Like a lot of the other comments suggest, what we have here is a solid foundation, just could use a bit more story.  What is there is well-written and well-presented though, good work!

This is a really interesting idea. It stopped at expeditions and was it the end?
It is a good attempt in my opinion and the writing was nice. It was fun for me as I play a lot cRPGs.

I think the game should have gone with more options to fully capitalise on this genre of games.

I wasn't expecting a game like this, but it was a wonderful surprise. If there were 10 chapters I would play them all. Congrats on your entry!

Oh nice take on the theme. This game gave me some “Lapse” vibes which is an game app I have played a lot.

I found the story interesting. The presentation supported for me very well to follow the game and in combination with the decision making actually made me reading all of it.

Developer

Thank you! I've never heard of Lapse, but I'll definitely check it out.

Text games aren’t my type of games so I can’t say I enjoyed it. That said, your game is well made, explicit, and is a good jam game, congratulations !

Thanks for playing!

Great idea and implementation! Tbh I don't enjoy text games that much, I think it can be a great part of many games, like RPGs, where choices alter the texts as well! It reminds me of Wildermyth a bit, which I deeply adore :)

And good job on taking "reflection" as a "journal"! That's quite an original take on the theme! :)

Developer

Thank you! I also love Wildermyth, though I have to admit I didn't think about it at all as I designed this game. I can see the similar threads now that you pointed it out!

Great narrative. I liked how the changes to the narrative were fairly impactful. Simple and slick; my only note is that I wish there was a little more, but that's a great problem to have!

Also I took a gander at your code and it's not thaaaat spaghettified. It's quite clean for jam code imo, so hats off there too :)

Thank you for your kind words!

A concept about reflections that actually crossed my mind when the theme came out, but I found it hard to develop. I’m glad someone explored it, focusing on an important aspect: the narrative, which is never easy in video games. Thank you for sharing this with us!

Thanks for playing!

Nicely done for building the system from scratch! I agree with the other comments that this could have been extended further, but I know how it’s like to do something from scratch in a limited amount of time.

I think the writing was good and would go well in a standalone game with an extended story and scene art!

Developer

Thanks for playing and for your kind words!

I like the message about the power of being positive! This was a creative idea that makes good use of the theme, however it does feel like it stops just as it is getting going. Overall great work, congrats on the submission!

Developer

Thank you! Unfortunatey, I ran out of time, otherwise I would have done more writing.

A unique take on the theme. The game seems unfinished to me, unless it was a bug, but I couldn't get past "The Expedition" phase, and that phase didn't feel like an ending. But otherwise a solid foundation for a Witcher-esque universe.

As someone who has made not one but two games with a lot of reading in them, one thing I have learned is that long-winded exposition is a killer for enjoyment. Glad you made the prologue skippable, and I think the game still makes sense for those who did skip it, but that kind of exposition is better left sort of sprinkled throughout more interesting and engaging bits of story.

Oh yes and the music fits quite well and the sounds were great!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! Yes, unfortunately I couldn't write a satisfying conclusion due to the time constraint, so "The Expedition" was the end. Between building out the journal system and writing a good story, I had to go with the former. I would have loved to have spent more time revising.
