I love the art-style you went for here the apple is very cute and the music is really fitting! Was very spooky to play and a little bit hard at times, I think the game could benefit from some form of indicator so you aren’t always running directly towards the snek and also maybe a minimap to show where you have previously been while trying to find the ladder and such.
pretty solid game :]
This game is fun and has a great atmosphere. I loved the art work and the music/sound effects as they complimented the game well. A couple times I died even after making it to the ladder which was frustrating however overall a great game!
Glad you had fun! The art was my department and music was 3N_Music, check out his stuff for more! The ladder death bug was on our to-do list, but we ran out of time!
Nice atmosphere. I particularly liked the interesting chord progressions in the music.
Thanks! All the music was from 3N_Music, check out his other stuff!
Well, I will say that it is terrifying. That snake just goes for you.
Unfortunately there's a bug that kills you even after you escape if the snake is too close to you. so, yknow.
Oh yeah, the creepiness of the snake was a lot of fun to establish! I actually just discovered that bug myself a while ago, but after the submission period.
Good game :) The atmosphere is really nice and you implemented it nicely.
Good work :)
Thanks CreativeMouse! The atmosphere was a high priority, and thought that by considering how we wanted to feel we could create a better game. Thanks for the review
visibility thing made me jump scares when i see snake , Nice Concept , I enjoyed the levels and progressions.
I request you to kindly review my game also.
So happy you enjoyed our game! I checked out your game and left a comment!
A fellow snake-reverser! That was great - mildly terrifying haha! The sound of the snake's rattle alerting you that you're about to get rekt is awesome! Super cool, well done!
Your version is really cool too! How'd you do the pathfinding in yours?
It's super inefficient haha. Every frame I mark the positions of the player and snakes in a grid. Then at fixed intervals each snake head checks:
- Is the player in the next tile I'm headed toward -> keep going
- Otherwise if the next tile turning (left/right/straight) toward the player is safe -> turn in that direction
- Else pick the safest direction available (measured in # of empty tiles in a straight line)
It's not the smartest or the most efficient, but it's what I came up with and it kinda felt interesting to play against haha. I think it's good that it's not too smart. I had an even simpler version initially and I'm still not sure if making it smarter made it more fun 😆
I'm curious too, how did you approach your pathfinding? Is the rattle sound based on number of tiles away? It's so good! I also like your level design, my wife appreciated that there were no dead ends haha :)
I was more in charge of design and art, bartkk did most of the legwork on programming the snake, so that'd be a question for him.
Movement being synced with the snake makes it feel like crypt of the necrodancer which was cool. Losses were very punishing with the restart but was still very fun! Love the twist on snake
Super happy you enjoyed it!
Fun game, the snake is somehow cute and terrifying at the same time :D I am now imagining how this would look like as a first person horror game :D
So happy you liked it! You've got me imagining this first person horror where around the corner a snake twice your size locks onto you and the sheer panic of fleeing with haste.
Incredible art - love this project. Well done on this game, excellent work!!
Thanks so much! It was my first time doing art for a game, and frankly I still can't believe I did it all in the 48 hour time span.
I like that you mixed a horror game with snake and the letter tutorials are great! I just didn't like the crunchy movement very much and having to replay stages upon dying wasn't great.
Fun game (even though a little frustrating), pretty nice art and sfx. Good job! :)
Glad you enjoyed it! We didn't have enough time to tweak the movement before submission, but it was on the list of things to do. When trying to come up with the initial idea, I knew snake would be fun because everyone's played it, but I wasn't sure how to add a unique twist. Turns out horror fit pretty good and the soundtrack from @3N_Music created the perfect atmosphere!
Nice concept ! A little bit hard to understand at the beggining.
Thanks flugudu! We were considering how to do instructions for the game towards the end of the 48 hours and @Bartkk suggested we do the instructions as images, to avoid translation issues and the game could be played internationally. They were one of the last changes we made, but thanks for the critique! We'll keep it in mind when we can update the game again!
Generally an okay idea, but poor execution. I wish that the game communicated to you what and how stuff works, for example; I think that the spring shoes could’ve been communicated with a little audio/visual cue that indicated that the shoes did recharge, and the fact that the snake knows where are you at all times is kinda deal breaking. Because it can just come out of nowhere, and you’re not fast enough to outrun it.
Wish that the game was just executed better overall.
Sorry you didn't enjoy it! The spring shoes recharge certainly could have been communicated better, we simply ran out of time. The snake knowing where you are and relentlessly pursuing/coming out of nowhere was the idea, to give it more of a horror vibe, similar to Mr. X in Resident Evil. During playtesting, we found it too easy if the snake didn't follow at all times. It is also possible to outrun him, moving diagonally allows you to do so and the levels were built with loops so you could get around him. While the controls weren't perfect (again running out of time), we expected players to toy around with them as you would in any video game.
Love the 8bit music and the cute sprites! Fun game overall :)
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed our first game jam!
I didn't know this was going to be a horror game :). It is very good and atmospheric. I loved how all the game mechanics were explained as you went.
Thank you! I actually was thinking we use text, but our lead dev @Bartkk suggested that we use images to have tutorials, so it was internationally friendly!
Awesome game, the snake was terrifying! The player movement was a little clunky, but I still had fun playing!
Thanks Alexio! We were going to fix the movement up a bit but didn't have enough time. Glad you enjoyed it nonetheless!!!
I like the art a lot, especially the facial expressions of the apple and the tutorial scrolls. I think movement could be faster.
Thank you! All the art was done by me in Aseprite! Adjusting movement was something on our list, but we had to prioritize functionality towards the end of the jam.
Nice game! A lot of features also, feels populated, and the sensation of the snake coming is terryfing even though the game looks cute. Really cool
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed our first game jam game ;)
I'm glad that you kept the tile-by-tile movement like in classic snake, really nice job! And the "snake = *apple core*" on the piece of paper at the start had me laughing lol
Thanks! It was our first time doing a game jam so we're glad you enjoyed!
nother different way to control the food. I hope the game starts with a wider view.
