Love that you used many of the scale interpretations of the theme! The game was pretty laggy for me, but visually it was great!

I didn't really get how the music puzzle worked, I just solved it by luck I think, but the maze puzzle was real nice! Still, took me a bit to know that I had to talk to the witch a secong time for her to give me an ability. I wish things we could interact with had been highlighted, but aside from that I think it was a neat game!

Developer

Thank you for playing and for enduring the lag! And thanks for the feedback! We're working on an updated build with better optimization, more guidance/hints for the puzzles, as well as a better flow to access the ability menu.

The game looks great! The whimsical atmosphere reminds me of Alice in Wonderland. The implementation of the theme is really cool, it's nice that you included every interpretation of the word "scale". The title is also very clever, a nice play on words. It's a bit all over the place, but in the best way possible! :D Really cool game!

Thanks so much for playing and very glad that you've enjoyed the game! We've also scattered small references throughout the game, hopefully you've spotted them!

Really lovely looking game! The first room in particular was really striking when I first opened the game. The colours and surrealism and animals created a very unique atmosphere. (There was so much going on that I had some pretty bad performance issues at first… I figured it out though!) I really enjoyed the Alice in Wonderland-esque setting and the cute characters. As a musician the music puzzle tickled me as well, although I imagine it could have been very difficult for some people.

I do think the game is a bit unfocused. It has so many mechanics - a piano, platforming, solving a maze, upgrades from the witch, etc. - but none of them really go anywhere, and they don’t work together. I think you could make a really neat puzzler about helping a witch in a magical forest, but I think you would need to decide on a vision for what you want the game to be.

Good work overall though! I’m always impressed by nice 3D graphics in a jam.

Thanks a lot for playing and for the comprehensive feedback! We're glad that you enjoyed it!

You're right that the game is a bit unfocused -- we went in with that intention of making a mini story by attacking the jam theme ('scales') in every sense of the interpretation (might be a little too meta :D), which also reflects the nonsensical nature of Alice in Wonderland.
Another issue that we've just discovered is that the ending cutscene did not trigger for some players (see first screenshot), depicting the player making some new friends and exiting the forest after the mini ordeal (perhaps a little closure that most players are looking for).

That makes a lot of sense! I don’t recall an ending cutscene, but that definitely would’ve tied everything together.

The nonsensical Wonderland thing could totally work! I like the idea of progressing through a series of unique puzzles. After all, the original Alice in Wonderland doesn’t have much of an overarching story at all, and it’s a classic. All it would really need is some sort of through-line to tie a bow on the experience :)

I really like the artwork, the textures, and the character designs. The puzzles are little challenging because there is not enough user experience (Visual/Audio) that helps understand what I can interact with and what not and it was really to forget that I can jump since I only need to use it once. I found it hard to understand what genre or type of game it was trying to because it had a little bit of everything: exploration, puzzles, platform, but each one was mainly use once and not really consistently together.  I would recommend to try to find a way to unite all of these gameplay mechanics.

Thanks for playing and for the feedback! We will include a little more hints to the abilities and guidance for the player after the voting period. As for the genre of the game, we did intend to do a little bit of everything and wanted to make it a mini 2-level standalone story.

An issue that we've just discovered while you were playing is that the ending cutscene did not trigger for some players (see first screenshot), depicting the player making some new friends and exiting the forest after the mini ordeal (perhaps a little closure that most players are looking for).

Very beautiful! Incredibly polished for a weekend game jam. All the levels felt really well put together and full of life.

I did feel like the puzzles were a bit too challenging. I could have used a hint or two at times and I think it would have made the game a lot more enjoyable. Otherwise really enjoyed the silly story!

Nice entry! and thanks for reviewing Cell Life :)

Developer

Thanks for popping by and giving a go at our game! And thanks for the feedback!

Sorry for the lack of instructions for the puzzles, we will include a little more hints and guidance for the player after the voting period. Though we wanted the player to explore the world a little by themselves and try to piece out the puzzles!

Having to unlock each of the abilities to get past each challenge was neat! I had a good laugh at how silly it made the protagonist look each time. Love that you just used every possible take on the jam theme you could think of, too. Nice work!

Very glad that you enjoyed it! We wanted to do something silly and light-hearted, and thought why stop at one scale when we can put in as many SCALEs as possible! :D

Thank you! It was not too gameplay heavy, we went with a slightly more explorative type of game

The second level was actually interesting in this game, at first I thought the game had some bugs because I couldn't access some areas on that level, turns out you need to unlock some skills to access them :v

Developer

Thanks for playing! We wanted the player to explore a little and try piece out the puzzle!
