I'm so happy you liked it! I will check out your game right now.

Nice map, reminds me of atomic zombie smasher

Developer

Yeah kinda. We could make the red squares zombies. I don't know if it makes sense to turn zombies back into regular people when you shoot them though. I wanted to make the red squares something different when I polished the game. You gave me something to think about! Thank you!

really cool concept & a solid execution. i found it pretty hard to actually get through a level, but it still was a lot of fun! i also really enjoyed the sound design :D great job!

Developer(+1)

Yeah it is definitely on the harder side. Maybe I should add hard, medium, and easy modes to tailor the experience to the player. Thanks for trying it out and the great feedback!

Submitted

Really liked the concept, and seeing all the squares around me turn red was terrifying.

Developer

Yeah it freaks me out too when they do it so suddenly. Thanks for playing!

Congrats on finishing a game! I'm really only gonna focus on the things I didn't really enjoy, because those are the ones I can critique, but overall I enjoyed playing it!

I feel like the movement was a bit rough (sometimes my character would appear to be stuck on nothing) and the random movement of the NPCs felt unfair (sometimes, an infected person would turn around without warning and infect me).

Despite all that, I think this idea has great potential, and I'd love to see a more polished version of it!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback! I agree that colliders need to be polished a little more so I'll work on that. For the NPC movement though, it is totally random where they move. Do you think I should add a visual indicator of where they are going to start moving? I didn't want to make it too predictable though because I wanted the player to create space between itself and others and be ready for anything. Anyway, I'm so happy for the great criticism and that you enjoyed it!

Submitted

I'm not sure how I'd fix the NPC movement, personally. Maybe instead of snapping to the new direction they could smoothly rotate to it instead? That way it'd still be unpredictable, but it'd give the player some time to react. Not sure how it'd work in practice though!

Nice game and cool concept !

Developer

Thanks so much!

This game was so amazing! I loved the ending and even after finishing I waited until I turned everyone green..

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing and commenting! Your comment means sooooo much. Yeah I really like looking at the islands from far away while the infection spread so I made sure to zoom out for the ending so you can see the bigger picture.

Congrats for making a full working game :)
I like the idea of spreading infection, the way it is presented here may be a bit rough but it works as a proof of concept. I think I would have like it more if it was slower, like really slow, and it was more of a creepy horror action game where you can suddenly find a nest of infected people that is threatening to spread everywhere. But yeah that would be a totally different feel, here it is more like a bullet hell fast paced type of game.

The fx are simple but get the job done, which is important in a jam, same goes for the gaphics.

The music can get a bit annoying, my advice here would be: if you don't have time to craft a well written piece of music, it is better to have just a chord progession and no melody than the other way around.

On the game feel other comments have pointed you to useful resources, I just want to point out a minor issue with the camera: when you collide with something it jitters a lot, which I think is due to your code making the camera just following instantly the player position, this is pretty easy to avoid and you can find many post about that on Unity forums.

Developer

Thanks for the detailed feedback! I'm so grateful for the effort you put into your comment. I wasn't really aware of camera code to make it not jitter so I'm so glad you brought that up. Never really thought about it before. I have one question though: for a fast paced game like this, is it still best to do a chord progression for fast paced music? I know its great for slow music but I didn't really know how to do it fast paced. I'm not really good at music so any tips would be so helpful. Thanks again!

Submitted

You can still make the music fast paced with a simple chord progression and a groovy beat, I'd even argue tha's easier to start with that than with the melody ^^ My point is that writing melody first is more difficult and can lead you to write something that will get annoying pretty  fast, especially if you don't have great music librabries to make it sound good.

I played on your other link~  I like the sound effects! Did you record them?  Very cool idea and a fun little topdown shooter!  Congrats on submitting a game to the jam~ Please check out my game if you haven't :D

Developer

Yeah we recorded those sound effects during the jam. We made it with our voices so it was so funny to hear out own voices every time you did something in the game. Thanks for playing it and I'll make sure to check your game out!

Developer

I feel like I see you in the comments for a lot of other games. I think its cool your rating so many and giving actual feedback instead of copying and pasting responses like I see some other people do. How many games have you rated. Good job again on your own game!

Well done! I really enjoyed the simplicity and complexity of the game at the same time! Any plans for a follow-up game or a spin-off??

Developer

That's great you enjoyed it! There is definitely room for improvement for this game so I'm going to polish it up some more. I don't know if I'll make a sequel but maybe put more levels in this one. Anything you would like to see added?

Submitted

It was pretty fun. I like how it is a game and simulation of sorts at the same time.

Developer

Glad you enjoyed! I played your game as well, job well done!

Submitted

Nice game i really enjoyed it. I also rated it. Also if you could play and rate my game that would mean a lot :)

Developer

Yeah I will definitely play your game!

Submitted

I really liked the game, there is something about the top-down shoters that always attract me, I also love the FX sound, because it's a cool approach to solving problems in a simple way. Overall very good game. :)

Developer(+1)

A lot of those FX sounds where made with our voices. I found it hilarious when my voice was played every time someone was shot. Thanks for playing and commenting!

Submitted

What a good game! The idea is very nice, I love the visual art. You made a very good game. Keep creating games!

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you so much! It took so much out of me to make and I was completely exhausted by the end of it. It means a lot that you like it.

I had a good time playing this. Ended up playing longer than i thought even with the rough graphics. I think a "grace" period when you cure a cube would help the flow of game play and be less punishing.  When multiple cubes come at you it's pretty hard to stop because the bullets don't go past.  and they keep getting re-infected. Great job with the game!

Developer

Sometimes I like when multiple cubes come at you though. I think it feels good to get out of a tight spot. I understand what you mean though and I think a "grace" period is definitely something I should consider and test. Thanks for the great feedback!

Submitted

yeh, that's totally fair. I think if i had played a lot more i definitely would have got used to it and adapted my strategy! Balance is always the hardest thing in these jams!

Submitted

it was fun but the shooting mechanism felt too rough

Developer

Any ideas on how to make it better? This was the first top down shooter I have made.

Submitted

maybe a bit faster projectile, when shooting and moving on same direction makes it feel way too slower

Submitted

This is awesome. At first a bit hard, but when I got used to the controls it was really fun. The music was nice too.

Developer

Yeah it is definitely on the harder side. I have so many deaths on the second island when I play tested it.  I so happy you had fun!

SO much fun!!! I can't wait to find the door to level 4. It took me a few tries to pass the first few levels - highly addicting!!

Developer (1 edit)

I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Your comment means a lot.

Less than 24 hours, I'm here for a rematch!

Submitted

This game makes me go YES!

Developer

I'm so glad! Thanks for playing!

Submitted

Very unfortunate about the build. Concept is cool and I'd like to see it fleshed out!

Developer

Thanks! Do you have any ideas of how to improve for next jam? I really liked your tetris game.

Submitted

Yeah, I would say the weakest aspect of this jam would be game feel. This video goes over how to improve upon that, and there are a lot of tutorials to do the more technical things like screen shake.
