Nice game. Collecting resources and crafting system was fun. The main goal was missing, but given the crafting and mention of the score the natural push is towards crafting an automaton. (Which I managed after a few tries, getting a score of 216.) Coal is a very constrained resource, as it's also used for moving. There was very little margin for error in optimizing movement and saving coal so that you can build an automaton. You can consider having smaller objects to craft that give the player some advantage immediately (higher speed, lower coal consumption, etc.). Right now the game loop is collect all resources, get to the nearest forge, and then craft. You could also show all resources and items in the top bar. basically flatten out the inventory grid into one row and put it there. Right now it's only distance covered and coal, and I'm not sure why the total distance matters. Overall this is great for a jam, and the core game system is good. With some tweaks this will be more fun to play. All the best!

This felt fun but incomplete, though maybe I missed something.  I figured out a route to get me to all the ores without running out of coal while making the components needed to forge an automaton, but once I'd done that I couldn't figure out what to do next.  Still, it plays fine and functions that far at least, so great effort in just one week!  Thanks for the game to play!

Developer

Thanks for playing! I agree it is very incomplete and needs some kind of goal . I appreciate the feedback!

Smooth drill control, didn’t feel too jittery. The gameloop was pretty simple, so the game didn’t last long, built the bare minimum and game ended quickly. Could have used some audio to spruce it up a bit more. Nice work.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback Braydee, I appreciate you giving it a play!

Loved how responsive the controls were. Also liked the drill animation. Would've liked to receive a reward for crafting the automaton but overall good job

Thank you for playing! I agree, a better points/award system would be beneficial to the game.

Ha - from the comments below it seems I wasn't the only one to not read properly and craft myself to death at the beginning! Was nice to control the digger and I liked the concept once I got going. I missed sound/music - would have added a lot to the atmosphere. Might have done with having UI scaling adjusted to help see the text better also

Love that this is your first jam entry! It's so good for a first timer!

Developer

Thanks for playing! These are very valid critiques, I appreciate it!

I enjoyed playing your game. I love how you combined the old "Motherload" gameplay with a more specific crafting system where certain ores were needed to make certain items. I fell this could be expanded upon nicely to make a much more complex game if desired. I probably would have appreciated an in-game tutorial. It did take me a second to figure out that I was losing coal to my movement, and thus I could not beat the game. Well done! I love the idea you implemented!

Thanks for playing and the kind words :) I completely agree, it 100% needs a tutorial!

Short, simple and fun, and the points system invites me to want to get highscore

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing, I'm glad you had fun!

Solid submission - The driller moved very very smooth. Took me a while to figure out where I was supposed to go. Nice take on crafting!

Developer

Thanks for playing! you are not the only person who was lost at first. I definitely needed to make a tutorial

Controls and driller animation were nice and smooth! My bad for not reading carefully about Coal being fuel. Crafted myself to death the first few times. But I finally got the hang of it. There's room to develop this further! Like a end goal, and perhaps not making the Menu UI block the coal count. Would be even better with Music and SFX!

Developer

I totally agree with your critiques and plan to implement them as I am going to develop this further after the jam! Thanks for playing!

Idea feels nice. Nice addition for the points system would be about how many points each part gives to you. In the beginning i felt there is no goal but i made my own goal to do the automaton.

Developer

Thanks for playing! Adding the points to the crafting screen is a good idea, but if I had made the goal to build the automaton like you set for yourself that would have been even better!

The game idea is very good, and exploration is quite enjoyable. I felt a bit lacking in purpose or something to drive me towards a specific goal. But the game is really nice, congratulations.

Developer

Thank you! Yeah I think if I had made the goal to build the automaton like another player suggested it would have gave the players more purpose

I like the art and the particle system for the smoke and dirt is very good. My only suggestion is perhaps a visual indicator to point out the nearest forge to make it easier to navigate. Personal best score is 114, don't know if that's a good score or a low score though.

Developer

Thanks for playing! I particularly like how the smoke particle system turned out. I had another one  for when you collect the ore but it for some reason doesn't show up when I export for the web. I plan to keep working on this game after the jam so I'll definitely keep the forge navigation idea in mind.

Not quite sure what I'm supposed to do after acquiring automation and all the ore blocks. Interesting idea though.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! Yeah it is a bit incomplete. The idea would be to have multiple levels where you must get a certain score to move on. Also would want to have it so more crafting recipes could be unlocked
