I think you're extremely close to an awesome idea.
Instead of it being a free moving platformer, make it a forced side scroller.
Add a drum track in the background.
Then design the levels such that if played efficiently, it will play a melody.
And score is evaluated based on how close the player was to hitting say, the nearest 16th note for any given jump or other action.
So its ALMOST like a rhythm game, but the melody is not predetermined, the player is just incentivized to play in a rhythm.
(maybe that will work)
Hm, I feel like doing that would pretty drastically change the original idea, however that's not necessarily a bad thing since as you say, this idea doesn't really work that well xD
Definitely interesting suggestions!
Nice idea, although I think it's really really really difficult for someone to create a "melody" while trying to reach the summit, and not a series of mismatching notes xD
yep that's the main reason I'm not really happy with my game (and nearly dropped out of the jam), the idea sounded cool on paper but didn't really work out in reality...
good game!!!
Really great idea! My music was awful, but i had fun. maybe the character could be a little more faster and the level less vertical.
thanks for the feedback!
Awesome concept! There's a lot more than can be done with this (maybe giving certain notes or patterns (gliss, chords, etc.) special abilities, or having a bass in the background that matches your pace), but for 48 hours u made something pretty neat
very true! At first the drums were the double jump but it didn't feel very good, maybe it would've worked with other abilities though... Thanks for playing!
Nice idea! Using a piano instead of a controller is not changing much gameplay, but it did use the theme in a graphical way.
Nice work :)
Super cool, I like how going left and right have nice complementary chords, especially if you add the extra notes. Intrinsically felt really enjoyable to me and it's funny to try and find a way to play that makes a nice song. Super fun!
Thanks!
really creative! although the platforming itself is short, attempting to make a better melody added a nice sense of replayability. great job!
yep that was the intention, making it short so that replayability won't be too tedious
Thanks for playing!
very music. love the idea
thanks AIA! :)
Gonna watch your stream vod now, unfortunately I went to sleep right when it started
This is such a creative game! Being able to hear what you played at the end was a nice touch that motivated me to play it again. I'm not very good at making music, but I managed to make something decent!
glad to hear you enjoyed!
Really cool idea, and it's so fun to play! I kinda got addicted to trying to make a sick beat while still making it decently far up, lol.
haha, that was the intention though I didn't think it would actually work!
This game idea has potential. Making music while platforming can be so cool. Unfortunately, it was too short, and the spacebar sound may have not been the best. However, this is a game jam, so this could be expanded into something way cooler.
it's intentionally short to allow you to replay and try to create better music without it becoming too tedious, but maybe people prefer longer levels 🤔
Also I agree the drum sound is really meh, I made it myself unlike the piano notes and it can be felt xD
Very creative! I really love the idea!
I love the idea! I kinda wish there was some sort of a background melody/metronome/drums to fet our music into. But this has so much potential and would be lovely to see more developed! The saving feature is also really cool! I enjoyed it very much and replayed it a few times to mess around. :)
That's a cool idea, thanks for the suggestion!
maybe instead of using the C,D,E,F,G,A , you could take a 6 note chord. Then change the chord used across levels, so some levels would feel sad and other happy, for example. That could make it more interesting! Or maybe using a tremolo effect for when the character walks, so it would emulate te sound of steps. Something like that could work. :D
whoa these are all really cool ideas! Idk if I'll continue to expand this game since it's not one of my better ones, but now you're getting me kinda hyped about doing it xD
Very creative, love the concept and the graphics
I wish the level design had a bit more of work however, very cool idea though!
Amazing presentation and concept, incredibly creative!
I made the best melody!
Great Presentation!
Thanks! :)
Lovely idea and oh my god kudos for the realization despite the short time given!
This game was really fun! I wished it was more fleshed out because the concept is great. I think that if you continue this project, you should make the levels more linear so that most players will create a melody that you set in place (for example, if in the level there's three jumps then turn around, then the player will do that, and it'll create a nice melody)
Drums where a nice addition, I had fun making tunes with them :)
Good luck in the jam!
interesting, I actually intentionally added multiple ways to beat the level so that players will be able to created varied melodies, but I guess if there had been more levels, having a general base melody for each would've worked well
Kinda fun to play around in, wish the keys were layed out differently
what layout would you have preferred? I might update it after the jam
I'm not exactly sure, I think it's just that the keys are placed weirdly for trying to make something musical. Maybe changing the intervals could help? Overall didn't quite click for me but I feel like it's close to being super fun.
Yeah I agree it can definitely be improved, I'll think about it!
