flip mechanic! Made the choices interesting with the time pressure. I can definitely imagine playing a full game with a longer story like this. And the cards are so pretty! Great work.
Cheers, Laura
Thanks! We intended to make it become increasingly more difficult (shorter time, more cards) but alas, jam. And yes, the art is gorgeous! (not the artist ;)
the last day was pretty hype. I was like "hmm, there are a lot of good cards here," then i looked at the sea cards. way to go, fantastic entry.
Haha, thanks. Erm. Last day was meant to have a bit more variety, but at least we got to go out with a bang (and a lot of "graaarrr!")
Brilliantly done in my opinion. The art and sound design were top notch, the gameplay was both relaxing and tense. I managed to get through the entire game in my first try (although im not sure if this was intentional), but still had another go because why not?
As for things to change, I really have no complaints, overall, an excellent entry!
Thank you so much! We unfortunately didn't have a lot of time to fine-tune the challenge, so in the end it tended towards the too-easy side of the spectrum (maybe better than too hard? not sure). Our sound designer was great - this was his first jam game!
Some of the best art I have seen in the jam! I would love to see this card game expanded upon so that there is more for me to do as the player, while maintaining the strong theme of out of control seas. Great job!
Out of control was a really difficult theme to make work in a game (which is usually all about control). We were thinking of having more cascading events and such, but alas we didn't have tiiiime. Later!
The ability to flip cards surprised me and I feel like it gives your choices more value. Well done!
Thanks! Partially a decision for space reasons (can only fit so many cards on one screen) :D
Cool, so you managed to kill 2 birds with one stone then! :)
I love the artstyle and the illustrations, its super clean
Thanks! Yes, also in love with the art here :O Check the credits for our awesome artistssss
Good structure and nice art. You could do alot with it.
Thanks! We do hope to expand it a bit once voting is done etc. :)
the gameplay is amazing. I really enjoyed playing your game.
nice game RATED!
DON''T FORGET TO PLAY MINE! : https://itch.io/jam/gmtk-2020/rate/698144
Thanks!
Decent game, wish there were more random effects, and the play animations were faster
Thanks! I've also been told the play animations are too slow (no time to read). Maybe the best would be manually clicking away cards after they're played, hmm...
Really beautiful game and presentation. The theme interpretation is simple and it gets a bit repetitive later on.
It could be the base for an enjoyable mobile game.
Thanks! We were planning on having a much more complex card game as well as a minigame in the draft phase (when you pick your 'salvage') but you know...jam ;)
Love the aesthetic and graphics :)
Thanks! And I agree, the cards are little works of art aren't they!
looks great. a little hard to play though
Thanks! Was there some particular issue with the controls? The dragging can be a little buggy, alas.
I don't know how to play the game even after the tutorial
So on the beach, you have 60 seconds to pick cards, "salvage". Each card has two sides - an Ocean (blue) and a Flotilla (orange) side, you can flip them with your right mouse button. Drag a Flotilla card down to your hand to select it, or an Ocean card up to 'give' it to the Ocean. Any cards you don't pick within the time limit are assigned randomly, as are any remaining cards once you or the ocean have 4 cards in hand. After that they are played in random order. So you have control over the draft phase (getting cards) but not the play stage. The goal is to keep your 4 stats above 0 until day 8!
this makes a lot more sense
