Art and sounds looking good. Good concept!

I was really proud when i read your comment about my graphics! Even if i made them in like 30 panicked minutes lol... And then i came here...And saw... How bad they are compared to yours!!! This is as pefect as pixel art can go in my opinion so fantastic job there!!! :))
I wish the music was yours, but at least i can say it was a perfect pick also! Ill nitpick since i really like the game and say, that only minor advice i have is to make the player hitbox smaller. Its a usual practice to make it harder to get hit than it should be since no player is objective and we all have that "BS that didnt hit me when it actually really did moment!". Appart from that very nice, and im really curious in what engine did you make your game? Since it looks similar to PICO8 but it isnt that...

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

it's an actually gameboy game :D
also the player hitbox is actually smaller the the sprite as the nose has no collision just the base of the rocket. But even that seem like it might be to big :p

And thanks, I put a lot of work into the pixel art. The gameboy have quite a few graphical limitation you have to work around

Submitted

Oh the sides were a bit too big, or at least the bosses lasers were... Also i think i rated your game 1 min before the deadline without even knowing so clutch! :P
What did you use to make it thoe? :3

Oh I see, GB studio. It's a gameboy dev tool

Having the ceiling as a kill plane felt a bit harsh. However, great concept. The art is beautiful. And "This game runs on original hardware" is certainly a flex.

Thanks! I'm a bit of a Retro enthusiast

The art is fantastic and the retro style music really fits the game. Can't get to the second level from the bug aside, everything seems too be really fun to play. Nicely done!

Developer

OOOO! I hate that bug, A lot of effort went into that boss fight and it sucks that people are missing it. Someone did find a bug to skip to the second level though if your interested.

start the game normally and then hold the fly button down until you get the black screen and keep holding it down. the level will start again but the screen wont scroll but you'll still be able to fly to the end. you'll know it working if you can still see the exhaust passing over the screen after a minute of holding down the Fly button you be at level 2 (there will be a screen transition)

Thanks for the guide and I have experienced the boss fight! The rocket's smoke as a weapon is actually a really good use of the mechanic for hitting enemies. If this game were to advance on, maybe make a feature where the enemies might spawn out on that final level?

Developer(+1)

actually there were 6 more levels and 2 more bosses planned out but with only had the 48 hours the game ended up more as a demo than the full idea

Pretty good short game. I also love pixel art so the game looks nice. Good job!

This was really fun! I loooooved the gameboy style pixel art and the music rocked too! -Awesome work! :D

Very nice visuals, I like the game. it is very hard, but it is still fun. Great Job!

Submitted

Nice. the smoke of the rocket destroy the falling object that was good addition.

Submitted

Love the retro theme and the general idea of the game. The game felt slow sometimes because of the falling of the rocket but in this case it really fits :D

Submitted

The game is OK but it is pretty buggy.

Developer

What kind of bugs where you experiencing?

Submitted

The retro theme is great, it really does feel like a game straight from a Gameboy, excellent work on the sprites! Unfortunately I played a few times and couldn't get past the glitch to the boss, I think the pace and difficulty of the first level is good though. I do wish that I could keep playing but the bug is preventing me from doing so sadly. Despite this, I still liked the content that I did play through, nice work!

Thanks for the comment, I'll be posting the fixed version after the jam so everyone who was stuck can play the 2nd level and the boss fight. BUT if you don't feel like waiting someone posted this:

"If you die on level one and hold down the X button on the black screen it respawns you in but the screen doesn't scroll. No obstacles spawn in and if you hold X down long enough it moves you to level 2"

I haven't tested it yet but that could get you to the second level and beyond

PS, it is in fact a working Gameboy game

Submitted

The art is great! I wasn't able to figure out how to fix the glitch, but I did enjoy my time playing regardless, it was tricky (but fair!) Good work!

Submitted

Pretty good game but didn't understand the thing about the glitch. The presentation is top notch. As things to improve, maybe lose the velocity to the sides when "jumping" straight up because if not the "jump" to the side is only used once every time you want to change directions.

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks! As for the issue with the bug it's that the game checks your position relative to the viewable screen, if you go too far off top or bottom of the screen you get a game over and have to restart the level. At the end of the first level the offset of that check is off so unless your near the top of the screen as the level ends the game thinks your off screen and resets the level. This has since been fixed but no new version can be uploaded until after the Jam ends

Submitted

Really cool retro feel! Nice and solid little concept, well executed. I got a bit confused when I would die though, a game over/restart screen would help :) still, awesome work!

Submitted

Cool game! I especially liked the presentation. The graphics and the music did a really good job tying everything together. Good intro screens, nicely packaged. I liked how arcade-y it felt.

Also extra plus for being quick into action and good pacing.

Developer

Thank you

Amazing art and sounds! also very fun and challenging gameplay! nice job!

I adore the fact you made a working gameboy game! Unfortunately I found a couple more bugs. If you die on level one and hold down the X button on the black screen it respawns you in but the screen doesn't scroll. No obstacles spawn in and if you hold X down long enough it moves you to level 2.  I also died to one of the meteors right before the end of level 2 and it froze my game, so I had to start all over again. Bugs aside, this is a very fun game with a lot of charm. I love the little story in the description, and the controls added to make it work on mobile. Great entry!

Very fun and challenging! And the art style is amazing
