I would give this a six on originality if I could, maybe higher. This is a super unique and exciting idea and wildly impressive for a game jam entry. It's short, but sweet. Thank you for submitting this one :)
Great concept! I had a nice chill time until it started to get closer to sunrise and I realized I had no clue where the cave was. Being a bat is hard, but I had a good time, and I appreciated the framing at the start of the game too.
Really cool idea! I enjoyed the mechanic and map. I haven't tried 3d making yet, but if I could make a prototype like this, I would feel incredibly accomplished.
Ignoring the fact that bats aren't actually blind this was very fun and cute. We actually considered using a bat for our game but ended up changing it. I do think the head bob can be turned down a bit as it did get a little uncomfortable in the cave area. I did enjoy the echolocation and while you can spam it I found it wasn't needed to do so but could probably use a cooldown.
Little tip for adding debug stuff, in Godot you can check for debug builds in gdscript using "if OS.is_debug_build():" then just putting whatever code you want underneath, helps if you want things to be used by devs but not accessible by the end user.
Really enjoyed this game I liked it a lot. Great job!
It's pretty neat even if it's short. Something to be said about bypassing philosophical musings about non-human experiences by... actually simulating the experience. The head bobbing might have gotten unpleasant if the time spent in the cave (where the walls are close enough to notice) was longer, but as it is wasn't really a problem for me. Music's nice and chill, the sound of the sonar is subtle enough not to get annoying...
A few minor bugs (heh) I've noted:
Nothing that really affected the game though. Had a good time!
I really love the concept of this game! I had a blast for about 5 seconds before my computer crashed and I had to hard reboot by holding the power button.
I’m on an ubuntu machine and nothing was responding (alt-tab, alt-f4, etc.) and this hasn’t happened before.
I’ll try it out again sometime if I get on a Windows machine.
Again, really awesome idea and I hope it works for everyone else!
Oof, really sorry to hear that! We had a developer on our team running the game on Linux and they didn't run into anything like this, but something must have slipped by. Hopefully the Windows version runs well for you. Thanks for the review!
Cool concept, your echolocation looks and works great! I did headbutt some spiders too many times initially out of confusion but soon started to enjoy munching down on some bugs. The bobbing was a bit too much for me personally however I noticed you had settings to adjust it which was appreciated!
Just a note regarding the windows build, it launched in a weird aspect for me so part of the game was beyond my screen until changing resolution and I also accidently entered what I realized was debug mode by pressing 'F'. Might not want that to be as easily accidently accessible!
Great work!
Hey - this was fantastic. Really cool idea and implemented really well. I'm not cut out to be a bat, as I was chirping way more than I've heard any bat chirp. 5/5 from me though, great work, thanks for the submission - congrats!
Thank you! Yeah, you can chirp away to your heart's content ... maybe a little too much. My team talked about adding a chirp cooldown but we just ran out of time. Thanks for the review!
